View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore I describe it in length, Here are a few things about my system, my OS, my hardware:I use an iMac that runs XP on a partition using Bootcamp. I use this mainly for gaming and Steam, so I don't necessarily care about wiping the hard drive... but I haven't been able to find my XP disc and it would generally be favorable (although not crucial) if there were a fix that doesn't involve losing all my stuff on XP and suffering through 50 GB of re-installations. I also have Avast! and haven't downloaded anything (outside of downloads while joining servers in Source engine games) within the previous 48 hours of having this issue.

It's telling me the host cannot be found, to check that the server name is entered correctly. This began immediately after I clicked the stop button while I was downloading mail and then clicked on send/receive a minute later. My connection to the internet is fine. I checked all the vital information, POP3, SMTP, my password, everything. I removed all the information from my account and reinstalled it, still the same error!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have custom built many computer systems over the years, but I feel like a new comer when trying to decide what board and chip set to use on a socket 939 system. I have used ASUS extensively and will use ASUS on this system. With all of the various chipsets and motherboards available from ASUS for the socket 939 I have reached to a point of total frustration. The more I research the duller my mind becomes and am asking for some help or suggestions. The computer will be used for research, a lot of it on the web, for graphics work and for preparation of presentations. I am not a gamer, am not interested in gaming, and do not have any games on my PC.
I know that the chipset will basically determine which motherboard to use. I am considering the VIA K8T800 PRO chipset, as the ATI and NVIDA chipsets seem to be more for gamers. Again my mind is awash from researching the various chipsets available for the socket 939 from the different chipset manufacturers, ATI, NVIDA, and VIA. I would like some input on which chipset would be best for general computing? Also, I was thinking about an AGP video card, but after research I feel like AGP is becoming a dinosaur. On the other hand it seems like the only advantage of PCI Express is for gamers especially in a dual configuration. Is there any real advantage of PCI Express over AGP for general computing? Would it be advantageous to go PCI Express over AGP?
I recently bought a dvd drive online but I find it has what I think is a sata socket. View 6 Replies View Relatedfor a while when we first turn on our laptop it won't work, it is not responding. However, the windows task manager does not show anything not responding. My only way to fix this problem is to tell the computer to restart & I will then get a "not responding" message saying that "socket notification sink" is not responding. I tell it to end the program & restart & I sometimes have to go through this over & over & over again until the computer is responding. The biggest part of the problem is that I do not know what the heck "socket notification sink" is! And if I do a search for it nothing comes up & I don't see it in the programs in the control panel & I never see it on the "processes" tab of the windows task manager. Can anyone help? What is it, do I need it, how do I deal with this? I just need the frickin' computer to work when I turn it on, I don't have time for this some days!
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy friend boots her PC simply by switching on the power at the mains electric socket to which the PC's power cable is connected. She doesn't have to press a power button on the PC or do anything with keyboard or mouse. The PC boots into Windows. She shuts it down in the conventional way: Start>Shutdown. Normally she then switches the power off again at the mains electric socket. The OS on her PC is Windows XP Media Center. The PC was bought in a box from a discount retailer and hasn't been modified at all.
I'd like to configure my PC so that I just "switch it on" at the mains electric socket without having to press the power button on the PC. I assumed that it would be simple to configure the PC to do this so I asked advice on another reputable forum. Basically I've been told that it's not possible to do what I've done and seen done on my friend's PC. Clearly it is possible to boot a PC simply by switching on its power supply at the mains electric socket because my friend has done so on her PC for about three years now. I'd just like to know how it's done. Sadly my friend can offer no advice because as she says "Who cares? It's just a computer. I switch it on and off."
How do you find out what the socket and general information (not the processor speed or anything but just the socket and stuff like that?

Next time pc was started it did the boot process and then a DOS screen appeared telling me that Windows did not start successfully and on lower part of screen it gives you 4 choices to start in safe mode and one choice to start at the last known configuration that worked. None of these choices come up. The computer just keeps restarting and then the screen comes up about Windows not starting successfully.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer cannot boot up for some reason. Whenever I try to boot it up, the following text will appear, white words on a black screen: We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power of failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you arent sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

When I turned it back on, it stated that Windows did not start successfully & to choose one of the options: Safe Mode ~ Safe Mode with Networking ~ Safe Mode with Command Prompt ~ Last Known Configuration ~ & Start Windows Normally. At the bottom of the screen it counts down until you choose an option ... unless the time runs out, then it tries automatically to start up. None of the options worked though. Everytime, the computer starts to run, then the Gateway Logo screen shows up, the computer make a "grunting" sound, & it goes back to the screen telling me that windows did not start up successfully.
