it is not the hardware's issue, as this is a dual-boot windows ME and new installation of XP (w/SP2) home and this never happens when it is running ME, only XP (they are on different drives). What can this be due to, and how can I tweak my XP software to not crash (and create a need for system restore due to errors!) everytime I want to install software from a CD?
View 5 RepliesI first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). The only time it seems to crash is once in a while when I click on My Document, Control Panel, My Pictures etc.

I'm running Windows xp professional, and I recently upgraded the hardware in my computer. After this upgrade my computer would infrequently just restart, about once a week or so, but I left for a trip to vancouver for a week and when I got back and turned my computer on the problem started getting much worse. Now it happens about ten times a day, and I can't just leave it off because I don't have another computer and I need this one for classes. Also, when I try to play games it shuts down, or freezes about ten minutes after I start. I have run AVG, Spybot, and ad-aware, and the problem remains. This problem seems to be completely random, sometimes it happens while I'm doing something, and sometimes it happens when the computer is doing nothing.

View 9 Replies View RelatedExplorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back. Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc. I don't receive any error messages when this happens. This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a USB media card reader in my system, soon thereafter, I began experiencing some problems with programs acting strangely and crashing, etc. I unplugged the card reader since I rarely use it anyway. The problems seemed to stop for about a week or so. Then the computer would just randomly restart in the middle of a game or when left running idle for a long time, such as overnight or while I'm at work. I thought that maybe my 420w psu was reaching its limits with 3 HDDs and 2 optical drives plugged in. I unplugged a single HDD and now the crashes happen less often, but still happen. The crashes are more likely to happen when playing a game, but the programs include the game itself, or winamp, trillian, skype, firefox, or "truevector service". Those are usually about the only programs I have running at all. Twice so far I have encountered the blue screen of death, which I hadn't seen I think since SP1 was released. So far I have tried updating my BIOS (all 3 available versions), updating my video card drivers, even reformatting my system drive, all to no avail.

It says beginning dump of physical memory in a blue screen and counts up from 1 at the bottom of the screen. It takes forever so i Just restart the computer. However, the main problem is when I am running Adobe Encore DVD - that program runs for a long while. Everytime it crashes (I mean win XP crashes with a blue screen). I have checked the event logger that what it says: 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0x86764ec0, 0x86764f60, 0x0a140014) but most of the time I get the following: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0x804c6c2f, 0xf3e1cb30, 0x00000000).
I have searched web and found that I should try to do the following: to change DisablePagingExecutive value from 0 to 1. I have done it, and tried to run Encore. At the same point I got the following reason for OS failure: 0x1000000a (0x000005c4, 0x000000ff, 0x00000001, 0x804db8ca). I really don't know what to do. I have to finish the DVD REALLY SOON and I can't create the image. Please please please help me (to reinstall windows is not an option - I can't ensure that the DVD project will not be deleted and I can't backup 55GB).
When I try and install programs (and I've tried a few different ones to make sure it's not just the installers) my computer will either reboot or give me errors saying that the .exe for that particular program cannot be accessed.I think the whole problem is related to permissions, I've tried giving administrators full control over program files, but this doesn't seem to have helped.

When Windows starts, it recognizes that the USB ports have been turned on, and then it identifies the make and model of the USB port, but then the system locks. When I go into BIOS and turn off USB, the system runs just fine. What is causing the machine to lock when I turn the USB ports on?

The install will get to the installing devices graphical user interface and quit at the 34 minute mark.Then upon reboot it will check the disk and other parameters and they check out ok, so... hence xp will resume the setup automatically and the process just repeats itself over and over and stall out at the 34 minute mark. Is there a reason for this?

View 14 Replies View Relatedi have i think it is a spyware problem, there is a file in the windows folder that needs deleating, the only problem is windows vistas explorer restarts every 10 seconds or so and i cant browse the hdd because it jus restarts itself lik u have just logged in, i have even tried this in safe mode but it stil does it. Anybody know of any problems like a certain spyware name or virus that is doin this, and any programs that would likely to get rid of it, this has happened before, and i deleted the program in the windows folder and it was fine, except i dont know the name of this file i havbe to delete this time.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI started getting browser and sometimes PC crashes. At first it seemed to be browser related. But the PC would also crash when idle. I tried disabling add- ons in Firefox and opening in safe mode. Tried using Chrome but it would crash with the message that Flash had malfunctioned. Then I started getting Stop messages and BSODs.I hadn't installed and new hardware and, I don't think, installed any new big programs except for updates to existing ones.
I emailed a few of the mini dump files to a friend. He said they didn't specify which drivers were causing the problem. But it might be something to do with the video or the network card. I rolled back drivers. No change. I updated drivers and uninstalled lots of programs. For a month everything seemed stable. Then the BSODs started to return. Infrequently at first but then more regularily. Sorry the story is a bit confused but it is difficult to remember every detail of what happened and the order I did things in.
I install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003

Now I can't boot up (cold or warm) without using the original disk. Can I just go into setup and change boot settings without re-installing.Is there anything else I should know before I attempt to fix this problem? Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?
I re-formated my sisters computer yesterday, and after installing it i had no internet. As i hadn't installed any drivers yet, i understood that. But after heading over to dell's site, downloading all of the drivers for her computer and then installing them, i STILL do not have any internet. I don't see any connections on the computer either, it's just blank!

So after pushing power, the computer passes POST, then goes to a screen saying Windows can not start normally and gives an option of going into Safe mode, trying to start normally, etc.If I select start normally, it goes to the black Windows Startup screen, showing a progress bar, then the screen goes black as if it's going to go to the blue welcome screen then just restarts, with the same loop over and over.In safe mode, it says what drivers it's loading, then quickly does a blue screen (too quick to read), then restarts.Do you guys think this is a software problem? Is there any way to fix it without reinstalling Windows?

I woke up to find my computer had an error on it. It had been on all night and connected to the internet (if that helps you understand the situation). The error was something like this:
Explorer.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x0105b1fe" referenced memory at "0x000000000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.
and 'Explorer.exe' was something else a couple times (if I saw it I would remember)
I kept clicking 'OK' and It would keep appearing, then the start menu and taskbar would disappear and appear. The warning kept appearing. I restarted properly and then the computer would keep restarting after "Windows is starting up...".
I tried going into Safe Mode and Safe Mode in Command Prompt and still restarts when I get to logging in.
I thought if I got to MS-DOS, I could launch System Restore and go back to a previous state, but it's easier said then done.
I have tried to boot from a Win98 CD, but I couldn't locate the C:WINDOWS directory.
I've tried to boot from a Office 2000 Pro CD that had Word, Excel, and Outlook. I could brouse around the CD in Command Prompt, but that didn't help much.
Now, I'm onto booting from an WinXP upgrade CD. I've tried reinstall Windows, and when Windows Installation is just about done, the computer restarts and I had to restart all again. When I start up now, it is WinXP without Service Pack 2.
In Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console, I have tried to open System Restore ("C:WINDOWSSystem32Restore
strui.exe"), but I just get 'The command is not recognized. Type HELP for a list of supported commands.'
Does anyone know how to open System Restore in Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console? Or even if is possible. Am I even on the right path?

I also have my all my files on a partitioncalled D: and I am willing to try to reinstall Win2K again and upgrade to XP. One more question is if I format or reinstall on the C: drive, will it effect the D: partition?
I'm working on a computer for a client and have found it to be the most problem filled machine I have ever delt with. Spybot and ad-aware removed between the two of them over 1000 spyware files, I had to un install several bad programs, and stinger found 7 critical viruses. . It also will not connect to the Internet, it has been configured to the shop's network and I can ping other computers in the network no problem, I can even ping the gateway, but it cant connect to or ping any site beyond that...and finally, explorer restarts anytime you right click on a file on the desktop
