Cannot Open Properties Dialog Box For Add / Remove Program Files
Feb 15, 2010
If anyone can solve this problem effectively, they need to be congratulated, because I have scoured the internet for hours without success.
1.I cannot open the "Properties " Dialog box in the "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. In Control Panel, I right-click "Add/Remove Programs" to open the "Properties" Dialog box. But, when I right-click, all that appears is "Open" and "Create Shortcut." The same goes for all the programs in the Control Panel, except a handful may display a 3rd option..."Explore." However, I can click to "Open" any of the programs in the Control Panel. My problem in this case is the "Properties "dialog box is not available. There must be a way to restore this command option.
2. It might be related in some way to Problem # 1. I cannot open "Add/Remove Windows Components" in "Add Remove/Programs." In Control Panel, I click to open "Add/Remove Programs, and click on "Add/Remove Windows Components." It will not open. Instead, this message box appears: "Setup was unable to open information file games.inf. Contact your System Administrator. The specific error code is 0x2 at line 0." I click "OK" and the next message box reads: "The application could not be initialized."
Few days ago I happened to come across a free anti-spyware program and install it. However it appear to be too intrusive and slow down my system and a few hours later I uninstall it.After that whenever I boot my system, there are numerous "Run As" dialogue box appear. The contents of the dialogue box are as follows: Which user account do you want to use to run this program? When I click "OK" the program will then proceed to run and which I have to click quite a number of "Run As" dialogue box for all the background program to run. If not it will struck there until I click "OK".Not only that whenever I run any software program the "Run As" dialogue box will appear and I have to click "OK" in order for the program to run. Some of the programs are affected as it cannot run properly.
Below you will find all the help offered so far that has not worked. But I have a question. THe guy says go into the registry and delete those keys. I looked and they are not there in the HKLM are. However they are in the HKLU. So do I delete them out of there. And will this bring back my tabs that I am trying to get back. Does any MVP know...........
when I right click the desktop and choose properties, the "Display Properties" dialog box appears but it doesn't have any tabs. The only thing showing is "Themes". No "Desktop" tab, no "Appearance" tab. No Tabs at all. I havn't installed any new video card drivers or any new software. Also, I noticed that if I switch themes (XP to Classic) the tabs reappear. But when I close the box and reopen it, there gone. It almost looks like the "Display Properties" box has been resized. I say that because when the tabs are there,(after a theme switch), and I click on the "Appearance" tab, the "Effects" and "Advanced" buttons at the bottom look a little "cramped". Actually the bottom of the "Advanced" button is missing(hidden). But when the tabs at the top are missing the two buttons look normal. Is there a way I can resize the "Display Properties" box?
when ever i start any video application it shows that something has gone wrong and prog is to be closed, and pror closes everything on desktop closes and disappear only to reappear again after some time.
I was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).
I am using Adobe flash cs3 and other adobe softwares as well as other softwares.when i try to open any flash file using open with list it showing TWO Adobe Flash cs3 program names Remaing other program names are showing only one time.
How to clear that unwanted program form open with list..i try to this solution
I picked up some crappy malware called ?Windows Police? last night while I was surfing for player info for my fantasy football league. I immediately ran a scan using AVG, but in my impatience and worry over getting this infection I googled for information and found instructions at this web site. So I mistakenly tried to follow them. Unfortunately I must have made an error in there somewhere because now I?m having problems opening program files. AVG scrubbed the virus but now I cannot open program files. Either the program cannot be found or I get the ?Open With? pop up menu. I?ve tried to run the WMI diagnostic but can?t get that to work either. Is this fixable?
A message popped up asking him to delete some certain files, which he did, and now the computer isn't running good. Whenever you try to open up a program, it will either say "(Program name).exe" is missing" but when you go find the .exe file it is there. Or a new window will pop up asking what you want to open the program with. he doesn't know what files they were. Ive tried system restore, and restoring files in the recycle bin.
Whenever I startup my computer C:Program Files opens on its own. I've seen other posts where others have a similar situation with the My Documents folder opening. I have tried the methods for correcting that issue but nothing has worked so far.
I removed a program via the add/remove programs and it seemed as though everything was removed... no traces of it on the desktop or via the start up menu. However, browsing through, (is it still windows explorer?), I saw that the folder is still there and full of goodies. Can I just delete the entire main folder? I get nervous in and around there since something is always sharing something from somewhere else.
I have a Windows XP Pro computer at work. When I start the machine, I normally login to our work domain thru the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" login dialog. The company domain is selected by default or you can select the local computer. The company domain is controlled by a server running Small Business Server 2003.This computer is now going to be used at home for personnal use. How do I get rid of that "business" login and get back to the normal XP login? Normal XP login being the screen with the list of users and their associated icons.
Has anyone heard of an 03 file extension or a program that will open these files. I have searched for this extension on the net but came up with nothing. I am wondering is there such a file.
I cant open exe files on my computer. It comes up with the notice that It cant find a program for it on my computer and it I want to manually search for a program or use a web service to find an appropriate program. The web service button dont work.
When I go to my documents the document is listed there but when I click to open it, it won't load. It will however load if I am already in the program which usually opens it. Beside them it says SIG file, which I have no idea what that means. Also, it is just a blank box beside the file name (in my documents list) when usually there is a mini icon showing which program will work to open it.
All of the shortcuts (.lnk) on my fathers computer seen to have defaulted to open with a single program. I need to know how to change this back as I cannot go through EVERY .lnk file on the PC and tell it what program to open with...
After right clicking a file open with choose app.( to place a check mark in the box " always use the selected program to open this file" is greyed out? I cannot place a check mark here, so as to open with a set program, in this case, using (Open Office 2.2)Need some guidance. OS XP HOme SP2.
I do a newsletter for a group I belong to. I use MS Word. I have one member who cannot open the attachment. He says he gets the Dialog Box Open error. Can someone help me.I have researched as best I could, but all I can find is associtions. He needs to associate the Word attachment to MS Word or his word processor to open it. I think he has another program trying to open it at the same time.
Running Windows XP SP2 and I have just noticed in the couple days, that whenever I use an open/save as dialog box (to open/save a song in from firefox, to send a file in messenger etc), all the files are getting listed and arranged by name in reverse order (z-a).They were always getting displayed by name in the right order, which I assume is the default, until recently.Any idea on how I could get it back that way? I know it is a minor issue, but it has really decreased the speed with which I look through my system.I've tried arranging the icons by name, but it never seems to save.
Recently I underwent a heavy attack of trojans and viruses. After having cleaned them all out using VET, I noticed that in my profile in XP I don't have a Properties Dialog Box anymore, just an HTML page.
When i browse through my c drive and open program files i get an Error saying Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. The error signature says:
I restarted my computer and now i cant open any of my programs. It appears the links are missing.for example, in the program files menu (start > all programs) there are no icon pictures anymore just blank icons.when i double click to open .exe files nothing occurs.(the problems occured after i restarted my computer and messages popped up asking if i wanted to change registry settings for a variety of different things so i said no to all messages)
Recently my father downloaded a Windows update thing that included the newest version of Windows Media Player, and since then I have had trouble getting my preferred media player to work with files. I can still open up it up and select a file, but it is impossible to add it to the "Open with" list, which is annoying. No error messages pop up or anything, but when I go to Browse in the "Open with" window and select the program, it just reverts to the (unchanged) "Open with" window.
I cant change my background like I should normally be able to. I can't right click on a jpg and set it as background and it wont detect any of the wallpapers i have in my pictures folder like it used to. The only wallpapers it will use are the default windows wallpapers or anything i set to wallpaper by right clicking on an image online. As for my other problem, I can't get files to open with the correct program. I know i can set a file type to always open with a certain prgram, but that isnt working. Example: I have a .max file which should open in 3ds max. Instead it opens in nothing and stay a blank file with no icon. I can still open it by opening up the program and opening it from there, but it's annoying. My winamp play lists also all seem to want to open in windows media player no matter how many time i tell them to always open in winamp.
I've noticed another problem after restarting that I don't normally have. When I log in i get this Preparing to Install. Please wait while windows find 'new copy' ERROR 1706. No valid source could be found for this product NewCopy. The windows installer can not continue.(I press ok)....
recently I have received three files via the internet. I download and save them into my folder, but then cannot open them, the message tells me to open from a program and I am using internet explorer to do this, but when I click on the files they won't let me open them - what am I doing wrong?
When you click File, Open, in a Windows program like FrontPage, Word or Excel, you see 5 icons for My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Documents, My Computer, and My Network places. Is there a way to customize the Look in pane and remove or add any locations here? I would like to add the My Webs folder to this pane.
