AVIs to Zip files get Notepad. I suspect a registry entry but I don't know where to look and Google failed to find anything close to what i was looking for. I have checked for Spyware (clean), run AVG (clean), and I am very reluctant to reinstall windows, again. Last time they tried to force me to purchase a new copy of windows pro after installing it and activating it on the SAME system (not this computer) for the third time. They wanted to know when/where/ and what model I purchased.
Has anyone heard of an 03 file extension or a program that will open these files. I have searched for this extension on the net but came up with nothing. I am wondering is there such a file.

View 3 Replies View RelatedTo start your Windows-Explorer in any Directory that you want it to start. Most people start the Windows-Explorer by clicking on a shortcut to the Windows-Explorer program. Noramlly the Windows-Explorer starts in the "My Documents" Directory. If you want Windows-Explorer to start in a different Directory, just follow the steps below:1) Right-Click the shortcut to the Windows-Explorer2) Choose "Properties"3) On the "Shortcut" Tab, you see something like:"Target: %SystemRoot%explorer.exe"(without the quotes).4) You have to change this into: "%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n, /e, D:" (without quotes). Instead of "D:" you can choose any path you like. In the example above, windows-explorer will start in "D:"
View 9 Replies View RelatedI picked up some crappy malware called ?Windows Police? last night while I was surfing for player info for my fantasy football league. I immediately ran a scan using AVG, but in my impatience and worry over getting this infection I googled for information and found instructions at this web site. So I mistakenly tried to follow them. Unfortunately I must have made an error in there somewhere because now I?m having problems opening program files. AVG scrubbed the virus but now I cannot open program files. Either the program cannot be found or I get the ?Open With? pop up menu. I?ve tried to run the WMI diagnostic but can?t get that to work either. Is this fixable?

Whenever you try to open up a program, it will either say "(Program name).exe" is missing" but when you go find the .exe file it is there. Or a new window will pop up asking what you want to open the program with. he doesn't know what files they were. Ive tried system restore, and restoring files in the recycle bin.

It will however load if I am already in the program which usually opens it. Beside them it says SIG file, which I have no idea what that means. Also, it is just a blank box beside the file name (in my documents list) when usually there is a mini icon showing which program will work to open it.

1.I cannot open the "Properties " Dialog box in the "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. In Control Panel, I right-click "Add/Remove Programs" to open the "Properties" Dialog box. But, when I right-click, all that appears is "Open" and "Create Shortcut." The same goes for all the programs in the Control Panel, except a handful may display a 3rd option..."Explore." However, I can click to "Open" any of the programs in the Control Panel. My problem in this case is the "Properties "dialog box is not available. There must be a way to restore this command option.
2. It might be related in some way to Problem # 1. I cannot open "Add/Remove Windows Components" in "Add Remove/Programs." In Control Panel, I click to open "Add/Remove Programs, and click on "Add/Remove Windows Components." It will not open. Instead, this message box appears: "Setup was unable to open information file games.inf. Contact your System Administrator. The specific error code is 0x2 at line 0." I click "OK" and the next message box reads: "The application could not be initialized."
Recently my father downloaded a Windows update thing that included the newest version of Windows Media Player, and since then I have had trouble getting my preferred media player to work with files. I can still open up it up and select a file, but it is impossible to add it to the "Open with" list, which is annoying. No error messages pop up or anything, but when I go to Browse in the "Open with" window and select the program, it just reverts to the (unchanged) "Open with" window.

I can't right click on a jpg and set it as background and it wont detect any of the wallpapers i have in my pictures folder like it used to. The only wallpapers it will use are the default windows wallpapers or anything i set to wallpaper by right clicking on an image online. As for my other problem, I can't get files to open with the correct program. I know i can set a file type to always open with a certain prgram, but that isnt working. Example: I have a .max file which should open in 3ds max. Instead it opens in nothing and stay a blank file with no icon. I can still open it by opening up the program and opening it from there, but it's annoying. My winamp play lists also all seem to want to open in windows media player no matter how many time i tell them to always open in winamp.
I've noticed another problem after restarting that I don't normally have. When I log in i get this Preparing to Install. Please wait while windows find 'new copy' ERROR 1706. No valid source could be found for this product NewCopy. The windows installer can not continue.(I press ok)....

I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.

View 14 Replies View RelatedOne of my co-workers has been having this odd problem and I'm not sure what to make of it. On occasion, she goes to open an INDD (Adobe InDesign) file which is stored on our Windows 2003 server, and it opens as "read-only." She opens the file to make changes and can't because InDesign won't let her save any changes to the file. There's no apparent reason for this - she has full access to the file, the file's read-only bit has not been set, and there's plenty of space on the server. What she usually does to get around it is to "Save As." over the file she's just opened. That normally works. On occasion this doesn't work and she has to "Save As." to her desktop, then "Save As." back over the original. It's a pain for her at the very least.
What's odd is that I've checked the "open files" list on that Windows 2003 server when she gets the error. Her workstation suddenly opens a whole handful of zip files located on the same Windows 2003 server (some of our digital artwork comes in zip packages). They are opened in read mode only (READ, not READ-WRITE).When she does her "save as." and gets past the error, the read locks/handles on the zip files are closed also. The ZIP thing sounded suspicious to me and I scanned her computer (as well as the ZIPs) for viruses. Nothing came up. I have since even re-installed the entire operating system (Windows XP Professional, SP2) and still the same behavior. Now what's funny is it's only InDesign (CS). All of her other apps (even other Adobe apps) seem to behave correctly.
I've even inspected her network wiring and replaced her aged CAT5 with brand-new CAT5e, which needed to be done anyway. (we run gigabit). Net connections are solid (she's only 20-30 feet away from my office where all the office switches are located, which makes things easier). No one else in the office has the problem, and her computer (and software installed) is comparable to everyone else's, at least in her department.
Our software is too old to get support from Adobe (upgrading to CS3 isn't financially feasible at the moment but not sure an upgrade would help if I don't know what the problem is), and I've tried the official Adobe forums with no luck. I didn't get very far - most of the people on that forum aren't PC/NET tech experts, just Adobe users (for the most part). It seems that way, anyway.I guess I'm running out of ideas. What should I do to figure out what's going on here?
To set the icon of any drive (hard disk, cd rom or anything else) with a letter (C: etc.), run REGEDIT (Start -> Run -> regedit) Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer
If one doesn't already exist, create a new KEY called "DriveIcons". Under this key, create a new key with the letter of your drive. I.e. C for your C: drive. To change the icon for that drive, create a key inside that one called DefaultIcon and set the path of (Default) to the location of your icon eg CDefaultIcon hen (Default) = D:DocumentsC Drive Icon.ico To change the name of that drive, create a key in the drive letter one (eg C) called DefaultLabel and set the (Default) to what you want the drive to be called. This is useful if you want to assign a long name to the floppy drive.
I was hijacked, cleaned everything out and got my browser up and running again. Now, in a bizarre twist, every single app i have automatically opens with Notepad. Everything--even RUN--opens with notepad. Yahoo, Run, Norton, all antispy programs, turbo tax, you name it.When I boot up, instead of having a bunch of programs load and sit on my toolbar, i just get 10 Notepad windows of spaghetti. Hence, even run commands are not going to cut it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).
