i'm running on Windows XP 512mb Pent 4.I turned on my computer and it looks likes i'm running my computer in a better version of safe mode. everything comes up just fine except for pictures, everything, my desktop... digital camera images, everything. I looked at my display settings, and everything is still the same.
I heard a computer show today where the host was saying you should restart XP after three days or so because it slows down, gets buggy, ect. Yet I had heard it said you could leave in on for weeks or months.... which is correct?
I have windows XP and there are a few things that are starting to get on my nerves. First, everytime I start the computer the Color Quality goes from 32 bit to 16 bit for no apparent reason. Second, my cat walked on my keyboard and now everytime I start up the computer the Magnifier comes up. Neither of these things get in the way of using anything. They're just annoying and I can't figure out how to fix them.
Have 2 personal computer's both have XP SP2 using eTrust AZ Armor with it's FW being a rebadged ZoneAlarm or so I've been told. I've checked the settings on each personal computer FW, and they appear to be the same. Also, on each personal computer in Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Multimedia, Show Pictures is selected. There is a car forum that we like and some of the members post image attachments, but from one personal computer the images cannot be viewed. Images are able to be viewed that are posted directly into the message, but the ones with attachments show up as Attached Thumbnails with a blank rectangular box below. On the other personal computer, on the exact same posting I see Attached Images and in the rectangular box are .jpg links that I can open.Any suggestions as to what settings need to be changed to be able to view them from both personal computer's?
One day I turned on my computer, only to find the blue screen of death. It said something about something needed to boot up not being found. I started looking for my XP reinstallation CD, and managed to find it (the first time I've ever found anything when I really needed it). However, as I was following the instructions, I kept getting messages popping up saying that files couldn't be installed (there were at least 40 of them). I had no choice but to press the "continue" button, but I figured that it couldn't be too important.
Everything seemed to be going fine, but then I realized that things didn't seem to work the same. I lost the newest edition of WMP, but that was fine with me. However, I also lost SP2, and I can't seem to get it back. In fact, NONE of my automatic updates are downloading. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened or how to rectify the situation?
I came home today and found my computer had turned from the sleek silver windows xp theme into the windows classic version. I also have no sound and in the control panel it isn't picking up any audio devices. I cant change the theme back to windows xp in properties either it says im using Windows XP (modified). PLEASE HELP ME! All i know is that the power went out at some point today (about 7 hours ago)
Windows firewall Just like magic, much of the text on my computer turned from black to blue. For example, all the text I've typed in to label my photos is now all blue, it was black when I originally typed it. All the text I typed in under my document files had turned to blue as well. Not all the text on the computer has turned to blue, just mostly in documents and photos. I have no idea how this happened. Does anybody know how I can change it back to the original color, black. I really have tried everything I can think of and so far nothing works.
I just upgraded to x64 version from 32 bit XP. But to my disappointment, the display properties only show up to 32 bit. Where is the 64 bit option? Here is the hardware I have: I had thought that while playing games, wherever there would be unmixed colors, they would now be mixed properly, like steam coming in dark areas in a game, or too many colors not fading into each other properly. But looks like I would need to do with the 32 bit only I guess.
I have a Lexmark 5150 all-in-one printer. I can't seem to save my settings.I go to quick print under Preferences and click Save Settings, and then enter that setting. It prints at that setting. But after the printing job is done and I have closed the program,I find that the next time I open the program and go to preferences, the Quality/Print setting has reverted to normal.I'd like it to stay at quick print until I change it.
Have rebuilt my desktop, new mobo, 160G HD, 1G Ram. Mobo is a fujitsu that is listed on the HCI, but needs external video card - using Geforce. Win XP-SP2 from Tiger/OEM version. Did the install/format Hd, install finishes, restarts and does a particial boot -- Win XP main screen comes on, then screen flashes over to a poor quality XP main screen, and halts. Restart in Safe Mode, boot starts but when main screen should appear, horiz. lines and blue text type symbols, as if Geforce video card not being functional.
While transferring video clips from my digital camera to my computer, the media players show images upside down. There is no problem when transferring to other computers.

My Windows Firewall automatically turns off every time i reboot. Is this because Norton Antivirus has its own internal firewall? If it is because of Norton, is it ok to leave the Windows Firewall turned off? I'm concerned that my computer isn't adequately secured.
I continually have my norton Internet Security popping up alerting me that my firewall is turned off. What is causing this to turn off?How can I prevent the windows firewall from turning off? Is Norton running a Firewall in addition to the windows firewall?
I am running outlook express in Windows XP SP2. Quite frequently images in emails are replaced by a large box with a small red x in the upper left corner. I have unchecked the appropriate box in the security tab under Options' in the 'Tools' pull down menue of Outlook Express. I still can not get certain images. It would seem that most often this problem occuts in email that has been forwarded to me.
everything on the desktop is turned upside down, but it seems to be operating in the same manner. The mouse cursor moves in the opposite direction to which I direct it. My laptop is an Acer TravelMate 254LC_DT.
"you have JavaScript turned off " this message turned up once. I get pictures in the email or in programs and I get a big white squre with a little stamp in the upper left corner. is there some way to get the picture? I do not know what javascript is or how to turn it on.
Just recently every time i boot up or reboot, my windows firewall is turned off. I get the balloon in the bottom right of my screen to fix it, which i do....no problem! But when i boot up again, it switched off?

Does anyone know why mine is turning OFF when I exit IE 8? Is that somethihg that happens with notebooks?
Any suggestions on how to keep "SmartScreen Filter" always turned ON?

MacAfee automatically updated and said it needed to restart. So I hit restart as nothing was running at the time. When the computer tried to restart it took FOREVER, at least 5 minutes. When it finally did come up, none of the links work. I treid to get into System Restore, it said System Restore had been turned off. News to me I never turn System Restore off. No access to the internet. Go to printers it shows no printers installed. Most programs, if you try to run them they either don't open, or open and close abruptly, or with McAfee it opens with nothing inside the box. Or if you try to do something like turn the System Restore on, the program stops responding. I actually did a registry edit to turn it on, but it still won't let me set a new restore point, and it says there are no old restore points. Basically the computer is totally unusable. So now I boot in SAFE MODE. Doesn't do much for me but allows me to look around. So I reboot in SAFE MODE Directory Services which says the drive is clean and the computer now works great in this Directory Services mode.
Just experienced a very strange situation. We have several hundred XP clients on an NT Domain. We disable windows firewall. Over the weekend we upgraded our NT 4 Domain to Windows 2003 Mixed Mode Active Directory. We are now seeing today and yesterday some machines have the windows firewall enabled. We discoverd the problem due to an older legacy application we have had stopped working. The application was working yesterday (2 days after the upgrade) but today it was not. The machines experiencing the problem are located in seperate office and seperate departments. so far we have seen only about 15 with the firewall enabled. As we just upgraded we dont have any GPO's in place that would enable this. We dont have any other automated customization tools that were configured to do this either. Is there any log file or any way to determine when/by who the firewall was enabled. The users of the machines dont have admin rights so we know it was not them.
In my Local Area Connection Properties, I turned off the Internet Connection Firewall, but I have symptoms of it being on, like, unable to host Warcraft 3 games, slow download speeds, etc etc, and even an error that say it is on while I'm patching World of Warcraft, is there a way to fix this?
my security center (from control panel firewall) says that the firewall isn't turned on (in fact, it is currently turned off)and i have no way of clicking on the "on" option because the screen is basically unchangeable.
Any way to get rid of those annoying tool tip type balloons that pop-up to tell me i'm connected, my firewall isn't turned on or i have no virus software? i've looked everywhere on both my machines one xp home and the other xp pro.
