Apr 20, 2009My company just migrated from Novell to Active Directory. I am new to Windows. I am the local LAN Administrator. I am told to create 2 short cuts as follows: http://www.somewhere.com/home and a mapped shared drive: \some thing my folder and put these two shortcuts on the Human HResource Users' desktop when they login. I am thinking about creating a Human Resource Desktop group so that when someone who is assigned to this group would get the two shortcuts. Since I am new to Windows, I don't know how to do this. Please advice. Much appreciated.

Oct 14, 2006I tried to create a shortcut of an email internet link onto my desktop and all I got was a small rectangular white box. Try as I might, I could not remove it. The box is adjustable and can be made to cover the entire desktop area behind the icons but over the current desktop theme. In my attempts to delete it I have ended up with a white box about an inch wide from the top to the bottom on the left side of the screen. I cannot reduce the size any further but as I said, I can drag the right margin all the way across the entire screen.

Sep 5, 2007I had Windows XP Pro SP2 installed, and then i did the huuuge mistake to install Vista Ultimate. Got annoyed and reinstalled XP Pro SP3.I backed up my files before goin back to XP on an external HD. And when I copied back the files to the pc I saw, to my horror, that everything looked ok. But when I try to open text documents, it's just garbled text. Looks like this.Every single document looks like that, rtf files, txt files, word documents and so on. And I've tried to open them and converting to different codings in word and so on (UTF, ANSII and what not). Nothing works.And then I saw, when I was gonna import my bookmarks in Firefox that I saved before I went back to XP from Vista, that those html files also are full of garbled text
I looked around on google, and can't find anything about it I would greatly appreciate some help. Every single text document, which is quite a few, is messed up. And some of them, I didnt even open in Vista.. So don't know if it's because of Vista or if its something else.

It gives her the following error.applet(s) in this HTML page requires a version of java different from the one the browser is currently using in order to run the apple(s) in this HTML page, a new browser session is I had her click ok to start a new session and still a don't work. I check her java version and it is up to date. I then had her clear her temp file and cookies. Still won't work.

Sep 22, 2006Sometime over the past couple of weeks, I started having a number of files on my C:/ drive which would not open. I wrote another forum and got some advice, and did some studying, and for some I was able to take back permissions and found what looked like a phony user account hidden way down in Documents and Settings.
Today I found close to 2/3 of my files would not display, of the types, htm and html, jpg, png, and doc files. I went to check permissions and the security tab was not under Properties.
I have tried everything: I have re-installed Windows, I have run every virus and adware and spyware scan and repair known, and have constantly cleaned the registry and used HiJack this which did show two programs called Voodoo and Banshee which were not mine.

We need to install a retriction that will create an Administrator Password that can not be deleted by simply logging into safe mode. Also, we need to make it impossible for the students to create their own accounts with their own passwords. Right now the teachers are having a hard time, because several knuckleheads keep making a mess by changing the instructor's passwords and creating their own unique ones. I deleted the partition via the Windows Install/Setup menu, but when the PC boots, it lists Windows 2K as one of the startup/OS options. I need to be able to do an /fdisk on the whole drive and start from scratch. Unfortunately, I only have a basic Windows XP installation CD - and if there's a way to get to a prompt and do it from there, I can't remember. Could anyone direct me to a bootable CD that will allow me to /fdisk and delete and create partitions? I need something quick and fast. I'm not permitted to download or install anything without permission and my boss is out of town until Thursday. He may call in tomorrow (or he may not). So please, don't point me to Bart's PE or anything that requires installing an .ISO burner. I need to be able to do this with the tools that Windows XP, SP 2 native.These are laptops I'm working with and they do not have floppy drives, so I cannot use floppy disks.

Prior to doing anything else with that computer I would like to do a backup ( preferably complete ) on to a DVD(s) that will simplify an instillation if I ever end up having to reformat. If something happens down the road I would just like to install XP and then use my backup to restore it to what I have today. Nov 30, 2009it's not about changing pagefile size or moving it - all of a sudden I can't create it on my machine.
2 HD (plenty of space one each) Win XP SP3, Athlon xp2400 - 2 gig RAM.Did all the appropriate things like defrag and set all the permissions of the admin and users in Safe Mode.Doesn't matter which of the 2 drives I select, doesn't matter what size or even system managed - allocated memory is always 0. Every reboot the error 'you have no pagefile or it's too small' still comes up.I tried to use Recovery Console from my CD - but I get the message your version of Windows (SP3) is newer than the version on the CD - you will overwrite it if you re-install. So I cancel out.

To search for a file, click the Search button, and then click Search.[pop-up #2, once I click "OK" in pop-up #1]. Unable to create the file 'New Briefcase'File system error (16389). Also when I start up my computer, I get a message identical to pop-up #1, except the file is "1". Just the number 1. It seems to be harmless though. As far as I know, the .com extension is unusual. Could it be malware/spyware?
