I have a Sony Viao that is almost 3 years old. It takes forever to boot and forever to access sites. I have scanned w/AVG, run Ad-aware, cleaned and de-fragmented. I'm sure I have too much that was pre-loaded for start up, but I don't know what I can safely remove and still have everything that I need function. Rob
View 14 RepliesI've got an old msi K7N2G-L board/computer and it's got an old WD1200JB installed and running xp. The problem is that it boots and runs slow as molasses, I'm talking like 10 mins to get it to the log in screen and opening apps takes a good 2-3mins before opening too. If I run a defrag on the drive, things temp speed back up to normal, but as soon as I reboot, it's slow again. If I run the defrag again, everything's cool and speeds go back to normal.So I'm guessing that there's some HD corruption on this drive (at least 5yrs old) and it keeps writing system files to the bad sections of this old HD when it's booting. I've run various fdisks, but none of them reveal any errors. (I should mention that I'm diligently proactive on Antivirus', firewall and Spyware practices, so that's definitely not an option relating to the old drive's slowness.) I've scanned with Avira, Nod32, Kaspersky, Trojansuperantispyware, and checked hijack this entries, there's nothing detected or unusual. Of course, I don't have all of these installed at once.I decided to try and swap the drive out and reinstall xp on this system using a newer WD3200 drive (that I use as a storage drive on one of my other computers.) I run the xp installer, successfully quick format the 3200 partition to NTFS, and everything proceeds fine and fast(keep in mind the 3200 drive was used to store data on my newer comp and was already formatted to ntfs.) Unfortunately, after it successfully finishes the initial install, it gives me the 15 second reboot warning. Okay, I let it reboot, but instead of continuing the install after the reboot, the system hangs on "Verifying DMI Pool Data" and that's it. Nothing happens and I am unable to finish the installation. I tried this like 10 times with 2 different XP home's and I keep getting the same problem. When I go into Bios, the drive is recognized as a 3200/automatic settings? I can't see why xp installs fine on the old WD1200, but not on the WD3200.

After a while, I got recovery discs from IBM and I have created startup and ThinkVantage discs.I have restored my IBM to factory-condition few times before, but now I want to format it to the ground level to get rid of some files which have been piled up in the reserved-preinstalled sector of the hard drive. I just believe that it make my IBM even more fresh than "usual restoration".My question is: can I format my IBM from DOS environment by using startup disc and still use the restoration/recovery discs after that, to install XP and acompanying programs? Is there any body who have done it on any other PC brands; because I think that it can be the same for other makes.

I got my vaio about 2 years ago, it was second hand, so came with no CDs. nIt has been running fine with no problems until this morning.It is constantly restarting, with a blue screen that flashes up momentarily.I saw something that someone mentioned about it being to do with the wireless, so I've switched that off, and it has stopped restarting. As soon as I switch it back on though, it goes back in to constantly restarting.I can't even seem to get into the menu to start with safe mode. I've tried to restore the system to when it was working fine, but this hasn't helped.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to find out what is wrong with my computer. I see this error: No Operating System Found when I try to boot up. It was gradual. My computer blue screened while I wasn't looking and rebooted itself. I then started up in safe mode and ran Adaware. Found and got rid of some spyware stuff. Rebooting and ran it again. It blue screened in the middle of the second run and I saw this message: kernal_data_inpage_error. Further down the screen was win32k.sys- Address and "stop: C00021a unknown hard error" As I am currently out of the country working in the Netherlands, I would like to have an idea of what the problem could be before I go visit a repair shop. The hope is that I reduce the chances of being taken advantage of.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't like XP and, after checking out the Sony support and seeing that there were drivers for W2K I installed that instead. That was the start of things. Half the drivers didn't work, including the jog dial, hotkeys, power panel and internal WAN. So I did a system restore with the CDs and ended up back at XP where everything worked again- except for the wireless. It gives the dreaded "this device cannot start - code 10" and an exclamation mark in device manager. There's also a unknown device that keeps appearing called "network controller" which the system can't find any software for. There's a fix on the Sony site here for it which allows me to uninstall it but it returns after every boot.

I've been tracking down solutions for nearly a week and they generally involve uninstalling drivers or disabling devices which might be conflicting. None of this works for me. Before I originally reverted to W2K I copied all of the driver files off XP as a precaution. I have tried these, I have tried Sony's original ones. I have downloaded and installed every upgrade from the support site - TWICE.

Nothing makes the wireless work. It is an ORiNOCO Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card or a Sony PCWA-C100 Wireless PC Card, if you prefer, they are the saem thing. Anyway, I have rebooted so many times I'm seeing XP progress bars in my sleep! I have even tried tracking down other manufacturer's software and drivers and trying that. I've seen it mentioned that this problem is something to do with IRQ settings and the bios but I'm hesitant to go near that. I can't understand why its being such a problem. I bought a Sony because I thought they were good.
So I have a Sony Vaio PCG-VX88, and the hard drive has been clicking and the computer has just been acting weird. I can no longer start photoshop, when I ran Windows Spyware check and began deleteing the files it started clicking and after restarting I can't get it back to normal state like I could before. When I started it up it says "no opperating system found" (happend twice) then finally after the 3rd try goes and starts up, the last time I tried it did a check on the file system of the C: drive, will a reformat help Or is it a hardware thing

It continually blue screened during the very beginning of the install process. So, I decided to remove vista. I could not get vista to uninstall so I finally ran an older bootable windows like 98 or me which got me to dos. In dos I deleted and reset partitions. I did not format as format was not on the disk I used. Now, with a fresh hard drive I figured that xp would install but it won't. The computer boots by cd but again it continually blue screens at the beginning of the install process b/f it asks any questions but after loading drivers.

Now, when I boot up the laptop, it shows the BOIS icons and the Windows XP splash screen, but when it should show the logon screen (I have two user accounts on the box) the monitor goes blank. I know the laptop is still running because after a couple of minutes the screen saver music starts to play, so it must be a monitor-specific issue.I've gone into setup and reset the boot sequence to no effect, took out the battery and rebooted to no effect and now am at the end of my limited hardware diagnostic abilities.

Before the reinstall, I managed to track down this page on the Sony Asia website (http://www.sony-asia.com/support/dow...subpage=detail), and downloaded all of the listed drivers onto a memory stick. Having formatted the disk and installed Windows, I installed the drivers in the order listed on the website. They all worked perfectly, except for the Realtek audio driver.No sound was played by the computer, and when viewing the sound preferences under the Control Panel, I was informed that there is No Audio Device.

The power lights flash, it checks the CD-RW drive, and then remains on with the main power light on and the fan on, but the screen remains black and nothing else happens. Windows XP doesn't load. No Sony logo, no "Operating system not found," nothing. It's like it's had a lobotomy.I haven't installed anything new, and the notebook has just been sitting around unplugged for a few days. The last thing I used it for was to burn a CD with Windows Media Player. The only change I can think of is that my USB tablet isn't plugged in.

I recieved the following message after a forced restart after windows updates were installed: "We are sorry for any inconvenience but Windows was unable to start successfully" My options are to start in Safe Mode , Last known config or normal. Safe Mode is the only thing that works. Also System Restore would not work Also System Recovery from Sony Vaio Recovery Wizard would not work

I understand that there is a way to eliminate items in the start-up file but having been to the site, I cannot determine which items to delete without messing up my system. Problem was the onboard video failed replaced it with a video card from another system (riva TNT) and bought some memory system wouldn't boot, determined that the memory was bad Now the system booted but win2K wouldn't work. No problem I have XP now. After multiple error during the xp install I finally got through it.only the computer will only boot in safe mode. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

As the boot begins, it takes you to a screen that says, :"if a previous start up attempt was inturrupted due to a power failure, then choose Start Windows Normally". We follow the directions, takes us the Window XP screen trying to boot it up and then takes us to the Gateway screen and then back to the screen where it asks the same question again.The cycles continues without any other options.

Run AVG free, windows defender, threatfire, spybot.I am on a cable hookup with a linksys BEFSR41 router. Turn off the computer each night.Right now I am using a laptop connected to the router to access the internet. the desktop would take a long time to start up applications but when they did start up things ran ok. This morning, I power up and the computer will go thru the speed start up list but will not start up anything from the start menu, just get the hour glass. On start alt delete, it says 99 percent system idle. I forgot how to get to that menu but I remember that I could check and uncheck which things would start up, etc. The reason for this is because everytime I start windows, it tries to load my scanning software which I don't need started anymore due to the scanner not being connected at all anymore, and the un installation not going as properly as it should of.. but it just bugs me that it tries to connect to the scanner (with about 3-4 attempts) when Windows starts so this is my best option.

It makes a repetitious sound like the hard drive is trying to start but can't and will continue to do so indefinately or until it boots. So I assumed it was a hdd issue, however trying the hd in another laptop worked fine and an alternate hd in my Compaq has the same problem. It does start up occasionally, although it usually freezes half way through booting up, but can occasionally work upto half an hour.
