I can't place exactly when this started, but I'd say maybe 2-3 months ago. The computer just seems to be hanging all the time: windows sometimes take a long time to open, programs hang, frequent "sorry, gotta close this program" messages, etc, etc.
I don't know the exact time sequence, but it does seem that installing IE8 didn't help the situation; I get constant hangs and windows taking forever to open, having to shut down, etc.
I have XP pro.
Please help. I have upgraded a machine from 98 to XP pro. Now on start up, the pc hangs/freezes on the windows XP screen, the one with the blue scrollong bar at the bottom.
When I start my computer, instead of the "Welcome to Windows" dialog box coming up, my computer just hangs at the blue screen. It never did this before. What's the problem? BTW, XP Pro SP2 and I use the CTRL+ALT+DEL to get into my computer instead of the other thing. Everything works fine in safe mode.
My PC has recently started hanging during startup. It usually happens before the Windows XP logo appears. The startup process just stops, the screen stays black, the hard disk drive goes quiet and the activity light stays on (rather than the normal flickering). All I can do when this happens is hold down the power button until the power goes off. Also, when it does startup properly, after logging into XP it takes an unusually long time to load the settings, startup programs, etc and sometimes some of the normal system tray icons dont appear at all
I have been trying for quite a while to load a new xp pro with service pack 2 .As soon as the files are loaded and the pc restarts the pc hangs. After trying this for about 20 times I decided to try something else. The PC had win98 on it so it was working .i loaded the pc with winxp pro but an older edition. It does not include any service packs .and seems to be running fine. Then I loaded servicepack one and still no problems with XP After loading the second service pack the pc hanged again at the startup.
My computer has been working fine. But all of a sudden my computer started hanging. Im sure it's not viruses or anything because I have ran many scans over and over.I have no clue what could be causing this. I've included my HJT log even though I've looked it over many a times and have found nothing.
I've run a number of anti-virus programs including Kaspersky, Avira and Avast. I've used Spyware Terminator, Super Anti-Spyware and Ad-Ware. Numerous runs of these programs has not solved the problem. I have not added any new hardware or other programs (besides the spyware and anti-virus). I've tried disabling the resident antivirus program, Avast but that doesn't seem to improve the situation. I am Any ideas about how to proceed from here?
i am running xp sp3 & vista in dual boot with xp set as default.Just yesterday while working in xp my system hanged. Now when i try to boot all app loaded desktop appears normal then within 5 min the system hangs i am unable to run any apps or call taskmanager, or even shutdown.,My computer opens but gives a NotResponding message.
the computer will "hang". It stops keeping time and will not shut down via the on-screen start button. If you try to shut the puter off with the on/off button on the tower, it is very difficult to get it to turn back on that way...the computer comes on, but never boots up...monitor and keyboard/mouse never come on. I've found that unplugging the power cord from the back of the tower while the computer has power, and then plugging the power cord back in usually works to bring the puter back on and up without using the on/off button. Once the puter is back on, it keeps time again (but it has to be reset to current time). Once in a while, some settings are lost such as IE options. But in the past, settings were so messed up from this problem that it couldn't copy to CD and other such annoying things.
I tired doing a windows update yesterday, computer would not let me perfom the action. The error message read: Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and install updates. This error may occur if the Remove access to use all Windows Update features group policy has been enabled by your system administrator and comes up with a windows error 0x8DDD0003 and have done a lot of the recommended fixes but nothing has worked.
My computer seems to be slowing down and hanging up every so often. When I start XP I go into task manager and see bunches of programs runnings. A lot of *.exe files. How do I get rid of them?? How do I know which ones to get rid of? They may be virous, extra junk form previous installs? I do run Nortons anti-virous program. I don't want to reformat and reinstall XP but I may need to.
lately my computer has been having these symtoms:- Hanging while left on and not used- Crashing Randomly, maybe 5 Minites into startup- Failing to start with a black screen where i should reach the login screen but i dont- Failing to start with the message "A Disk Read Error Has OccuredThe only way i have found around these problems, was taking the case off and disconnecting wires to the hard drive or the mother board and then putting them back in, even then i may have to restart it once or twice.

I got my new system.. its been working like a dream, a proper gaming behemoth!Having got my 22" monitor on friday, I decided that now was the time to give it an overclock and see how it would do I used Ntune (I know I know!) and it hung a couple of times during its mucking about with clock speeds, etc I went out to sort something out in the garden, came back in and the screen had gone black during another hang.I reset the computer and on boot up windows would start up with the same black screen.
AOL Broadband Checkup always hangs when I'm signed on. Computer Checkup works fine & will sign on automatically if needed. Not a major problem, I just want to get it fixed.

For some reason my system keeps hanging when booting up on the windows splash screen, then when i try to start it in safe mode it hang on /System32/Drivers /mup.sys . The problem started when i switched the case of the computer due to the power button beeing fauty. There has been no update of hardware apart from the case.
I am having a problem with various workstations hanging when trying to log in. Sometimes after powering down and restarting it will log on successfully, other times it still hangs. This same issue is happening at several of our school campuses, each with their independent domain.
recently XP hangs when i open anything to do with its properties (System Properties, Display Properties, System Config, Mouse & Keyboard Properties) Avast, MRT, Spybot has not found anything Trojan/Worm etc that could be the reason for this hanging.
This rather novice computer user is looking for a checklist of steps to diagnose an issue with XP hanging up on boot started last night.Current system is 3 1/2+ years old - Graphics card upgraded 2 years ago - running XP SP3 for games and email.Booting computer - starts up no problem - on XP screen with dots moving across it freezes after about 10 seconds. On restart I tried the restart from Last Known Good Configuration - same hang up same dot location.I can boot into Save Mode and it comes up. I ran CC Cleaner again including registry. Actually I may have run CC Cleaner before the hand up booting. An links on a step by step process I can follow so as not to make a problem any bigger would be helpful.
I was on my computer, listening to music, and then all of a sudden, my sound just stopped. Totally. Checked the volume control and everything. I was obviously curious as to why, so for some reason, I opened up the task manager to take a look at what was running. It was then that I saw "loader.exe" and "iexplore.exe" running. I didn't have Internet Explorer open, and I've never seen loader.exe before. Naturally, I googled it and was informed that it was some sort of spyware/malware. I ran MalwareBytes-AntiMalware and the results came back clean. Still, I searched for "loader.exe" on my computer and deleted it, and its prefetch file. The EXE was in a temp folder. After doing all of that, I decided to reboot to see if my sound will come back. Much to my dismay, not only did my sound not come back, Windows XP ITSELF did not come back either. My computer restarts and does the whole Asus thing it does at the beginning, and then the screen goes black. I never end up at the boot screen.
My system have a good configuration that AMD Athloan 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+, 3.01 GHz, 2GB RAM (DDR II ), 640 GB SATA HDD. I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2. My softwares are common and simple like Adobe Photoshop, Abbey Fine Reader, MS office etc. But still my system hangs with regular intervals and maximum slow. I can't play even a simple game, can't see a film or even I can't browse the internet smoothly. Often I am getting error messages like explorer not responding. I have formatted my system many times. But still the problem persists. How can I resolve this problem?
I start up my computer and then after a few minutes later, my computer screen goes black and automatically reboots on itself. After reboots it somehow hangs on me before getting into the login page of xp accounts.

i tried to run it under SAFE mode in case some app might be restricting it from functioning but to no use i even replaced the utility with the original one from my installation disk but even that didn't work out. but it seems theres some problem with the utility itself because i downloaded a 3rd party pinging utility and it worked just fine!
note: i have tested my firewall and antivirus options..they r not interfering.
I seem to be having a problem of hanging, and just overall slowness.I can get connected online, then it takes forever for my MSN home page to open. I thought perhaps something, somewhere, was haywire. Or perhaps you could tell me by viewing the log, which programs I have running that are unnecessary?
My computer hangs on shutdown & takes about 5 minutes to close down, I have emptied temp files, temp internet files, cookies, adaware checked, & had HJT check with nothing found, so guess it is either the software or RAM (480mb).I have a lot of images & also Webshots Desktop pics (which are mostly disabled but for about 4 images) could it be too much running in the background ? (when closing sometimes a box comes up saying saving files),
Often as of late, my system hangs when on the Internet (using Firefox 2.0.0.20). When I CTRL-ALT-DEL, it indicated that Firefox.exe is usually running at 80-98% CPU usage. My system is using Windows XP Home as an OS and it has a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor with 768 MB RAM.
I just got back from LA, and like any person would, I went straight to check my email. After around 30 mins of reading through mail, the entire screen froze. The mouse wouldn't move, the loading bar just stopped, etc. After around 10 mins, everything unfroze. I haven't installed any programs recently, and my computer worked fine before I left. This happens on average once every half an hour. Also, this only apparently happens on my account, not any other.
I am currently running XP on my system. About three days ago, my system suddenly started taking longer to boot. The extra boot time comes in the form of a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left, where my system does not appear to be doing anything. This screen appears immediately before the Windows XP loading screen. I have tried Tweak XP utilities to try and speed up my startup. Failing that, I tried a system restore to a few days prior to this strange occurrance. Every time I try to run system restore, however, I am confronted with an error upon startup that tells me that system restore was unsuccessful. I have tried a variety of system restore dates, and all have been unsuccessful. I have tried sweeps with Spysweeper and Norton, and neither have brought any more insight into this problem.
I've had this computer working for quite a while, at least a year, and I reinstalled XP a few days ago to rid the computer of spyware, etc. It installed with no errors, and worked fine for a few days after the reinstall. Last night I shut it down, started it back up this morning and it hangs on the Windows XP loading screen, the green bar keeps going through but it never boots. The same thing happens when I boot with the last good configuration that worked. When I boot in safe mode it hangs while it loads the safe mode files, the last one is Mup.exe, Mup.dll, or something that starts with Mup. MemTest86 shows no errors, so I guess its not the memory, and I don't know why anything would just stop working. I didn't install any new hardware, software, or drivers right before I shutdown last night. Here are my computer specs: Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard. Athlon 64 3200+ CPU. 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC3200 Kingston Value RAM (Non-ECC). 250GB SATA Hard Drive (It's either Maxtor or Seagate, if you really need to know which I can check).ATI X800XT Video Card. Windows XP with the SP1 CD, but I downloaded and installed SP2 and it was running fine with SP2 for a few days.
