Box Turns On Fine But My Monitor Remains Blank
Dec 3, 2008
when I power on my computer system, monitor and box, here is what happens. My box turns on fine but my monitor remains blank as it makes a click, click, click sound. Each click turns the green power light on and then off, on then off, for about 60-90 seconds. When the monitor finally responds and turns on I am at the boot page in Windows. Here is what it says: The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the default settings.

I started out having a trojan or a virus that kept me from being able to do much on my computer, and I was running VERY slow. So I tried doing a Restore point and that did not do, because my computer could not find a restore point it could work from. I had several, but I would get an error message saying I could not use that restore point. Anyway, I then decided to reformat it. After I did that, my monitor started acting up. It has NEVER done this before... It would be on, and I would be computing right along, and all of a sudden my monitor would just go black! Then it would completely log off. I would get a message saying there was no connection. It never did completely turn the computer off (like some errors usuallly do) it was JUST the monitor, but I could not get the monitor to come back on unless I turned the computer off myself and rebooted it. I did a reboot and it worked for about 30 minutes and then started doing the same thing all over again, but this time it would only work about 10 mintues then shut down the monitor. I would reboot and the same thing would happen over and over again.
I went to microsoft online and looked for the Windows XP downloads and decided to try and update anything I needed. It did all the updates and said I had something that was damaged and needed repaired so it fixed that problem and I tried it again after the reboot. Still nothing helped the problem. My DH first thought it may be the video card. He opened it up to check and found it was very dirty and dusty around the fans etc.so he cleaned it, hoping that may have been the problem and put it back together. I tried it again and got the same thing! NOW, it will work about 2 minutes before it turns itself off! So tonight he is going to try a different video card in it and see if that helps...if not he said it may be the motherboard. Do you have any other suggestions as to what may be causing this problem? I am at a loss myself.I have also ran my ZoneAlarm Suite, nothing picked up, McAffee, found nothing, AVG found nothing, I did a disk defrag and that did not help either. I uninstalled all the antivirus and antispyware and still did not help. I now have only the McAffee running on it. (By the way I did not have all the antivirus programs running at the same time, ever.)

My XP SP2 system is getting stuck after the monitor turns off for no activity. The keyboard and mouse will not get the login screen or desktop back. In fact the keyboard is "dead" - toggling CapsLock does not light/unlight the KB led.But the system is not hung. I can ping it from another system, and I can access shared folders over the network.I tried plugging in a USB mouse - got a lot of disk activity but still can not get system back.Only recovery is to power cycle.

I cannot figure this out. I turn on my computer, everything loads and runs like normal. The windows bar thing runs (im running SP2) and then when the actual GUI is about to come up the monitor turns off. The monitor says to check my connections... been there done that. Ive tried 3 different monitors and all do the same thing. The computer isn't going to sleep either because it wont wake up no matter what. Its got to be a program or virus something because i can start in safe mode. Ive run nortons to no avail, and with the latest update.

My computer is having some trouble. When I try to boot it up I get nothing from the monitor(LCD). This happened a while back and all I did was took the power cord to the monitor out, and plugged it back in. It worked like that for 2 months or so. Today he calls me and he is having the same problem. So again I unplugged the cord and replugged it back in. I got signal but it immediately went blank again. It will only work for 1 second. What could be causing this do you think? I hooked up two other monitors to his computer also. One of them (older one not sure if it works 100%, wouldn't see why not) would BOOT up fine, then once you got to login it would go black, and do exactly what the LCD did. I could unplug it plug it back in for some video. Then I brought over my monitor. It works 100% and I didn't get any video at all with it. I tried other power cords/outlets etc. What do you guys think it could be?

My friend's computer monitor loses signal about 75% through the "Installing Devices" phase of the Windows XP Professional installation. Article 311839 in Microsoft's support site has a solution, but it didn't really work at all.

Whenever I try to shutdown my computer or restart nothing happens. It just stays at my desktop. If I try to log off or switch users I get a black screen and a small message window saying with the title of, "Parser Message" then in the window it says, "Value creation failed" at line 40" (with the quotation in the middle). The only way I can turn the computer off is by holding the power button. When I turn the computer on I get the same message and click ok a couple of times then I get to a log on screen where you have to type in a user and password. Normally I just click the user's name. This started this morning when I left the computer on (accidentally) and showered, when I came back my screen saver was on and I moved my mouse and I had the message. I tried going into safe mode and doingsystem restore but that didn't work and I couldn't shutdown from safe mode. When I eventually log on everything works normally. Please help me before I break my computer.

The computer has sluggish and aggravating moments. Frequently, Internet Explorer Windows get hung-up, and will not close or open. Tabs get stuck and won't change. Boot-up time seems slow. Connection tests indicate speed is optimal, but IE remains slow and clunky. A HJT scan has been performed. I may correct any issues. Also, if there is any fat to be trimmed, oo.

After a recent win xp pro sp2 install, a system idle process always remains on. It doesn't take more than 16kb usually, so is not a big problem but it does manage to keep my PC's busy light flickering constantly! It is really annoying, but it did not come with the install either, it started a little after it. In my opinion, it was not triggered by any kind of a software or program, but is another one of those "unfortunate mistakes" that windows keeps us entertained with. I probably could fix it with a windows wash, but I was wondering if anyone has any other ideas. My CPU is 700 mhz, celeron B (or the old one, from 97). I have enough disk space, ~ 100gigs, so I am sure it has nothing to do with the page file either.

browsing web sites, and right before my eyes (not even a screen flicker) the display widens, while the resolution remains the same; looks like my monitor needs to be a few inches wider on each side to fit it all. "That's weird," I thought, and went and tried to fix the display as per usual...no dice. Reboot, no dice. While rebooting, I noted that the startup BIOS info was wide too, and not fitting on the screen...I booted up Ubuntu Linux just to see, and it works just fine...so

This is SIMILAR to several posts I've seen, but different in a subtle way. I have no desktop icons and no wallpaper on one of my computers, but I have the start toolbar and tray icons, and I have access to task manager and all my programs. However, when I right click on the desktop and click arrange icons all the options are grayed out. Also, I cannot change the wallpaper - it remains solid blue (or any other color) no matter what I try. Neither picture wallpapers nor tiled wallpapers appear. I've included the hijack-this log below.

At completely random intervals(e.g. 2 minutes, 3 hours, sometime during the day/night), the computer 'locks me out' - the screen remains visible but the mouse is 'frozen', the keyboard will not function, any discs in their slots will not release. The system will restart with no apparent problem until the next lock out.I've had a systems check done at the local shop and they are fairly certain that the hardware is not causing the problem.

When Windows adds a new monitor using the standard driver, can it detect the aspect ratio? When I hooked up mine, all the resolution choice were for 4:3 monitors. There were no widescreen options. It should choose the monitor's native resolution on its own if the monitor is an LCD.

Now we have a new tower to go with exisiting 24" monitor. My problem is I can not get a old standard VGA monitor to work with the old system listed above. When I plug in the the VGA monitor plug in the VGA outlet in the old computer I get no signal to the monitor. What do I need to do with drivers or other wise to get the old computer back to being able to be used with the old VGA monitor?

After a few days of work, the user cannot open new windows explorer or other application windows. Nothing happens if she tries to. If she closes one window, then she's able to open a new one. The "allowed" number of opened windows varies from time to time, sometimes being as low as 4, but sometimes around 10 to 12. The performance tab in the task manager is completely blank (see screenshot). Some Windows explorer menu bars sometimes are blank, and a windows logo appear instead of the menus (see screenshots).
Rebooting fixes the problem, but it comes back a few days later. The laptop is part of a domain, running generally the same applications as other desktops and laptops in the domain, running the same antivirus, etc. The virus definitions are up to date, and a full scan has been run. Even stranger is the fact that when it happens, Windows XP doesn't even seem to be unstable, nor does it crash in any way. Just seems as if there was a limit on the number of processes or handles or threads allowed to run.
Laptop: IBM Lenovo Thinkpad (model 63716NF)
CPU: Core 2 @ 1,8Ghz
RAM: 2 gb
OS: Windows XP sp3.
Swap file: initially set to 2046 mb and max is set at 4092 mb
Processor scheduling and Memory usage are both set to "Programs"
I have been searching the web for solutions but cannot find any forum post describing the same problem. Thank you for any help.

I replace my old LCD monitors (Dell 1905s) with new acer P223w's. I have a dual monitor display.I power off both monitors with one switch that cuts off the power. When I do this however, Windows makes the sound like a device has been disconnected and it messes up my monitor settings. This is very annoying and it didn't happen with my other monitors nor does it happen on my other Windows XP system with different monitors. It's like Windows is trying to be "smart" by thinking the monitor is gone. I do not want Windows to care if the monitor is powered off.
