Iam currently on hp windows xp home edition. The video adapter failed on my motherboard. I have replaced it with a 16mb video card and changed the bios to the agp setting for the adapter. I still can not get the start menu to show up.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have lost my start menu I also have lost the bottom task bar. In addition the views have all changed on the tool bars. For example, on the internet explorer tool bar, the icons are on top of each other or otherwise unaccessible. Several programs no longer work and I get error messages as follows "The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect..." I hit control-alt-delete, nothing happens.
I went to Housecall and ran a virus scan and nothing showed up. I had previously installed (many months ago) SpyBot S&D. As noted above, this is one of the programs that will not run and I get the error message. I tried to uninstall this program and then reinstall it. After downloading the program, I still got the above error message that the application configuration is incorrect.
I tried to start in safe mode. Although I cannot get to system configuration utility, I was able to get to safe mode by hitting F8 as the computer was starting. I selected safe mode and then selected Windows XP as the operating system. The next screen had the words safe mode in each corner and a Log On window in the middle.
so I was up late working on the computer and then went to bed left it on and woke up to a stright black screen and the mouse cursor. I shut the power off and turned it back on and Logged in and only my background and mouse curser would show up.Can't right click, can't boot into safe mode, tryed to boot useing last known good settings, tried to log in as different user. When I log in I can still access the public files from a different computer and I can ping the computer. I can log in with remote desktop connection, but still no start menu or icons or anything. Yesterday AVG did find a virus and I was able to heal the infection. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition. Right now I am goign to try and boot into Slax OS so I can see if any files were modifyed in the windows folder and system/system32, Dunno if this will tell me anything but its a start.
View 8 Replies View Relatedonce the on button was pushed, it came up with the BIOS screen asking for the password.I removed the CMOS battery, which allowed me to change the Password so I can get onto BIOS now. However, when I boot now it just comes up with the BIOS screen.I set HD to boot first, aswell as setting the clock and date. I then ask it to save and quit, after which it shut's down, and reboots, only, BIOS keeps coming up. And I need to get this sorted asap
View 14 Replies View RelatedI understand how to make Office applications always show full menus instead of collapse to only show the most recently used, but I want to do that same thing in my Start button. I have Windows XP Professional, but I have it configured in Start Menu Properties to use the Classic Start Menu. So when I click Start, then hover over Programs, it pops out the side menu, and that side menu always only shows the two or three folders or solo icons I've used recently. That is sooo annoying.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis all started when my computer was shutting down at random times when I was in windows...at first I thought it was my CPU because it was just shutting down when I was playing games... but I no longer think this because it started shutting down when I was just in windows.Anyway so my friend and I started working on it...we thought it was the mild overclock we put on a few weeks earlier. However, my temps were normal and it passed the stress tests we did on it through the BIOS...So we changed the settings back to stock. No luck.Problem not solved. In fact, now we can't stay in windows for more than a couple seconds before it re-boots.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP/SP2 a newish computer and some things changed from how it used to be.From the *Start* Button, there is the further button *Programs*. This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 on two separate bootable hard drives in my Dell XPS B1000r. I have my 80 GB �main� hard drive and a 40 GB �extra� hard drive. I mainly boot from my �main� 80 GB hard drive, and that�s the drive that won�t boot after I changed the drive letter.
I wanted to rename the Drive letters associated with each of these hard drives. I was able to change the �extra� hard drive using the Disk Management option. I was not able to change the letter of my �main� hard drive, because I booted from it. I used Regedit to change the boot drive letter, based on the Microsoft Help & Support article:

I had put my pc off with the on/off button, because I was in a hurry. Later when I tried to open it, it shows the BIOS screen and than nothing happens it just turns black and thats it. And it goes off when I put my finger slowly on the on/off button.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.
