Seen a few ways of creating a log off button folder and putting it on the desktop for a quick and easy way of logging off or shutting down. Can someone fill me in on a proper way to do this and what command i should use to create both a log off and shutdown icon on my desktop.

View 14 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start up windows cmd.exe opens up and the command to shut down is made and it shuts down. I have temporarily solved this problem by renaming cmd.exe just to another name of cmg.exe so that it cannot be opened but I do run batch programs so have to keep changing the name when required. Any suggestions would be helpful as to sort this out.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to create a zipped folder from the command line? "Compact" doesn't really do what I want (just uses drivespace or something to compress the folder). What I'm trying to do is make a simple batch file that creates a folder, throws a bunch of files with the same extenstion into it, and then zips it up- but without a command line version of the built-in windows zip program this will be impossible (through batch file anyway).
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently I've noticed that when I shut down and reboot my desktop computer, there is a program that is not responding to the shutdown command and I have no idea what this program is, where it came from, whether it is spyware, virus, trojan, etc. I am running Windows XP Home edition and the name of the program is this: 7801a2f0-bfbd-40f4-9a8c-06b91134573d I have tried to Google it without any success. If anyone knows what this program is or where it came from, whether or not it is needed on my computer, etc., I would be interested to hear about it.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows brings up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by using the windows button + r on the keyboard. This affects the "Search" and "Help & Support" commands too.

I am told to create 2 short cuts as follows: http://www.somewhere.com/home and a mapped shared drive: \some thing my folder and put these two shortcuts on the Human HResource Users' desktop when they login. I am thinking about creating a Human Resource Desktop group so that when someone who is assigned to this group would get the two shortcuts. Since I am new to Windows, I don't know how to do this. Please advice. Much appreciated.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI tried to create a shortcut of an email internet link onto my desktop and all I got was a small rectangular white box. Try as I might, I could not remove it. The box is adjustable and can be made to cover the entire desktop area behind the icons but over the current desktop theme. In my attempts to delete it I have ended up with a white box about an inch wide from the top to the bottom on the left side of the screen. I cannot reduce the size any further but as I said, I can drag the right margin all the way across the entire screen.

I tried to bring up task manager and alt - F4 but still nothing happens. It just stays at my desktop. Everything else is working but it seems i cant shutdown or restart.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I get to the welcome screen and put in my password, windows starts to load my settings, then once it reaches the desktop, it logs off. It acts as if there's a log off command pinned to start up. I did have a spyware/adware problem right before this started. I scanned and had the spyware program (Spyware Doctor) clean the disk. Things after were running fine and had even rebooted both hard and soft a couple of times without any problem. I turned off the computer before leaving home for a few hours, came back, turned on the computer and the behavior described above started. I called a tech in town and he suggested to try booting in under the last known configuration used and if that didn't work, to try booting in safe mode. If that didn't work, then he'll need to see the computer. Unfortunately, neither worked and they aren't open again until Monday. I'm using a friend's laptop to find tech support between now and Monday morning, hoping to save a trip.
The computer I have doesn't have a familiar brand name like Compaq or Dell and I cannot remember the name. However, it is a typical IMB compatible like Compaq with Windows XP Home Edition, has a Pentium 4 processor and 1.something gigs of memory.
I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 on my a computer that I built and started to install other programs as usual so that I could use this computer. The Windows Update balloon saying there are updates for your computer(it also claimed that I could work on other things while the updates occurred. So I installed other programs--Photoshop CS2, Quicktime Pro 7, Wacom Pen Tablet software drivers. The Windows Update happened three times. 1st had about 20 different updates, I rebooted with no problems. 2ns had 35 updates including IE 7, rebooted with no problems, 3rd time had 47 updates, rebooted and now my desktop is blank. My Pen Tablet (mouse) works but I don't see any icons or the START bar. My programs still work because when I open the Windows Task Manager and choose New task, I can browse for programs. Surfing thru other threads in this forum, I thought maybe I had a virus or malware.Just have never had any error messages. so I downloaded and ran these program scans: WPFind3u, VundoFix, AntiSuperspyware. Scans came up with no find of malicious stuff, but my desktop was visible afterwards. I've even tried starting up in safe mode. I get a black screen there--no icons on desktop.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi have a dell desktop windows xp sp2 and i had gotten a virus and cleaned it out after i got it out of the system i ended up with no internet connection i keep going to the command prop and typing in the command line to reset winsock and it dosent seem to work i also used a couple programs to try to fix the problem i know its winsock because in the command prob when trying to renew my ip address it says error connecting to rps server or something like that i also talked to road runner tech support and got it narrowed down to being a winsock problem i don't know what to do there is no subnet mask address or ip address and the computer doesnt seem to want to co-operate with me for anything ive tryed safe mode and just normal startup mode the only thing i can think to do is fdisc and reformat the HDD and i cant even do that because i lost my windows xp disc and there is no recovery partition on the hdd any ideas on what happened or how to fix this?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi remote into my XP box everything is fine except when i shut down using a shutdown shortcut and other shutdown utilities no matter what after i get booted off the remote session the computer looks like its shutting down then stays on for a few seconds then a BSOD appear. I have been trying to figure out why for the past week and no solution so im hoping someone can chime in..The problem is only on remote if i shut down locally never a single BSOD and no hardware has changed. No driver issues. ive read and tried all the usual solutions. Need someone here to chime in on specifics.Ive also tried to remote in with bare minimum and no go. same thing.

View 13 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. View 3 Replies View RelatedWinXP Pro sp3, IE 7 (Quick launch) Show desktop stopped toggling so I deleted the icon and recreated it. I've followed all the instructions: in administrator, used notepad, carefully followed shell instructions, hit enter after each line including last, saved as (all files) Show Desktop.scf to proper folder. Result = proper icon on taskbar that doesn't react to clicking. Also tried deleting icon and using Microsoft's (we'll do it for you) app and got same result.
