Not Responding - Start Bar - Task Manager Doesn't Show Up
Oct 2, 2010I have Winodws XP on a Compaq nc6120. I opened my laptop today to get it working and clicked on Google Chrome's shortcut, and nothing happened. The hourglass cursor came up and it stayed that way for about a half hour, then I tried to turn it off and back on the same thing keeps happening. I have also tried other programs. The task manager doesn't show up and the start bar does not even respond. I ran an HDD self-test and it said that all tests were successful. I use Avast Anti-Virus Free, and tried to download Comodo, but something went wrong, this was the day before theses issues started happening. I'm not very intelligent when it comes to 'under-the-hood' problems with computers, so I have no idea what could be happening.

Aug 6, 2005Sometimes when WinXP SP2 starts not all the start up icons show, but the programs are running. However, there is no access. I reboot and there they are. Once in a while a program will not start generally it is SpySweeper or PowerPanel. Just started recently. System has been swept with SpySweeper, Adaware Pro SE, SpyHunter, and Norton AV 2005.

May 1, 2005I get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.

Nov 21, 2008Presario v6000 with windows XP professional. When I try to start windows I get a blue screen with white text stating that window terminated unexpectedly. Then it shuts down and attempts to reboot with the same result. I ordered a recovery disk from HP. when I attemted to install the; I received an error message stating the software does not support this system. I call HP and they claim it's a virus or a computer issue. How do I process to get my system working again? or did HP send the wrong disk?

Sep 2, 2009so I was up late working on the computer and then went to bed left it on and woke up to a stright black screen and the mouse cursor. I shut the power off and turned it back on and Logged in and only my background and mouse curser would show up.Can't right click, can't boot into safe mode, tryed to boot useing last known good settings, tried to log in as different user. When I log in I can still access the public files from a different computer and I can ping the computer. I can log in with remote desktop connection, but still no start menu or icons or anything. Yesterday AVG did find a virus and I was able to heal the infection. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition. Right now I am goign to try and boot into Slax OS so I can see if any files were modifyed in the windows folder and system/system32, Dunno if this will tell me anything but its a start.

Jun 26, 2010I am seeing a number of problems related to windows explorer:Explorer won't start from the desktop icon. Selecting it from Accessories simply returns you to the desktop. My desktop is messed up. It displays a background plus 3 items in the column down the left side - "System Tasks", "Other Places", and "Details". Previously it was just a desktop with icons. I moved the contents of "My Documents" from my "C" drive to the E drive (different partition) in case the partition was failing, but yesterday the E version of MY Documents disappeared. I'd like to get these back. Before the folder disappeared, I would open it and see a treeview of all the subfolders. Immediately afterwards, starting at the top of the tree, the "+" would all disappear, just leaving folders. Also, some of the folders were white, not yellow. I suspect the situation is a combination of screwed up privileges and registry problems, but I'm not sure where to start.

Aug 17, 2007Now I have a new problem...I can't click on my desktop icon to start Windows Live Messenger. I can't even right click-->Open the program. The icon appears on my task bar, as if it was running, but I know it is not. I've of late had this same problem with other programs, so I know it's not just Windows Messenger. Sep 15, 2005I understand how to make Office applications always show full menus instead of collapse to only show the most recently used, but I want to do that same thing in my Start button. I have Windows XP Professional, but I have it configured in Start Menu Properties to use the Classic Start Menu. So when I click Start, then hover over Programs, it pops out the side menu, and that side menu always only shows the two or three folders or solo icons I've used recently. That is sooo annoying.
