I downloaded EZ Trust Antivirus 2005, but am not able to install it on my Windows XP 2002, Service pack 2, Dell Optiplex Dim2400. The original download was done on my personal desktop and then copied to "admin" desktop. The error message is "You do not have authority to run this program, please log on as administrator." This error appears even in safe mode and even when I am logged on as administrator.

View 9 Replies View RelatedCan anyone help me to understand the following behavior I have seen on my system regarding Windows auto updates.On 2 different occasions there have been 20+ recommended windows updates. Initially there were just 2 (Windows Installer 3.1 and KB898461). I noticed there were 20+ after opening Outlook Express for the first time (which auto loaded windows messenger and put itself in the registry to run before my security programs). I changed my settings on outlook express, and messenger (and removed it from the registry). After changing this and rebooting my recommended updates went back down to 2.Again I noticed that my updates jumped back up, after I downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 8.1. I ran ccleaner, checked my registry and rebooted - they were gone again (back down to the same 2 I started with). I am not installing these updates, and am now wondering if I really should be installing them or not. Why are they appearing and then disappearing? How do I know if they are safe? Is it possible that a virus or hijacker could be creating these false updates. or am I being too cautious. I am definitely a bit suspect to lots of behavior on my computer now as I am recovering from a nasty virus that somehow took over my system while I was running Norton Security. I used to do automatic updates, but have now changed it to notify me. I am also running better security progams.

it isn't acting right, but I have been trying to install norton antivirus. She bought the package and has a 2 year subscription, and afterwards we ran live update. It then asks for an activation key, which we have from the email sent to her. When we click OK to tell it that we want to put it in, it does nothing. No matter how long you wait or how many times you click OK, the box just sits there. For this reason, we cant update her virus definitions or get norton to protect her computer. norton is not the only button that will not respond. Somehow the viewpoint toolbar was installed on her computer. When we try to uninstall the viewpoint toolbar or if I go to add/remove programs and try to uninstall it from there, it brings up a box that asks are you sure you want to uninstall viewpoint It does the same as the norton box; it will not respond, even if I click yes and wait

After the install it took forever to load, and when it did I get a warning that I have no virus protection. I removed Trend with it's own removal tool and installed AVG Free, I get the same thing, The resident shield and email won't start. I install Vipre and the same thing protection is turned off and won't turn on. I have cleaned the registry of all norton traces, avg and others. I have did a scan with viper while it was installed and found a few items that I cleaned. I'm at my wits end and have never seen this happen before.

So I done a clean install formatting my hard drive fully and starting from scratch. And to my fear I still could not access ANY antivirus sites still.
I had only installed AVG Free and Firefox. Even before I connected the net to the computer I put AVG on just to be safe and it still would not update.

I got in touch with microsoft and this what they want me to do, but to be honest I don't trust them I don't want to mess my system up, so would you please have a look at what they have sent me.
I installed Window XP upgrade and didn't realize that it would disable my Norton antivirus 2004. After installation, Windows informed me that Norton would have to be reinstalled. I tried reinstalling it, but couldn't until the disabled one was uninstalled. When I tried to uninstall it, there were some files that the uninstall program couldn't find, so the uninstall failed. I need to know how I can get the disabled one off my system so that I can reinstall Norton again.

I have done tried all the recovery tricks from here and MS website, done chkdsk /f & /r repeatedly over four days without using the PC in between, and all the other stuff from here and Microsoft. Bought an expensive Reg cleaner and run it repeatedly. No luck. No recently installed soft or hardware. New Dell desktop. 1 year of trouble-free life until this. I now boot from the recovery XP CD (it includes SP2) to try to reformat the whole shebang and it gets as far as loading setup files OK, then as usual tries to start load windows installation and ... blue screen. STOP error 0x0000007B (OXF78D2524 OXC0000034, OX00000000, OX00000000).
Decided to buy a new HDD and install XP on that. (3 weeks from Dell!) and in machine. Old one disconnected. Tried installing XP from disk. It stalls at exactly the same moment as before (loads up preliminary files, gets to ""starting Windows" and then the dreaded blue screen with the same error message as before. 0X0000007B (OXF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). So presumably not HD (although always good to have one). Have downloaded Memtest and run it for 24 hours. No RAM errors reported.
Basically my windows xp servicepack 2 doesn't fully install, it usually closes with an error saying it could not fully install.
When trying to install XP SP3, get an error about 10% of the way through saying that ftp.exe in use by another application..ftp.exe doesn't show up in Task Manager as a running process so something else must be using it without ftp.exe showing up in the list somehow.I get clean scans from Spysweeper, Adaware and Malwarebytes so I don't think this is because of a virus/trojan/malware.I've tried killing all non-essential processes and stopping all non-essential services after a reboot and after disabling all network connections but the issue persists.

Well after I couldn't get that working (but thats another story) now I can't get anything because NTLDR is missing.I have already tried quite a few things, I have run numerous checkdisks, tried doing repair installs, which didn't work, I've tried installing on a different partition, I've done basicly everything besides a low level format on the drive and reinstall then. I am trying to avoid trying this.
I keep getting an error 25099 unzipping core files failed when I try to install the latest java update. I can't find any java runtime on my pc. I am running xp sp3 on an e- machine t3504. I recently removed sun office and it apparently removed java as well.

After the drivers get loaded and says starting windows it goes to the BSOD error Stop 0x0000007B, I figure this to be a MBR virus or corrupted boot sector. So I wiped the disc with Boot and Nuke 2.2.6, showed no errors. Tried again with same result. Ran Disc repair with same result. NOT the XP disc for sure as I have installed in different systems with no problems. HDD was running Vista SP2 when problems started. Ran bootable virus scan and stated MBR errors. Different software packages report that the drive is fine but still cannot partition/format drive.

I am trying to install Service Pack 3 on a friend's laptop that is running XP Pro. It has SP2 installed on it. The error I get is: c:/windows/system32/ftp.exe is open or another application using it (or something like that). I ran the task manager and could not locate any running process or application that is obvious using ftp.exe.I did find the file in the system32 folder...but that's it. I have considered renaming ftp.exe something else temporarily but it says I don't have authority to do so or that is maybe already running. I am running another virus scan on it now. The computer has AVG 8.0 on it for anti-virus. I have run lavasoft's adaware too. I have also tried to install this in safe mode, but that didn't work either.
