My computer seems to be slowing down and hanging up every so often. When I start XP I go into task manager and see bunches of programs runnings. A lot of *.exe files. How do I get rid of them?? How do I know which ones to get rid of? They may be virous, extra junk form previous installs? I do run Nortons anti-virous program. I don't want to reformat and reinstall XP but I may need to.

View 6 Replies View Relatednew computer last month and we have not experienced any problems with it until yesterday. I had to use the ctrl+alt+del function for some reason, but when I entered those keys, a message came up that said "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator." Ctrl+alt+del has worked previously, as recent as the day before. But for some reason it will not open up. No one in my family messed with the computer controls, at least not purposely. I called the Tech Support for HP, the maker of our computer, and they could not figure out the problem. Their only suggestion was to do a full system restore. View 14 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a bunch of spyware by mistake this morning from a link my friend gave to me, he was unaware as well. I was able to get rid of the majority of it, but there are a few things in my registry i am unable to delete, i used spy bot to get rid of most of the spy ware but for some reason it is not detecting the rest, also ad aware detects it but is unable to remove it since it is running in the background, i am unable to find the processs from task manager and end it so i cant delete it from the registry manually. What it is doing is bascially spamming pop ups on my pc every so often, here are the suspected names of the infections : mpise.dll , h22o0cf3ef2.dll , h62o0gf3e62.dll.

It seems to run just fine, yet the mouse is at an hourglass for a good amount of time.Then, All the icons disappear, Start Menu goes away, Cannot open task manger or run anything. Computer then stalls with DLL.exe and svchost error messages.I ran a spybot scan and adaware. Only coming up with Jupilites and Smitfraud-C.Both have been cleaned.If I can find a way to transfer my HJT file from my laptop to the computer I am currently using, will posted as soon as possible.

I've been to windows task manager & have enabled I/O Read Bytes & I/O Write bytes. When I'm doing nothing the following 3 programs are constantly changing. I've been online for about 3 hours now & these are the approximate figures:
ashserve.exe (Avast antivirus): read: 4,700,000,000 write: 3,700,000
svhost.exe: read: 705,000,000 write: 718,000,000
lsass.exe: read: 1,010,000 write: 540,000
Today is the 1st time my firewall reporeted that lsass requested internet access though this disc activity has been noticable since doing the reinstall.
I have a HP Compaq Laptop 8510p.Since about 3 weeks, is an "exe" shown, which changes its name, after every start of the pc. This time its named XU8FE.exe, last time QBN4C.exe...and so on. A system scan for that files gets no results. Even in the registry is not such a file..The file is shown as a system process in the task manager.
Can anybody tell me, what kind of "exe" that is, and how to remove the causer of that file. I killed that process already (with admin rights possible) ..and there was no disturb during working with the pc.

View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen I'm burning DVD-s with nero the computer is very slow!I mean like the mouse even is lagging (i'm not sure if that is the right word ), when I click on an icon the indication (when it gets blue or something) is coming after a second or more.If winamp is playing a song, it starts drawling (the same happens when i click on thumbnail veiw of a movie on a dvd!)!
When i try to start a program, or open a folder the buffer (that nero shows) is at 100% and the folder opens after a 15-20s!When i open more than one program, the buffer drops to 50% and the computer is even slower!When the burning ends everything is ok..the computer is behaving normal!What could be the problem!I don't think it's from the hardware (1 GB Ram, Athlon 64 (3200+), 128MB Video)!Now i'm scanning with mcafee 2008 and after that i'll run ad-aware and spybot!
I added a 512mb stick and 500gb hard drive to an AMD 1.7mhz system that was running fine but just out of disk space (figured as long as the chassis was open to throw in the ram too). Now I can barely use the darn thing. Runs extremely slow. Audio and video and useless, responses are crazy - even the mouse is herky-jerky. Went into taskmanager and there is one program that seems to be using a lot of processor time but I alway have that one running even in the 'old' configuration. I can kill it and it helps a little bit but why should more resources make things worse. I have AVG running for virus checking and regularly run adaware and spybot for malware checking. Checked system settings and everything looks fine there as well - cache, VM, performance, etc. all set to normal levels (768mb by the way).

I can't place exactly when this started, but I'd say maybe 2-3 months ago. The computer just seems to be hanging all the time: windows sometimes take a long time to open, programs hang, frequent "sorry, gotta close this program" messages, etc, etc.
I don't know the exact time sequence, but it does seem that installing IE8 didn't help the situation; I get constant hangs and windows taking forever to open, having to shut down, etc.
I have XP pro.
Please help. I have upgraded a machine from 98 to XP pro. Now on start up, the pc hangs/freezes on the windows XP screen, the one with the blue scrollong bar at the bottom.

BTW, XP Pro SP2 and I use the CTRL+ALT+DEL to get into my computer instead of the other thing. Everything works fine in safe mode.

The startup process just stops, the screen stays black, the hard disk drive goes quiet and the activity light stays on (rather than the normal flickering).All I can do when this happens is hold down the power button until the power goes off.Also, when it does startup properly, after logging into XP it takes an unusually long time to load the settings,startup programs, etc and sometimes some of the normal system tray icons dont appear at all

After trying this for about 20 times I decided to try something else.The PC had win98 on it so it was working .i loaded the pc with winxp pro but an older edition.It does not include any service packs .and seems to be running fine.Then I loaded servicepack one and still no problems with XP After loading the second service pack the pc hanged again at the startup.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've run a number of anti-virus programs including Kaspersky, Avira and Avast. I've used Spyware Terminator, Super Anti-Spyware and Ad-Ware. Numerous runs of these programs has not solved the problem. I have not added any new hardware or other programs (besides the spyware and anti-virus). I've tried disabling the resident antivirus program, Avast but that doesn't seem to improve the situation. I am Any ideas about how to proceed from here?

View 9 Replies View Relatedthe computer will "hang". It stops keeping time and will not shut down via the on-screen start button. If you try to shut the puter off with the on/off button on the tower, it is very difficult to get it to turn back on that way...the computer comes on, but never boots up...monitor and keyboard/mouse never come on. I've found that unplugging the power cord from the back of the tower while the computer has power, and then plugging the power cord back in usually works to bring the puter back on and up without using the on/off button. Once the puter is back on, it keeps time again (but it has to be reset to current time). Once in a while, some settings are lost such as IE options. But in the past, settings were so messed up from this problem that it couldn't copy to CD and other such annoying things.
I tired doing a windows update yesterday, computer would not let me perfom the action.
The error message read: Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and install updates. This error may occur if the Remove access to use all Windows Update features group policy has been enabled by your system administrator and comes up with a windows error 0x8DDD0003 and have done a lot of the recommended fixes but nothing has worked.
lately my computer has been having these symtoms:- Hanging while left on and not used- Crashing Randomly, maybe 5 Minites into startup- Failing to start with a black screen where i should reach the login screen but i dont- Failing to start with the message "A Disk Read Error Has OccuredThe only way i have found around these problems, was taking the case off and disconnecting wires to the hard drive or the mother board and then putting them back in, even then i may have to restart it once or twice.

View 7 Replies View Relateda Dell Latitude laptop with XP pro, SP3 and all updates. Recently I found the cpu running at 3-4 % with only the desktop, Avira, and Windows Defender running. Normally cpu is down to 1% with these programs running. I turned off automatic updates and avira and defender but cpu was still at 3-4 %. How can I find out the cause of this? I do not know which of several svchost processes is causing the problem, this one uses about 35Mb with firefox open, 31Mb when I close it.

The next day a after work it was running slow so I cleared the temp files cache files, history files, scanned for spyware but the more I did the slower it got. I defrag it and it got slower. It's gotten to a point now that it will take forever to open anything and even when it does finally open it's soooo slow. It seems like it's running out of memory. Even when I click start to reboot it will take forever to open and when I click on shut down it will take forever to open too.
