Unable To Stop Spam
Aug 15, 2006
I'd like to get rid of the periodic "pop-up" of McAfee warning to sign up on my new Toshiba Satellite A105 with Windows XP Home edition. Is there a way to 'uninstall' this stuff? I already have a DSL modem firewall and a Yahoo mail that stops spam, so don't want an added virus protector.

When I launch Internet Explorer 8 on my XP Pro machine, some crap starts loading, I see on the bottom of IE various sites (also clicking noise gives that away. The funny thing is, nothing pops up, does not re-direct.. And this is weird but all the sudden some gibberish sounds start playing... Sounds like multiple audio into one. I am in IT business, so I tried finding the source in Task manager, fully scanned for worms/trojans, you name it, and nothing was found!!This issue also locks up my IE, and I need to kill it... What the hell is it?? How do you troubleshoot something that only comes out from PC speakers??

Does anyone know of a good anti spam filter I can download, please, to filter out spam BEFORE it gets to my in box in Outlook Express?someone suggested mailwasher, but apparently you have to go thru mailwasher first, a little inconvenient.I know Zone Alarm and Norton filter it out before it goes in, but separate from that, is there another programme that I can download that does it the same way??I am tired of getting a couple genuine emails, and 20-30 spam ...

I have a need for transfering file sizes that exceed most ISP limitations.
These transfers would be between 4-5 individuals to start. I am considering
the FTP protocol. Can anyone recommend good host sites (I am looking at GoDaddy.com and a couple of others) plus what is a good program to prepare and send/receive these files? Another problems is the amount of spam/virus filters now being put in place almost everywhere. Our tranfers will xontain some .exe files and that causes most of these filters to declare them a virus or at least suspicious.

Since I switched to WinXP, I'm having a problem. In many applications, when I go to "File Open", I am presented with a default view of pictorial icons, rather than text listings of the files directory. This did not used to happen in earlier versions of Windows. Is there a way to stop this, so that I would only ever see a List or Details view, and never a pictorial representation of the files?

I ran a scan with AVG and during the scan it found "Adware.BiSpy". That sound ominous. It recommended I "Ignore Once". I decided to delete it instead.
But when I go to delete, A grey box pops up that says:
" WARNING: C:WINDOWSsystem32C55bLs.dll/bi.dll cannot be removed because it is embedded in the archive C:WINDOWSsystem32C55bLs.dll. Do you want to remove the whole archive?"

I had several stop errors. They occurred when in Windows and clicking on IE. On click we got the blue screen, stop errors, abd memory dump messages. I
read into the stop erros and it appears to be caused by a device just installed or a software. My wife just installed the Real Player, for the Big-Brother network, which I didn't think was a good idea but what the heck. The error also points to bad menory.

I recently purchased a new Hard Drive from Western Digital. It's an Internal 500Gb, and its been running so-so. It's sort of loud, mainly as it sort of vibrates the case of the computer (I have one panel off as the cord im using wont fit). Aside from that ive had no problems. What I'm worried about though, are these STOP errors that occasionally pop up Quote: "MEMORY MANAGEMENT - STOP 0x0000001A (0x00041284, 0x0E586001, 0x000015BC, 0xC0883000)" I know that ...0014a has something to do with memory or RAM, and that 0x00041284 is "0x41284A PTE or the working set list is corrupted." according to MSDN.

The computer uses XP home and is set for automatic updates.Every time I switch off it says it is installing update 1 of 1 even if I have not been connected to the net. When I tried using manual update I was told that the installation of <Windows Installer 3.1> had failed. Is the computer trying to install this same thing every time?If it is how do I get it to install properly or remove it from the list of programs ready to be installed?I think that when I installed the drivers for the motherboard this installer, or an earlier version, was installed by the Intel download.

Major virus infection on computer resulted in fdisk and reformat. I used Win 98SE to fdisk and reformat, as I couldn't for the life of me find a format on the Dell Operating reinstallation CD. (could be first mistake)
Used Win 98 SE startup diskette to start system w/CD rom support.
Navigated to D: Drive which containe the XP OS reinstallation. Navigated to I386 folder and typed WINNT to begin reinstalling files.
Start WIn XP setup and began copying files to HD.
Screen shows: The MS-DOS based portion of setup is complete. Setup will now restart you computer. After your computer restarts, WIN XP Setup will continue. Remove floppy, etc.
Computer restarts - did inspection of system, shows Win XP Setup, loading files (drivers, controllers, etc.)
Starting windows - Welcom to Setup:
1. Setup - press enter
2. Repair (using Repair Console)
3. Quite - F3
Pressed enter
Next message:
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer. This may involve running a mfg supplied diagnostics or setup program.
Setup cannot continue Press F3
System then attempts reboot, attempts installation again by booting from HD. Then error message:
Stop error:
Stop: 0x0000007b
(0xf7cb063c, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
At this point I must shut off the PC.
System:
Dell Deminsion 4600 series p4 processor @2.4 GHz
512 MD DDR SDRAM @ 400 MHz
128 MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card
80GB 7200 RMP Ultra ATA HD
Win XP Pro SP1
48x/24x/48x CD-RW Drive
SoundBlaster Live! w/ 5.1 support
I have looked on MS site for the error code and think I understand that the problem is either a hd controller device driver is not installing from the Dell Reinstallation CD and therefore stops the installation of the software. How I can possibly extract and install the driver setup may be looking for.

I'm sure I am overlooking something obvious, but numerous recent problems with my system seem to be (hopefully) tied to the same source.I just don't know what it is.I am running windows XP home, service pack one (I have recently reverted back from SP2 thinking it may be the cause of the problems)
1) Any and all telnet type programs refusing to connect to any host (telnet, zmud, gmud, etc) In the case of zmud I can observe that my computer is in no way interfacing with another machine. telnet error is 'unable to contact host machine'
2) Windows media player (version 10) is unable to retrieve album info. Instead I immediately get a standard IE 'page cannot be displayed' screen.
3) Unable to register for many programs such as Gracenote. In the case of gracenote I recieve a 'socket open failed' error message.I am not currently running any firewall.
I only hae a 56k internet connection, so the instantaneous negative connection responses many of my programs display make it fairly obvious that this is a problem with my machine. I hope it is some silly xp setting I need to change.

I have a friend who has a pentium 2 350 which is currently running on Windows 98SE...yikes!My friend has been complaining that their computer has been running slow and that pop ups are appearing everywhere. I told them that it sounds like their computer has been hijacked and that I would recommend that they format their computer and start from fresh.I want to format their computer and install a newer windows OS (perhaps windows xp) and install a couple of spyware/antivirus programs.

I formatted all partitions to NTFS.
Partitions are C-49g, E-244g and F-303g.
I've separated the software programs from system software. I had not done this before, but it has no bearing on my problem.
OS is XP Pro w/SP3 and all updates and patches that were needed have been installed.
Had a problem initially with installing updates but fixed the installer with a method found on the MS Help and Support site.
Hard drive is thrashing around constantly. The HD light is blinking around 1 per second during idle times.
When at idle Task manager shows 99% cpu idling.
No activity shows up anywhere including I/O read and writes.
I already turned off Indexing Service.
I tweaked according to the suggestiosn at Blackviper's site and also used Harden-it for a bit more security.
Nothing I have done has helped with the thrashing.
I'm a novice and really don't have a clue of how to fix this.
I read of someone else w/the same problem. He unplugged his Optical SATA drive and the thrashing stopped. I tried that and the flashing light slowed down then stopped but the system was slow and unstable. I re-connected the drive and the pc works ok except for the thrashing.
The person who first tried this never posted again.
I Googled this for a while and have found that this is not specific to my hardware. Seems to be an XP problem.

My wrist is getting sore by this doubling or tripling of mouse-clicks to get rid of the pop-up's that has the audacity to steal focus constantly. Make my day and tell me how I get rid if it.
