I am trying to install the USB ports on a 2Ghz Celereon system running Windows XP SP2. When Windows starts, it recognizes that the USB ports have been turned on, and then it identifies the make and model of the USB port, but then the system locks. When I go into BIOS and turn off USB, the system runs just fine. What is causing the machine to lock when I turn the USB ports on?

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy system just shuts down while trying to install xp home (sp1 ver). And I am forced to shut down during the install. The install will get to the installing devices graphical user interface and quit at the 34 minute mark.Then upon reboot it will check the disk and other parameters and they check out ok, so... hence xp will resume the setup automatically and the process just repeats itself over and over and stall out at the 34 minute mark. Is there a reason for this?

Since my PC is 64, I plan to install only the 64. But is there also some reason to install the 32? Also what about the RAID drivers? I am totally new to 64/RAID. The extent of my knowledge is the ability to say them!

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a nvidia driver (84.21) to replace the version (77.77) I've successfully been running for several months now. Both are certified as compat with my 6800gt card. I seem to be able to instal it OK, files are copied across, the screen resets, the new driver is listed as installed uder the device manager and I get a message saying the new hardware has succesfully installed and I need to restart to finish installation.
When I do, i go through the usual boot through to the windows start up screen (with flag), then I get a blue secreen with "please wait....." after 5 secs the dots stop appearing, then within 30 secs the HD stops. The keyboard etc is frozen. I gave it 5 mins then reverted to last good config, and tried again deleting all previous nvidia drivers, but still get the same result. I also tried a different driver (83. something) and still the same. I had norton disabled during installation
here is the problem: when I plug in an USB device, windows will install the driver for the device automaticlly if:
1. the driver comes with the system.
2. the device driver has been installed.
I wanna stop windows installing driver automatically but ask me the location of the driver when I plug in a device every time. How do I do that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI started getting browser and sometimes PC crashes. At first it seemed to be browser related. But the PC would also crash when idle. I tried disabling add- ons in Firefox and opening in safe mode. Tried using Chrome but it would crash with the message that Flash had malfunctioned. Then I started getting Stop messages and BSODs.I hadn't installed and new hardware and, I don't think, installed any new big programs except for updates to existing ones.
I emailed a few of the mini dump files to a friend. He said they didn't specify which drivers were causing the problem. But it might be something to do with the video or the network card. I rolled back drivers. No change. I updated drivers and uninstalled lots of programs. For a month everything seemed stable. Then the BSODs started to return. Infrequently at first but then more regularily. Sorry the story is a bit confused but it is difficult to remember every detail of what happened and the order I did things in.
I have a Gateway 7422GX which as a Mobility Radeon 9550. I repaired windows using the cd because I restarted my computer and it was either going to take 7min+ to boot, or just wasn't going to. I got stuck at the windows splash screen. I'm using windows professional. Whenever I try to install any of the drivers, I get the same error message: Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will now exit.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003

Now I can't boot up (cold or warm) without using the original disk. Can I just go into setup and change boot settings without re-installing.Is there anything else I should know before I attempt to fix this problem? Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?
I re-formated my sisters computer yesterday, and after installing it i had no internet. As i hadn't installed any drivers yet, i understood that. But after heading over to dell's site, downloading all of the drivers for her computer and then installing them, i STILL do not have any internet. I don't see any connections on the computer either, it's just blank!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently put together a new PC - AMD X2 4800 / Nvidia 8800 GTS.For the most part it seems fine (just played through the first hour of HL2 / Episode 1 with full details etc and no issues at all), however, when i'm just idling around the windows desktop, browsing, shifting files around etc, I frequently get a complete lock up.During these lock ups the keyboard becomes unresponsive, the display stops updating etc, but the mouse cursor still moves in a laggy sort of way, for a few minutes until a BSOD flashes for an instant and the PC reboots. Eventviewer has a few offers on the subject. problems with the i8402prt driver failing to load, which would appear to be keyboard / mouse related somehow.

I monitor calls on a site--I call up popups that contain the calls--I go along fine and then out of no where the windows freeze up and I cant get out. Then i get the "IE needs to close"I have been working on this site for 3 years now and never had a problem. I do this at my day job too and I haven't had any problems. I've had some problems with IE crashing. I have Windows xp with sp2 installed. I went through the error report and most contain a problem with mshtml.dll. I got the windows web site and it said that there is some problem with sp2 in this case and they have a hot fix. But it looks like I would have to pay $99 bucks to contact microsoft and get it.
