Desktop Icons - Wallpaper Remains Solid Blue
May 21, 2007
This is SIMILAR to several posts I've seen, but different in a subtle way. I have no desktop icons and no wallpaper on one of my computers, but I have the start toolbar and tray icons, and I have access to task manager and all my programs. However, when I right click on the desktop and click arrange icons all the options are grayed out. Also, I cannot change the wallpaper - it remains solid blue (or any other color) no matter what I try. Neither picture wallpapers nor tiled wallpapers appear. I've included the hijack-this log below.

This may seem trivial, but it's bugging me. I have a windows XP and i have the windows classic theme. Every time I put a picture as my wallpaper the color around the words under my icons doesn't blend in with the picture but stays a solid color, so there's like little boxes of blue of white. How do I make those icon words blend in with the picture?

Turned on other computer this morning. The desktop wallpaper showed. There were no icons or taskbar. I right click on the desktop and nothing happens. I can do a ctrl+alt+del and access the task manager but have no idea on how to restore my desktop. When I startup in safe mode all I get is a black screen.

I have perplexing problem. Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows Xp Home. SP2. I have no icons on desktop and cannot load any background wallpaper through display properties. They background choices are listed but cannot be selected. I do have icons when running in safe mode. This system was infected with several viruses and lots of spy/adware. Had alot of trouble removing Startpagedu.dll and New Poly Win32 trojans. I am wondering if I missed something. Ran Spybot, Adaware, Webroot Spysweeper, eScan Antivirus Toolkit, Norton Antivirus, Hijack This, CWShredder, AboutBuster, Ewido Security Suite. All of these were ran in safe mode. I also deleted all tempfiles and made sure no rogue services were running. I am lost about what to do next.

No taskbar no icons just desktop wallpaper on a Dell Precision 490 running XP Pro SP2. I had a work-around when this happened, I hit ctl-alt-del, ran task manager then started explorer.exe and all would be well. At first this problem was intermittent but now it's every time I boot. Also when booting into Safe Mode. Now even running explorer.exe won't bring up taskbar or icons. I've run Symantac and found no virus.

i'm running XP home/SP2, compaq presario 2.53 GHZ 1.5 GB RAM, this pc is not even 2 years old.My problem, sometimes when I boot up, my taskbar is completly blue, no "start" icon, no clock. PC is non responsive to anything.I have to do a hard shutdown. I have ran all my security programs, AV, spyware etc, and nothing shows up.A month or so ago, I did both, a destructive and a non destructive recovery, only to have the problem show up again.I have not added any new software since this problem first started. This week the pc's been doin pretty good, think I'm 5 days straight without this happening.

Yesterday I got onto my computer which was already on everything seeming fine, and I clicked on internet explorer to check my email then the window locked up or something and then my taskbar vanished. Then I closed the window out and my icons were gone. So I restarted my comp and now its just wallpaper. No icons or taskbar. Ive seen a few other posts on a problem like mine and tried a few of the fixes they said but none worked.
I've tried a system restore to I beleive a week earlier, some shellfix download from ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/shellfix.reg, hitting f8 and doing a boot to when settings worked(sorry cant think of whats its actually called) and a couple other things I believe. I noticed alot of times a request for a hijackthis file is asked for so I went ahead and got that and will post. Also Im positive I have the aurora virus cuz I get all the popups that say aurora on there and I havent been able to get rid of it

When I turn on my computer and click on "user 1" on the start up window, it takes unusually long to load, and once it does all I see is my wallpaper. No start menu, no desktop icons, nothing. I can ctrl-alt-delete and open programs by doing "run new task" and selecting them, and everything runs fine

The last thing I want ANYONE to see is My Pictures. Why is this damn thing offering THAT place as first choice for dektop wallpapers? I pointed it (browsed to) Windows/Web/Wallpapers but it STILL insists on my pictures included there! And there is no obvious, clear cut way to change it, I have to google all over the place to find the damn answer! Pure wasted time. to remove that place and prevent it from ever showing up as a first choice for wallpapers?

About a week ago windows told me that it had "detected spyware" so began installing antispyware software. After this had completed, and I was told that I needed to spend the $24 to buy the software to rid me of all the various nasties the internet supplies, i deleted the software and had developed the problem of not being able to see my wallpaper. Since looking round I've found that it's now down the active desktop being disabled somewhere along the line, without my knowledge. Having gone through the largely useless and time consuming "help" that is given on the Microsoft help section, I've now discovered that, although i do have active desktop on me computer, i have no way of getting to it, turning it on, or even finding any trace of it. Can anyone help, as my desktop is now just blue with icons.

I am wondering if it is possible to find the location of where your wallpaper pic is temporarily stored while it is your current wallpaper. The reason I ask is because I thought I saved the pic before I made it my wallpaper, but I cannot locate the file. Also, is there a way to find out the name of the file? Then I could do a search, but as it is, Desktop properties just labels it "Internet explorer wallpaper

On my desktop the icons have picked up a blue box with >>. Some have a white box with a little right leaning arrow.Note: the system has slowed down. I was using Comcasts free McaVee and then got a notice that my free subscription has expired. Comcast now provided Norton for free, so I went there and downloaded that virus software. While de bugging I have cleaned errors uncovered by CheckIt Register Cleaner program and Skybot. On booting it takes it's time. The McaVee burped when I reset to a earlier starting point (one day).running standard PC with XP. I have updated windows. I don't have KB977165. I see from below this is incorrect. I do have this pill???? I am a novice (but old) user, easily confused.

I'm pretty sure the title is self explainatory. I went to sleep last night with the computer on and when I woke up this morning the blue screen was there. I restarted and when Windows loaded the taskbar and the desktop icons were missing. It's been like this all day. I've done System Restores and uninstalled recent things that I've installed.

I have no icons or taskbar at start up merely the wallpaper and the mouse pointer. I can get to safe mode but appear not to be able to restore even with many restore points. I would prefer not to have to re-install XP - can this be fixed if so how?

The computer in question is running Windows XP Pro, SP1. It is not attached to the internet, and any documents not created on the computer are scanned on a different computer first for viruses, so HOPEFULLY that means this is not a virus. In addition, the same thing happened last year, and I did a complete re-install exactly a year ago to the day. We have WordPerfect Office 12, Lotus Organizer, and Microsoft Office XP Standard loaded. This is an IBM NetVista 6350 computer.
Logging on brings me to the screen that shows my wallpaper and the cursor. However, there are no icons, no start button, and no task bar. Right clicking does not produce anything. Control-Alt-Delete to bring up the task manager shows that explorer. exe has not loaded.I have tried starting in Safe Mode and logged in under the Administrator Account. That brings up a black screen with Safe Mode noted in the corners, but no other information, so it appears to be a problem that is not prejudiced to a certain user login.

I was wondering if there is a way to point the Background page (Right click>Properties>Desktop) to another folder? The folder it is currently showing has pictures in it that I don't want set as a background, but there is another folder I have which I do want to be used. Edit:: I'm guessing there is just some .ini file somewhere that I need to alter, but I don't know where to start looking.

All of a sudden yesterday morning when I right clicked on my desktop and un-checked Show Desktop Icons (to take a print screen for my friend) the problem started. This worked fine, I did the print screen and saved it in paint no problem. But when I right clicked again and then chose Show Desktop Icons, they came back, but my wallpaper disappeared. I tried several ways to get it back

I had a desktop highjacker earlier this year, that is originally what actually brought me to TSG forums. I stopped the hijacking but until just now I did not notice I can't change my wallpaper in display properties and all that I can access is the color backgrounds. I try to click on "background" "browse" and "posistion" and can't,The text are gray not black? I also can't scroll through the wallpaper selections! What can I do to change this so that these properties are accessable and adjust able again?

1) I have no idea how this happened, but when I click on "Display Properties" to change the desktop wallpaper, there are 4 tabs, and only one is related to lthe desktop display. It is the 'Themes" tab. There is no ""Desktop" tab so that I can select a .bmp file to use as my new wallpaper display.
2) While I'm at it, could someone please tell me where and what folder Windows uses for the screensaver files?

I can change the desktop wallpaper background to a personal pic, by using the browse button. no problem, but it won't keep the pic in the list of available backgrounds. it will keep the background i choose until i want to change it, but as soon as i switch, that pic disappears and if i want to change back, i have to use the browse button all over again. running xp home not a major problem, but annoying.if there is a quick fix i can't find it.
