I am unable to enable the hibernate fetaure!Every time I try so, thorugh the Powermanagment Control Panle, Windows returns the following Messag:"Power Policy Manager unable to reserve hibernate. "The Process cannont access the file because it is being used by another process. It is a Windows XP Professional installed on an IBM ThinkPad G40 Notebook.
Running WinXP Pro SP2 on an Intel D865GBFL motherboard with Celeron processor and ZoneAlarm Security Suite. DSL broadband via DI-524 router with MAC filtering. The Power settings to trigger hibernation after 2 hours were initially working but are no longer effective. I've tried negating hibernation, rebooting, re-establishing hibernation, etc. to no avail.
My HP OfficeJet R40xi works just fine when I boot up or re-boot my desktop PC, but if I've shutdown to "hibernate" or "standby" I consistently get a "This document failed to print" error message. This problem started after I installed the SP-2 patch. I've double checked my parallel port settings in system BIOS and Device Manager and I've removed & reinstalled the driver but so far haven't found a solution.
I've installed Windows 2000 Pro on a laptop computer from Fujitsu Siemens (from year 2000). I am using a Swedish version, so I guess it won't help if I repeat the error-message I get when I am trying to hibernate the computer. However, when I choose to hibernate, the screen flickers and then throws a error-message saying that the system is unable to hibernate because of a driver named "Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100)". I've been trying to change this driver to other versions and different alternative drivers, but I haven't succeeded. Another strange thing is that after a reboot I am able to hibernate, but right after that if I try to hibernate again I'll get that message.
Desktop Manager allows you to switch between multiple desktops creating more elbow room for those who like to stay organized while pushing the max thread limit.1. First grab XP PowerToys from microsoft.com Once installed right click then check: task bar > toolbars > Desktop ManagerYou may now view up to four new desktops. I prefer not to have "Shared Desktops" on as it reminds me more of linux (and is cleaner). Now you may hide the buttons etc. and use Windows key + 1-4 to switch between desktops and Windows key + v to preview.
After a hard disk crash I replaced the disk and did a clean install of Windows XP. Now when I do a Shut DOwn, the operating system will shut down and I get a black screen but the actual machine will no longer power off.I have not changed anything in the bios but cannot find out what the problem is. Can anyone help?
I have a problem I have a new system installed Windows XP professional. Everything was ok till yesterday. I just have a few more things to install and I have the computer plugged into the 4 plug UPS so if the power goes down the computer has 5 minutes to shut down. Well the hydro went off yesterday for a few seconds and all of the other computers came back up but the new one. It was booting into Windows got to the Windows logo and the bar going across loading then after 10 minutes still sat there. I decided to re-boot to see what was wrong as I am a computer tech. Nothing so I went into safe mode that was fine got out of there same thing logo looks like it was starting nothing. I did put in the Windows XP disk thinking to just do a repair still the same thing. I get the Windows screen like it is loading nothing. Go back to safe mode and here is what it says and there is no disk at all in the drive. Can not run setup from Safe Mode rebooting computer.
My laptop used to shut itself down after 15 minutes and go into hibernation. Now it doesn't.I went to the control panel under power schemes and hibernation is enabled after 30 minutes, but the system keeps powering itself up.
The task manager on my Windows XP Pro installation is missing the toolbar. The only way to close the task manager is to log-off. Does anybody have any idea on what I need to do to restore it?
After power outtage (yes I do know about UPSs)-after power returned I am unable to input text in any kind of field including Word, Notepad, ol express, URL boxes-nothing. I re-booted twice but still no joy.
I have my laptop set so that when I close the cover and the machine is on it suspends. When I open it and try to get it to turn back on it won't. I have to restart it using the power button.

I just installed XP Pro SP2 onto this toshiba laptop (fairly good;1.4ghz intel celeron M,512 ddr ram, wireless nic,ati graphics and such) and it seems that standby and hibernate wont work AT ALL. Standby is grayed out in the turn off computer menu and the hibernate tab does not exist in the power options utility in control panel. I've googled around a bit and found no specific option in the BIOS to enable or disable it and as far as i know this laptop SHOULD support it...i mean come on what kind of laptop doesn't standby or hibernate?
I just did clean install of XP on my new Dell D630 notebook and have a problem.I've done plenty of clean installs before and never run into these problems.I checked the Device Manager after installing my drivers/windows updates. For some reason,I'm showing 2 ACPI Batteries,2 965 Chipsets,3 plug and play monitors, 2 Core Duo processors, and several system boards... all I can think of is that there may be newer drivers I need to download (I used the drivers/ utilities disk). I actually had 2 copies of Windows XP showing up when I booted, but one was not actually present, so I deleted it from the boot.ini file, which did nothing.
I am using Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 1) and according to a manual I have you open Task Manager by pressing the ALT/CTRL/DEL keys together, but when I do this nothing happens. Does any kind person know how to open this program ?
I've changed the settings under power management so when i press the power button or close the lid the laptop should hibernate. When i do either of these the screen just stays on preparing to hibernate.really annoying cos i have then have to restart my laptop.
I got a virus, McAfee cleaned them and now today I cannot open task manager. It opens then closes that fast. McAfee still finds no viruses. I've ran ewido 2 days ago and spybot. IE sometimes doesn't load and I cannot access the resistry from RunRegedit.exe, it also opens then closes.
every now and again when i click on something on my screen the screen freezes and the only way i can get out of the problem is to ctrl/alt/delete fetch up task manager select the program and then switch to.this then allows my programs to work again.i have checked for viruses but found nothing
When I would check out 'USB Root Hub' in Device Manager, there would be a 'Power' tab that would list the name of the connected device and how much power it was drawing. Somehow, that particular tab has 'gone the way of the dodo,' and does not appear. Currently, the only tabs I see are General, Driver, Details and Power Management.
disk management error. unable to connect to Logical Disk Manager Service. At this point I've tried enough methods and internet - suggested fixes. Disk Management tool does not work :error "SERVER EXECUTION FAILED"
Im having problems with explorer.exe in my task manager/computer it seems to be randomly using all of my processor power. It normally happens if i access my second hard drive, but does happen at other times. Has anybody got any ideas, it slows my pc down and i have to reboot to rectify the problem. I know this is an essential program that has to be running.
I'm sure I am overlooking something obvious, but numerous recent problems with my system seem to be (hopefully) tied to the same source.I just don't know what it is.I am running windows XP home, service pack one (I have recently reverted back from SP2 thinking it may be the cause of the problems) 1) Any and all telnet type programs refusing to connect to any host (telnet, zmud, gmud, etc) In the case of zmud I can observe that my computer is in no way interfacing with another machine. telnet error is 'unable to contact host machine' 2) Windows media player (version 10) is unable to retrieve album info. Instead I immediately get a standard IE 'page cannot be displayed' screen. 3) Unable to register for many programs such as Gracenote. In the case of gracenote I recieve a 'socket open failed' error message.I am not currently running any firewall. I only hae a 56k internet connection, so the instantaneous negative connection responses many of my programs display make it fairly obvious that this is a problem with my machine. I hope it is some silly xp setting I need to change.
I cannot change the audio on my computer. It's at mute and I cannot raise the volume.I checked my Device Manager and under Sounds, and video game controllers Nothing has an exclamation mark. But under 'Other Devices', my PCI Device, SM Bus COntroller and Video Controller all have exclamation marks. What do I do to fix my problem
I have a friend who has a pentium 2 350 which is currently running on Windows 98SE...yikes!My friend has been complaining that their computer has been running slow and that pop ups are appearing everywhere. I told them that it sounds like their computer has been hijacked and that I would recommend that they format their computer and start from fresh.I want to format their computer and install a newer windows OS (perhaps windows xp) and install a couple of spyware/antivirus programs.
OS is Windows XP. The computer is 6 years old & have never had problems. Recently I'm unable to access internet Explorer. The white page appears and the "connecting" message...and there it stays. Also, I'm unable to download .net versions 2.0 through 3.5, which appears to prevent me from downloading other programs. One tech tried to assist me remotely & ultimately suggested
I'm running WinXP pro and have lost all the reguler power schemes from the power options propreties window. Also I'm unable to Save a new scheme.I beleive the schemes where deleted from the power properties window by right clicking and selecting delete. They used to be there anyway Unknown is listed above Turn off monitor-Turn off hard disks-System standby-System hibernates and everything is greyed out. They are still listed in the registry but with no value set.How do I go about getting the schemes back?
My PC has old configuration, the Max Power Supply can be only up to 350W. You know that every parts of the PC, either external or internal hardware will consume power. What I would like to know is that, what would happen to my PC if the total power consumption exceeds the MAXIMUM VALUE of the power supply unit.
I still cant get it to work. Do you have anymore Ideas. NOTE: in the Enviormental Variables there was no PATH string. Only a PATHEXT one. I did not touch this one. I added a PATH string with the following line %SystemRoot%system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%system32WBEM which I believe is correct. Still no MMC or Group policy editor.
The MMC still gives me the same error. I still cant get into the group policy editor or MMC. I tried yours and wesleys Ideas.
I have a problem when using AD, when I go to edit the default group policy it pops up a box telling me.... " the following entry in the [strings] section is too long and has been truncated
"
There is then a load of texted underneath that relates to the specific string. When you hit the OK button another one appeares and they just keep coming
