I have an XP Machine at home with an ASUS motherboard, XP Athlone +2000 Cpu and 512mb Ram. The problem is everytime I unplug my pc from the wall socket it resets the BIOS and when I plug it back in I first need to setup the BIOS. I have replaced the CMOS battery but it still does the same thing.

Running System :~ WinXP SP3 My 1st ( <- Can't count ) post so I d/loaded ESET security suite on 60 day trial without any problems whatsoever. When it came to remove it 48hrs ago I discovered I couldn't re-start my Win F/Wall due to missing ICS (module?), I gave up on that for a while and tried a couple of 3rd party options but got fed up spending more time answering pop up questions (3 in 1 s/ware d/load) so I decided to do a disc recovery.

View 3 Replies View RelatedGot a bit of a problem with my housemates pc.A friend gave him some extra RAM, i checked it out and it was crucial 512mb pc2100 CL2.5, and although it didn't match his exsisting RAM it seemed to me that his mobo would only run the FSB at 200mhz anyway so i went ahead and fitted it.It worked fine I then noticed his system temp was running a little high (60-65 degrees), so i took his heatsink off and cleaned the dust and refitted it with some new thermal compound.I added too much and the temp went up. To nearly 90 degrees.I shut it dwon as i didn't want the cpu to pop, cleaned it off, reapplied less compound and figured this would work fine.Now we have the problem. Most of the time: Power on and nothing happens. No bios, no beeps. Occasionally: Power on, i jump into the bios, the temp looks fine (30-40 degrees) and then it freezes right there in the bios after about 30 seconds to a minute.This sounds like a heat issue, but the last temp reading before freeze is 33 degrees.?I've double and triple checked that the heatsink is on properly and thats fine. I followed the official guide on how much compound to use (a blob the size of an uncooked short grain of rice).

The bios utility setup is not getting opened through access ibm button . In safe mode it shows that system BIOS and video BIOS is not working and it has been shadowed.sometimes the system gets started ,but after one minute ,it stucks and the whole system paused and nothing happens.It may be the virus attack on BIOS and it also changes the time and date configuration of BIOS. so what should i do .And how i can install BIOS driver to the system.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was working when my system seemed to go a bit crazy, bunch of windows opened up and told me that my virus protection was not working etc.. I closed them all and ran a quick scan with Symtec to see if I had somehow picked up a virus. Decided to reboot. When I restarted the computer I had this strange circle going on. It goes thru a normal bootup, and when it is loading the tray, it starts going in a circle. Starts loading up programs and then restarts and then restarts etc. Most of the time, after 3 or 4 times it ends with just the wall paper visable. Now, at this point the computer seems ok, I can run most any program by starting them in Task Manager ( applications, new task etc...). In fact that is how I signed up for this forum and wrote the note. BUT I cannot get the desktop back. The only way is to run Windows Explorer, via task manager, then you get it back, but it does the circle thing continously. IF you can get a program started during the part of the circle where icons etc are visable, then it will run. SO, I tried doing a restore, went back one day and ran the restore. Seemed to run normally. BUT the symptoms are the same ( now it was close to midnight, so I should have gone back farther). NOW, when I tried to go and do another restore, to go back farther, the restore program runs normally, except it will not let me choose a day. Shows many possible days and the help runs etc.. the buttons "push" but nothing happens.

Last week I couldn't shut off computer, because spysweeper and other programs were not responding, I had to cancel programs for computer to shut off.I thought it was virus because 1 month ago I allowed communication when prompted from Norton that suspicious malicous activity possible if I continue , I was trying to download my picture onto a website. I ran a scan and it was clean. I called Norton and they said to deactivate spysweeper and it would take care of the boot problem.

When I booted up today I was welcomed by a default wall paper no icons except recycle bin. The installation went well.But, for some reason now after I shutdown the computer in order for me to turn it back on I have to unplug it from the power supply and then plug it back in. Before i upgraded the computer I was already having a shutdown problem with Windows 98SE.Every time that I would shutdown, it would restart on its own.I tried to trouble shoot the problem.I even downloaded a patch from the Microsoft Website but it still didn't work.So i figured if i upgraded it to XP it would solve the problem, but I ended up with a different problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI believe there has been a small HD problem, the result is that when I boot up, it goes thru normally till it loads the desktop. The wall paper shows up and it starts loading the tray with its programs. During that load, it stop, re-loads the wall paper and starts loading the tray again... sometimes it stops and just has the wall paper up with no icons. When in this state, you can run any program by bringing up task manager and running it in "applications" "new task". I have found that I can run almost any program by getting to the "start" menu fast enough during the time it is loading.I have run a chkdsk in read only mode and it reports errors during phase 2. I can put the PC into the "circle" mode if it is sitting still with the wallpaper by running Windows Explorer. I have tried doing a system restore, went back one day and it seemed to restore, but nothing changed - and - now I cannot do another restore. It shows restore points as available, but when I press on their date nothing happens. The rest of the restore programs responds normally.I hesitate to run chkdsk in repair mode since it might leave the computer useless and it is the way I am writing for this help ! I assume there are some sectors that include WINXp that are bad. It all started while I was online and the PC went a little nuts, I shut it down after a quick scan with Symantec anti virus ( thinking I may have picked up a baddie). The scan showed nothing. The symptoms started on the first reboot.

Some background info that may or may not be relevant: I just had this OS installed though the computer is several years old (I had an ingenuine XP Pro before I cleared my C drive and installed a genuine XP Home). The XP installed was SP1 and then I did all the WUDs up to now I where I have SP3. Also, during that period, I had done a repair install because of some error I was getting following installation of a WUD. I don't know if any of that will be relevant at all, but just thought I should mention it.
I get this BSOD any time I unplug my laptop. It says, "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. .....
I want to unplug everything from the existing mother board, remove it, and slide in a new mother board, reconnect everything, boot from the Win XP CD, do a repair and take off running without having to re-install all the application programs. Will this work, or do I have do do a completely new install of XP and reinstall all the applications

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an optical mouse on a Dell 8400 running x/p pro. The last two weeks my mouse keeps freezing for no apparent reason. I keep hearing my machine make the tone that it uses for a usb device to be plugged and unplugged through out the day for no reason, and the usb mouse just either responds erratically or freezes altogether. I then need to unplug and replug it to make it function again.
I have already tried virus scans, with no result, updated the bios, and received a usb driver hotfix from microsoft, but non of these have remedied the issue. This is a new issue on a 2 year old machine so I can only deduce there is some type of virus or worm running that I can't locate.I have already tried the mouse on another machine it functions correctly, and it is clean, with no optical issues.
once the on button was pushed, it came up with the BIOS screen asking for the password.I removed the CMOS battery, which allowed me to change the Password so I can get onto BIOS now. However, when I boot now it just comes up with the BIOS screen.I set HD to boot first, aswell as setting the clock and date. I then ask it to save and quit, after which it shut's down, and reboots, only, BIOS keeps coming up. And I need to get this sorted asap

I was away from home for about a week and left the machine plugged into the mains but powered down. When I returned home to boot up, it kept doing things like constantly hanging on parts of the bios POST screen, eventually booting up after thirty or so complete restarts. It finally booted into windows but after the last shutting down, it will now not boot up at all. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios several times.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have custom built many computer systems over the years, but I feel like a new comer when trying to decide what board and chip set to use on a socket 939 system. I have used ASUS extensively and will use ASUS on this system. With all of the various chipsets and motherboards available from ASUS for the socket 939 I have reached to a point of total frustration. The more I research the duller my mind becomes and am asking for some help or suggestions.The computer will be used for research, a lot of it on the web, for graphics work and for preparation of presentations. I am not a gamer, am not interested in gaming, and do not have any games on my PC.
I know that the chipset will basically determine which motherboard to use. I am considering the VIA K8T800 PRO chipset, as the ATI and NVIDA chipsets seem to be more for gamers. Again my mind is awash from researching the various chipsets available for the socket 939 from the different chipset manufacturers, ATI, NVIDA, and VIA. I would like some input on which chipset would be best for general computing? Also, I was thinking about an AGP video card, but after research I feel like AGP is becoming a dinosaur. On the other hand it seems like the only advantage of PCI Express is for gamers especially in a dual configuration. Is there any real advantage of PCI Express over AGP for general computing? Would it be advantageous to go PCI Express over AGP?
Brief explanation. I purchased a generic brand laptop and loading xp myself. I had no problems whatsoever until I bought the game Medival II. While I was playing the game, as I had before, it suddenly froze my laptop. I was forced to turn off the power and restart. When I did that, I was able to see the bios screen and enter bios which still seems to recognize everything correctly in the laptop. But when getting out of BIOS system restarts. Just a black screen. Was on the phone with tech support and had to go into setup to check on something. after I got off the phone, I rebooted and tried to access setup and can not. I don't know if I accidentally checked off something that won't allow me to use the keyboard until the machine boots into windows because pressing F2 (Setup) or F12 (Boot Options) when the Dell splash screen appears won't work. It just goes into Windows.

The only way I can get itno my xp pro system, is to use "F8" during the bios check, the select my hd from there, then it seems only half of my programs work, and it also seems to be randomly changing the programs that do not work, when I do this.

View 5 Replies View Relatedfor a while when we first turn on our laptop it won't work, it is not responding. However, the windows task manager does not show anything not responding. My only way to fix this problem is to tell the computer to restart & I will then get a "not responding" message saying that "socket notification sink" is not responding. I tell it to end the program & restart & I sometimes have to go through this over & over & over again until the computer is responding. The biggest part of the problem is that I do not know what the heck "socket notification sink" is! And if I do a search for it nothing comes up & I don't see it in the programs in the control panel & I never see it on the "processes" tab of the windows task manager.Can anyone help? What is it, do I need it, how do I deal with this? I just need the frickin' computer to work when I turn it on, I don't have time for this some days!
