Choose Program You Want To Use To Open This File - Opening C
Jan 6, 2008
Every time I try to open C: (while going to My Computer > Double Click C it gives me the "choose program you want to use to open this file > File C:" i also get this whenever i try to open other drives (usb, external, drives)
Every time I right click on a file and chose open with then choose program it always, with out fail, no matter what the extension, assumes I mean notepad.exe. AVIs to Zip files get Notepad. I suspect a registry entry but I don't know where to look and Google failed to find anything close to what i was looking for. The problem first occurred with my HOSTS file. I typed the c:windowssystem32driversetchosts into my run and instead of the Choose program it immediately opened in notepad, convenient in that instances but not the majority of the time...
I have checked for Spyware (clean), run AVG (clean), and I am very reluctant to reinstall windows, again. Last time they tried to force me to purchase a new copy of windows pro after installing it and activating it on the SAME system (not this computer) for the third time. They wanted to know when/where/ and what model I purchased.
hope I'm in the right place.... When I log on my home PC (Window XP with Office 2003), I'd like Outlook and Explorer to open automatically, rather than having to select them from the Start menu.
To start your Windows-Explorer in any Directory that you want it to start. Most people start the Windows-Explorer by clicking on a shortcut to the Windows-Explorer program. Noramlly the Windows-Explorer starts in the "My Documents" Directory. If you want Windows-Explorer to start in a different Directory, just follow the steps below:1) Right-Click the shortcut to the Windows-Explorer2) Choose "Properties"3) On the "Shortcut" Tab, you see something like:"Target: %SystemRoot%explorer.exe"(without the quotes).4) You have to change this into: "%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n, /e, D:" (without quotes). Instead of "D:" you can choose any path you like. In the example above, windows-explorer will start in "D:"
When I put in a CD Rom disk and I try to run a program there is an error window and it sais,"16 bit Windows Subsystem C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Chose 'close' to terminate the application." Than there are two buttons Close and Ignore. When I click Ignore nothing happens. When I click Close nothing happens too. This only happens to a couple of my CD's, not all. They worked before but now they don't.
Has anyone heard of an 03 file extension or a program that will open these files. I have searched for this extension on the net but came up with nothing. I am wondering is there such a file.
I have installed XP and am using it, but I read in the manual that came with it that I can "choose a file system." It describes FAT32 and NTFS. I have not changed to NTFS. What advice can anyone give me as to whether or not I should change to NTFS?

I am having some problems with my computer and cant really pinpoint the problem.the computer is a Q6600 - but when opening a program, opening a file from a program, there is always a lag, it would freeze for 5 to 10 seconds before anything happens. I suspected adware/virus, but it's not. I tried installing a fresh copy of windows XP onto a new hard drive, but the lag/slow problem is still there, usually it takes no more than 30 minutes to install windows, but it took over 1hr 30 mins to install.I am thinking hard ware issue, I've tried replacing the RAMs, but still the same, now im thinking maybe the powersupply.
I was able to open the windows it self but the problem is i can't open any program most of the time. i did virus scan system mechanic thingy but still it wont let me open a program. but 1 suspicious thing ive noticed is that is happening when im turing the internet on. Inspiron 530 with 4 gb mem quadcore processor, belkin n adapter wondows xp.
When I try to open a folder of a program it doesn't work. I click the folder and the mouse changes to the mouse and hourglass picture but nothing happens after that. Sometimes I get that error sound but no message pops up. Then the title on the title bar of my applications goes blank and I no longer can click the menu that says file, edit, view,It highlights it but it won't let me click it. I also cannot right click anymore and when I try to reset my computer, it highlights it but I can't click that either.I also can't open the task manager when it happens nor can I type in my address bar or open a new tab for my browser.. I tried running a virus scan but it catch anything so I have no idea what I can do. I've tried system restore but that didn't fix it.
Tried 4 times in a row to open MSN Messenger and got no response. Windows task manager showed only one other program that I had open at the time. So I decided to reboot and see if that helped. While shutting down I got "end program" 4 times in a row. Not sure if this is a big deal. Is something lurking somewhere that might be causing this?
After a format and opening My Computer which i have set to open as Explorer and selecting the view to List, i click tools>folder options>view > apply to all folders, then i change the my computer folder to view details but the thing is My computer shows detail but all other folders remain in icons. Why won't they be in List? I uploaded a 2 screens First one of how one of how everyother folder looks like the Second My Computer looks like when clicking on My Computer. Now after setting the option in My computer for view clicking tools>folder options>view tab>apply to all folders. The folder view only changes for My Computer all other folders remain unchanged.
I was on my computer then after i went to the sony site to check the forums my ps2 just stopped responding.None of my programs are responding without taking 5 minutes to load even hijack this took about 5 minutes
I have a problem that is more irritating than serious. Every time Windows XP starts a window opens displaying the contents of the folder Program Files. It doesn't take more than a second or two to close the window but I find it frustrating that I am unable to prevent it from happening. I suspect that the answer lies somewhere in the Register but I have no idea where.
I was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).
Why can't I get XP to open every folder using the "Details" option? I do have it set so that it remembers (most of the time) to re-open that folder with the file view it was in when it was closed, but I want XP to open every new and old folder with the "file details" view. Seems like a simple thing, but I can't get XP to understand that's what I want.
I am trying to access an encrypted folder, which is on the hdd of my broken laptop. The hdd is now connected to another computer. I cant open the folder, the message is access is denied.Presumably the key information that is needed is on the hdd somewhere? The laptop was running windows xp media centre 2005,The computer with which i am trying to access the file is running xp professional.
I've always been able to open wk1 files in Excel. Now, I'm getting error: "Your are attempting to open a file type that is blocked by your registry policy setting" Don't know what's going on - added the wk1 file type in Folder Options & associated it with Excel - same message. Deleted that and am back to where I started.
I am trying to move my deleted messages in Outlook Ex.6 on my old computer to my new computer as references. I have moved the pst file to the Outlook Express folder on the new computer. Now,how do I load this file into my deleted message folder on my new system.(XP Pro).
I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago
I was doing some detailed drawings in photoshop, and I also had a generic photo up in photoshop as well. I went to save my drawings, but apparently accidentally saved the photo under the drawins name and then closed the program. This morning I discovered the bad news. Is there a way to get that drawing back? I do not know if it was ever saved before.
I create an excel file using XL97sr2 running under win98se and email it to someone running XP-home(using a limited acct) and gets the following XL97sr2 error message when trying to open my file:(In a MS Visual Basic window) Permission to use object denied [hitting Help shows error 419] Tools-Options is greyed out on the XL menu. Other friends with XP and XL(I don't know the versions) have no trouble opening it.
