i am running xp sp3 & vista in dual boot with xp set as default.Just yesterday while working in xp my system hanged.Now when i try to boot all app loaded desktop appears normal then within 5 min the system hangs i am unable to run any apps or call taskmanager, or even shutdown.,My computer opens but gives a NotResponding message.
View 9 RepliesThis rather novice computer user is looking for a checklist of steps to diagnose an issue with XP hanging up on boot started last night.Current system is 3 1/2+ years old - Graphics card upgraded 2 years ago - running XP SP3 for games and email.Booting computer - starts up no problem - on XP screen with dots moving across it freezes after about 10 seconds.On restart I tried the restart from Last Known Good Configuration - same hang up same dot location.I can boot into Save Mode and it comes up. I ran CC Cleaner again including registry. Actually I may have run CC Cleaner before the hand up booting.An links on a step by step process I can follow so as not to make a problem any bigger would be helpful.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was on my computer, listening to music, and then all of a sudden, my sound just stopped. Totally. Checked the volume control and everything. I was obviously curious as to why, so for some reason, I opened up the task manager to take a look at what was running. It was then that I saw "loader.exe" and "iexplore.exe" running. I didn't have Internet Explorer open, and I've never seen loader.exe before. Naturally, I googled it and was informed that it was some sort of spyware/malware. I ran MalwareBytes-AntiMalware and the results came back clean. Still, I searched for "loader.exe" on my computer and deleted it, and its prefetch file. The EXE was in a temp folder.After doing all of that, I decided to reboot to see if my sound will come back. Much to my dismay, not only did my sound not come back, Windows XP ITSELF did not come back either. My computer restarts and does the whole Asus thing it does at the beginning, and then the screen goes black. I never end up at the boot screen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedToday when booting up the pc, chkdsk autostarts (it usually doesn't..) but it hangs in the same place each time.I'm running XP (updated), but not in English, so the quotes are translated as accuratly as I can: It first confirms files (step 1 of 3) It then confirms index(?) (2 of 3) It then says "Correcting error in index $I30 for the file 106330" (twice)And then "sorting index $ I30 in file 106330" Then it just stand like that (waited 3 hrs).There is no sort of "work noise" or lights from the machine, just the fans.. I've tried restarting a few times, but no difference.The only thing I did yesterday that might have had this kind of effect is installing Gimp, but I can't see how.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't place exactly when this started, but I'd say maybe 2-3 months ago. The computer just seems to be hanging all the time: windows sometimes take a long time to open, programs hang, frequent "sorry, gotta close this program" messages, etc, etc.
I don't know the exact time sequence, but it does seem that installing IE8 didn't help the situation; I get constant hangs and windows taking forever to open, having to shut down, etc.
I have XP pro.
Please help. I have upgraded a machine from 98 to XP pro. Now on start up, the pc hangs/freezes on the windows XP screen, the one with the blue scrollong bar at the bottom.

BTW, XP Pro SP2 and I use the CTRL+ALT+DEL to get into my computer instead of the other thing. Everything works fine in safe mode.

The startup process just stops, the screen stays black, the hard disk drive goes quiet and the activity light stays on (rather than the normal flickering).All I can do when this happens is hold down the power button until the power goes off.Also, when it does startup properly, after logging into XP it takes an unusually long time to load the settings,startup programs, etc and sometimes some of the normal system tray icons dont appear at all
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have been trying for quite a while to load a new xp pro with service pack 2 .As soon as the files are loaded and the pc restarts the pc hangs. After trying this for about 20 times I decided to try something else.The PC had win98 on it so it was working .i loaded the pc with winxp pro but an older edition.It does not include any service packs .and seems to be running fine.Then I loaded servicepack one and still no problems with XP After loading the second service pack the pc hanged again at the startup.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've run a number of anti-virus programs including Kaspersky, Avira and Avast. I've used Spyware Terminator, Super Anti-Spyware and Ad-Ware. Numerous runs of these programs has not solved the problem. I have not added any new hardware or other programs (besides the spyware and anti-virus). I've tried disabling the resident antivirus program, Avast but that doesn't seem to improve the situation. I am Any ideas about how to proceed from here?
View 4 Replies View Relatedthe computer will "hang". It stops keeping time and will not shut down via the on-screen start button. If you try to shut the puter off with the on/off button on the tower, it is very difficult to get it to turn back on that way...the computer comes on, but never boots up...monitor and keyboard/mouse never come on. I've found that unplugging the power cord from the back of the tower while the computer has power, and then plugging the power cord back in usually works to bring the puter back on and up without using the on/off button. Once the puter is back on, it keeps time again (but it has to be reset to current time). Once in a while, some settings are lost such as IE options. But in the past, settings were so messed up from this problem that it couldn't copy to CD and other such annoying things.
I have XP and I am lagging bad, pics won't load. I've tried to do bitdefender and my computer shuts down half way through every time.

The error message read: Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and install updates. This error may occur if the Remove access to use all Windows Update features group policy has been enabled by your system administrator and comes up with a windows error 0x8DDD0003 and have done a lot of the recommended fixes but nothing has worked.
My computer seems to be slowing down and hanging up every so often. When I start XP I go into task manager and see bunches of programs runnings. A lot of *.exe files. How do I get rid of them?? How do I know which ones to get rid of? They may be virous, extra junk form previous installs? I do run Nortons anti-virous program. I don't want to reformat and reinstall XP but I may need to.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got my new system.. its been working like a dream, a proper gaming behemoth!Having got my 22" monitor on friday, I decided that now was the time to give it an overclock and see how it would do I used Ntune (I know I know!) and it hung a couple of times during its mucking about with clock speeds, etc I went out to sort something out in the garden, came back in and the screen had gone black during another hang.I reset the computer and on boot up windows would start up with the same black screen.

Whenever I try to hibernate my computer, the message, "Insufficient system resources to complete the API." comes up. Afterwards, anything concerning hibernation disappear and the hibernation button cannot be clicked. My system details are as follows: Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP Media Center Edition. 1.73 ghz processor with 1.50 gb of ram. (I have heard that having over 1.0 gb of ram might cause this, but I could not find anything that could fix it.)

I could boot both xp and media center but the vista boot screen always shows up and would have to go into "ealier versions of windows" and choose my OS from there. I read somewhere to get rid of the vista boot screen I should delete "bootmgr" file and "boot" folder from the root of C: I did this and now nothing works. It went to the "xp was not shutdown properly,boot to safe mode, or last known working settings screen, ETC". None of the options work, i have tried all of them, safe mode and last known working settings included. When i select one of the options, the hardrive spins up, and then my gfx card bios info and mobo splash screen come on. Well, i think it might be because i ran a 'virus remover' for the game gmod, this was the first time the computer had been booted since i ran it.

For some reason my system keeps hanging when booting up on the windows splash screen, then when i try to start it in safe mode it hang on /System32/Drivers /mup.sys . The problem started when i switched the case of the computer due to the power button beeing fauty. There has been no update of hardware apart from the case.
