Home Hanging On Shutdown
Jul 13, 2005
My computer hangs on shutdown & takes about 5 minutes to close down, I have emptied temp files, temp internet files, cookies, adaware checked, & had HJT check with nothing found, so guess it is either the software or RAM (480mb).I have a lot of images & also Webshots Desktop pics (which are mostly disabled but for about 4 images) could it be too much running in the background ? (when closing sometimes a box comes up saying saving files),

I'm first going to post my Computer specs before I go into what's happening. My computer use to and still is(not as much for some reason unknown reason)just switches off completely, no Windows is logging off or anything. Sometimes when I put my computer into Hibernate, I get a BSOD and when I switch my computer off or on it takes awhile to get into Windows(I think that's because of Panda Internet security, kills system resources) Also, XP freezes..I can do everything with the keyboard like get to Task Manager but basically the whole desktop freezes.I'm not sure when it started to do all this, and I doubt it's a Virus or any other malicious content. It's just even with 3gbs of RAM, XP seems slow, I can feel how and when my computer is going fast from when I upgraded my RAM from 2-3gb but I'm not feeling it because of the hanging.

I ran into a Trojan and finally after many attempts to remove, ended up using Microsoft's malicious software removal tool. (Free) and Norton's 2002 with updates. No slowdowns now while on the Web or local use. However It takes forever to shutdown. I went in and changed the normal shutdown time from 20000 to 5000 that seemed to solve it. The next day it slowed down again. I followed the instructions at Microsoft's website called Startup and shutdown trouble shooter. I went to msconfig and followed instructions. I found that if I disabled tfswctrl.exe, It would shut down fast. I read in a posting that the file is a HP file concerning DVD or Cd operations and isn't essential. PS I did run REG Organizer 1.4 in the automatic reg cleaner mode and it found additional problems that it repaired and some bad folders and links that were bad. That didn't solve the shut down length.
So my question is there a way to solve this dilemma, like an update? or can I just keep it from running without effecting my 2 CD/dvd units. both are HP one is Cd write and DVD read and the other is DVD/CD write both.

I have a different computer, and when I go on it for about 15 minutes (tops) it just shuts down, with no warning at all. It is a Windows XP Home Edition SP1. I have thousands of songs and my father has very important files on that computer.

This is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

When attempting to "shutdown" or "reboot", I have to do it twice. When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.

This rather novice computer user is looking for a checklist of steps to diagnose an issue with XP hanging up on boot started last night.Current system is 3 1/2+ years old - Graphics card upgraded 2 years ago - running XP SP3 for games and email.Booting computer - starts up no problem - on XP screen with dots moving across it freezes after about 10 seconds. On restart I tried the restart from Last Known Good Configuration - same hang up same dot location.I can boot into Save Mode and it comes up. I ran CC Cleaner again including registry. Actually I may have run CC Cleaner before the hand up booting. An links on a step by step process I can follow so as not to make a problem any bigger would be helpful.

I was on my computer, listening to music, and then all of a sudden, my sound just stopped. Totally. Checked the volume control and everything. I was obviously curious as to why, so for some reason, I opened up the task manager to take a look at what was running. It was then that I saw "loader.exe" and "iexplore.exe" running. I didn't have Internet Explorer open, and I've never seen loader.exe before. Naturally, I googled it and was informed that it was some sort of spyware/malware. I ran MalwareBytes-AntiMalware and the results came back clean. Still, I searched for "loader.exe" on my computer and deleted it, and its prefetch file. The EXE was in a temp folder. After doing all of that, I decided to reboot to see if my sound will come back. Much to my dismay, not only did my sound not come back, Windows XP ITSELF did not come back either. My computer restarts and does the whole Asus thing it does at the beginning, and then the screen goes black. I never end up at the boot screen.

I can't place exactly when this started, but I'd say maybe 2-3 months ago. The computer just seems to be hanging all the time: windows sometimes take a long time to open, programs hang, frequent "sorry, gotta close this program" messages, etc, etc.
I don't know the exact time sequence, but it does seem that installing IE8 didn't help the situation; I get constant hangs and windows taking forever to open, having to shut down, etc.
I have XP pro.

i tried to run it under SAFE mode in case some app might be restricting it from functioning but to no use i even replaced the utility with the original one from my installation disk but even that didn't work out.
but it seems theres some problem with the utility itself because i downloaded a 3rd party pinging utility and it worked just fine!
note: i have tested my firewall and antivirus options..they r not interfering.

I seem to be having a problem of hanging, and just overall slowness.I can get connected online, then it takes forever for my MSN home page to open. I thought perhaps something, somewhere, was haywire. Or perhaps you could tell me by viewing the log, which programs I have running that are unnecessary?

I just got back from LA, and like any person would, I went straight to check my email. After around 30 mins of reading through mail, the entire screen froze. The mouse wouldn't move, the loading bar just stopped, etc.
After around 10 mins, everything unfroze. I haven't installed any programs recently, and my computer worked fine before I left. This happens on average once every half an hour. Also, this only apparently happens on my account, not any other.

I am currently running XP on my system. About three days ago, my system suddenly started taking longer to boot. The extra boot time comes in the form of a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left, where my system does not appear to be doing anything. This screen appears immediately before the Windows XP loading screen. I have tried Tweak XP utilities to try and speed up my startup. Failing that, I tried a system restore to a few days prior to this strange occurrance. Every time I try to run system restore, however, I am confronted with an error upon startup that tells me that system restore was unsuccessful. I have tried a variety of system restore dates, and all have been unsuccessful. I have tried sweeps with Spysweeper and Norton, and neither have brought any more insight into this problem.

I've had this computer working for quite a while, at least a year, and I reinstalled XP a few days ago to rid the computer of spyware, etc. It installed with no errors, and worked fine for a few days after the reinstall. Last night I shut it down, started it back up this morning and it hangs on the Windows XP loading screen, the green bar keeps going through but it never boots. The same thing happens when I boot with the last good configuration that worked. When I boot in safe mode it hangs while it loads the safe mode files, the last one is Mup.exe, Mup.dll, or something that starts with Mup. MemTest86 shows no errors, so I guess its not the memory, and I don't know why anything would just stop working. I didn't install any new hardware, software, or drivers right before I shutdown last night. Here are my computer specs: Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard. Athlon 64 3200+ CPU. 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC3200 Kingston Value RAM (Non-ECC). 250GB SATA Hard Drive (It's either Maxtor or Seagate, if you really need to know which I can check).ATI X800XT Video Card. Windows XP with the SP1 CD, but I downloaded and installed SP2 and it was running fine with SP2 for a few days.

I am using a laptop I am not very familar wth but it has been working fine for a few years until recently whenever I turn it on it gives me choices to start normally or safe mode, and whichever I choose, starting normally the loading screen loads infintely or loading the required drivers for safe mode stalls after Mup.sys. I have looked around and tried to boot from the winxp cd to attempt a repair console but as soon as I switch on the computer it almost immediately goes to the safe mode selection screen after flashing Toshiba for a few seconds, and from here I can't do anything. I can't get into BIOS, or bypass anything. There might be a quick keyboard command I am not aware of but I seem to be stuck in a loop. The computer is a Toshiba Protege A100.

After starting my computer some programs won't start within the first two-three minutes after XP has finished loading. Winamp (5.5) shows the main window frame but doesn't load any further, Ad-Watch 2007 doesn't load while Ad-Watch SE loads fine, MSN Messenger doesn't load at all and IE7 starts but refuses to load any web pages. Firefox and Word 2007 are not affected. All of these annoyances disappear entirely after about three minutes after which all programs work just fine. In the three minute time frame I am also unable to access My Computer which just shows the flashlight looking for drives. I am, however, able to access files by using shortcuts to eg My Documents.

Long story but I've been having some serious issues with my dell desktop and XP... here's the story in chronilogical order. My system was running fine other than the fact that a friend noticed the hard drive was clicking frequently when the system was idle (about every 2 seconds) - he suggested I may have a virus. My own virus scan/shield (PC-cillin) never identified anything. I installed Avast and ran a boot scan - some form of Trojan was found and deleted. Some form of Adware was also found and deleted. Sometime either just before or immediately after the boot scan I started having problems. XP would startup quite quickly. I would log into one of the two user profiles (home edition of XP) but when I tried to launch IE it would sit for 10 minutes and not connect to anything. After about 10 minutes the page would finally load and everything would seemingly work fine. Note that during this time I could go to cmd and ping sites no problem. I started troubleshooting and realized that it was not just IE that would sit and hang - other system applications such as System Properties, Add Remove Programs, etc would take about 10 minutes immediately after startup before they would do anything. Once the system "woke up" it would seem like everything operated fine. To try to cure this I tried; - uninstalling several unnecessary applications- uninstalled Avast - installed AVG and scanned (everything clean)- removed all programs from Startup / Run - disconnected mapped drives, removed sharing from folders - resetting IE to defaults. None of which solved the problem. I tried booting into safemode and the system did seem to operate much better but of course I couldn't browse the web etc.I since reinstalled Avast and reran the bootscan - came up clean. I have just recently tried System Restore to a date where everything was fine. Now XP won't start up. I get to the profile page, choose my profile and it just hangs on a blank desktop. what I haven't tried yet is booting into safemode and running a virus scan. With the system restore causing me to hang I'm not 100% sure I can even boot into safe mode but will try when I'm back home tonight. If I'm successful I'll likely undo the system restore, turn off system restore, run virus scan in safemode.
