I tried cleaning a family computer that has been giving us problems for a long time.I finally got rid of the virus that kept causing problems.At least I thought I did.Now whenever I boot up the start menu does not show up.

View 6 Replies View Relatedso I was up late working on the computer and then went to bed left it on and woke up to a stright black screen and the mouse cursor. I shut the power off and turned it back on and Logged in and only my background and mouse curser would show up.Can't right click, can't boot into safe mode, tryed to boot useing last known good settings, tried to log in as different user. When I log in I can still access the public files from a different computer and I can ping the computer. I can log in with remote desktop connection, but still no start menu or icons or anything. Yesterday AVG did find a virus and I was able to heal the infection. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition. Right now I am goign to try and boot into Slax OS so I can see if any files were modifyed in the windows folder and system/system32, Dunno if this will tell me anything but its a start.
View 8 Replies View RelatedIam currently on hp windows xp home edition. The video adapter failed on my motherboard. I have replaced it with a 16mb video card and changed the bios to the agp setting for the adapter. I still can not get the start menu to show up.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI understand how to make Office applications always show full menus instead of collapse to only show the most recently used, but I want to do that same thing in my Start button. I have Windows XP Professional, but I have it configured in Start Menu Properties to use the Classic Start Menu. So when I click Start, then hover over Programs, it pops out the side menu, and that side menu always only shows the two or three folders or solo icons I've used recently. That is sooo annoying.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP/SP2 a newish computer and some things changed from how it used to be.From the *Start* Button, there is the further button *Programs*. This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI get an error message saying that An exception occurred while trying to run " "C:WINDOWSsystem32mfyuv.dll" DllGetVersion", only the .dll file is a different one each time I reboot the system. And I can't find any of the .dll files online at all. Not only that, but when the computer is starting up internet explorer is using up all of the memory, even though I can't see anything on screen. This slows everything down and I have to turn it off using the task manager to give enough memory to the System Idle Process.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Winodws XP on a Compaq nc6120. I opened my laptop today to get it working and clicked on Google Chrome's shortcut, and nothing happened. The hourglass cursor came up and it stayed that way for about a half hour, then I tried to turn it off and back on the same thing keeps happening. I have also tried other programs. The task manager doesn't show up and the start bar does not even respond. I ran an HDD self-test and it said that all tests were successful. I use Avast Anti-Virus Free, and tried to download Comodo, but something went wrong, this was the day before theses issues started happening. I'm not very intelligent when it comes to 'under-the-hood' problems with computers, so I have no idea what could be happening.

All I did was uninstall yahoo! mail, yahoo! toolbar, dell media experience, yahoo! extras, and mtv optimizer off my computer. And I tried to uninstall the sims 2, but it didn't uninstall and i can't figure out how to do that. Then i noticed that the recycle bin had disappered off my desktop.
