I have a motherboard giga with socket AM2, I have installed an athlon 64 3000+ on my mother broad. Can I change my cpu with an strongr one like Phenom 2 x3 or phenom 2 x4 or athlon 2 x4 or phenom 2 ,3 or 4 ?I don't want to change my motherboard.
I should move into the x64 environment since I wanted to utilize my 64bit processors. I primarily use Adobe CS2 which I heard was 64bit supported. I also found out HL2 is 64bit. However other than having the title of x64 I saw no benefits at all. Driver after another I find out my webcam and printer can't be used. All the programs I installed are in the legacy x86 folder. Some programs don't install correctly due to the folder confusion. And lots of games don't work anymore. I reverted back and will not move back to a 64bit environment until more support comes out when Vista x64 launches next year.
Windows seems to think I have two processors. They're listed under the hardware manager, and I can set affinities for them and everything. But the odd thing is, I only have one CPU. I tried uninstalling one of them, but it just says "Intel Processor".
None of the word processors on my computer, save notepad, work at all. When I double click the application, it shows the hourglass for a split second, and it disappears again, as if I'd never clicked anything. Actually, MS word worked. Except it always had some random error and just exited itself. So as far as I'm concerned, I can't use any of my word processors.I ran a CHKDSK scan, it took several hours to complete, but I did it, and the problem persisted. So I decided to get a HJT log. I downloaded HJT.
I got cable connection on my computer just 2 days ago but my connection always last about 10 minutes and then, I can't load up any page or sometimes a can buy just part of it no pictures or graphics just text, I called the cable company and they tell that the problem are the windows sockets but I don't know what's that or how to fix it, I'm using a hp computer with windows xp pro.
I have custom built many computer systems over the years, but I feel like a new comer when trying to decide what board and chip set to use on a socket 939 system. I have used ASUS extensively and will use ASUS on this system. With all of the various chipsets and motherboards available from ASUS for the socket 939 I have reached to a point of total frustration. The more I research the duller my mind becomes and am asking for some help or suggestions. The computer will be used for research, a lot of it on the web, for graphics work and for preparation of presentations. I am not a gamer, am not interested in gaming, and do not have any games on my PC.
I know that the chipset will basically determine which motherboard to use. I am considering the VIA K8T800 PRO chipset, as the ATI and NVIDA chipsets seem to be more for gamers. Again my mind is awash from researching the various chipsets available for the socket 939 from the different chipset manufacturers, ATI, NVIDA, and VIA. I would like some input on which chipset would be best for general computing? Also, I was thinking about an AGP video card, but after research I feel like AGP is becoming a dinosaur. On the other hand it seems like the only advantage of PCI Express is for gamers especially in a dual configuration. Is there any real advantage of PCI Express over AGP for general computing? Would it be advantageous to go PCI Express over AGP?
I recently bought a dvd drive online but I find it has what I think is a sata socket. Can anyone tell me where I can see a picture of a sata socked so I can be sure, I can describe it looks rectangular with two plastic bars running parallel in the centre one longer than the other with little dots at the bottom.
for a while when we first turn on our laptop it won't work, it is not responding. However, the windows task manager does not show anything not responding. My only way to fix this problem is to tell the computer to restart & I will then get a "not responding" message saying that "socket notification sink" is not responding. I tell it to end the program & restart & I sometimes have to go through this over & over & over again until the computer is responding. The biggest part of the problem is that I do not know what the heck "socket notification sink" is! And if I do a search for it nothing comes up & I don't see it in the programs in the control panel & I never see it on the "processes" tab of the windows task manager. Can anyone help? What is it, do I need it, how do I deal with this? I just need the frickin' computer to work when I turn it on, I don't have time for this some days!
My friend boots her PC simply by switching on the power at the mains electric socket to which the PC's power cable is connected. She doesn't have to press a power button on the PC or do anything with keyboard or mouse. The PC boots into Windows. She shuts it down in the conventional way: Start>Shutdown. Normally she then switches the power off again at the mains electric socket. The OS on her PC is Windows XP Media Center. The PC was bought in a box from a discount retailer and hasn't been modified at all.
I'd like to configure my PC so that I just "switch it on" at the mains electric socket without having to press the power button on the PC. I assumed that it would be simple to configure the PC to do this so I asked advice on another reputable forum. Basically I've been told that it's not possible to do what I've done and seen done on my friend's PC. Clearly it is possible to boot a PC simply by switching on its power supply at the mains electric socket because my friend has done so on her PC for about three years now. I'd just like to know how it's done. Sadly my friend can offer no advice because as she says "Who cares? It's just a computer. I switch it on and off."
Win xp media center edition HP 3700 amd athlon computer Newbie here..At the end of start up (when loading) on my computer I get a box in the middle of my screen saying DISCover (on top) then underneath, it says, Socket failed to initialize. I can click OK and it will go away or I can X out of it and it will go away, however I do not feel that this should be happening. Can anyone help.. I will try to give more info as we go. I believe DISCover has something to do with the media edition XP I have?

I hope someone can help me with an error I keep on getting. I regularly get socket notification errors when Im using Mozilla, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. When they happen, I am unable to access the internet until I reboot.
As I was waiting for Firefox to load, I closed another program, and an alert window appeared saying something like A SOCKET CONNECTION HAS BEEN CLOSED. I've never seen a message like this. What does it mean?
I have an XP Machine at home with an ASUS motherboard, XP Athlone +2000 Cpu and 512mb Ram. The problem is everytime I unplug my pc from the wall socket it resets the BIOS and when I plug it back in I first need to setup the BIOS. I have replaced the CMOS battery but it still does the same thing.
After using my pc I went to turn it off as normal but I switched off the socket too soon, as the pc hadn't finished shutting down. When I went to restart it, it seemed to be ok but before it booted up properly i got this message. Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt WINDOWS SYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. I booted the pc from this disk and I pressed 'r' which took me to the recovery console.
When I try to send or receive mail in Outlook Express 6, I get an error message 0x800CCC0D along with socket error 11004. It's telling me the host cannot be found, to check that the server name is entered correctly. This began immediately after I clicked the stop button while I was downloading mail and then clicked on send/receive a minute later. My connection to the internet is fine. I checked all the vital information, POP3, SMTP, my password, everything. I removed all the information from my account and reinstalled it, still the same error!
