hi, I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, and I laptop has only 5 more GB left in my hard drive! when I tried deleted unnecessary files and the free disk space go up. But when I tried deleting actual programs from Add/Remove Programs, the free disk space just stay the same! I know the programs I deleted must total up to at least 2 GB. I tried a different approach. I installed a new program and the free disk space decreased. then I unistalled the same said program, but the free disk space didn't go back up! I tried to using Disk Cleanup, but it didn't work! Can anyone please tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?
Like many PC owners, I am running low on disk space. My once seemingly massive hard drive capacity of 185gb is now reduced to around 18gb, which has now prompted me to have a serious clear out. Problem is, I honestly can't work out where all the used space has gone! O.K. so, I have trawled through My Documents and held my mouse over all the folders that are likely to contain the most files - like, for instance, My Music, which shows at around 30gb, or, My Pictures, which has a filesize of approx. 20gb. I have also looked at all the other folders in My Documents, none of which seem to exceed a few dozen, or a few hundred megabytes. I have also looked at my installed software to see if any programs are swallowing up excessive space. But again, none seem to individually exceed more than a few hundred megabytes, at most. So, were has all the rest of my missing 100gb gone? My question is simple. Is tere any easy and fast way to determine exactly what proportion of the HDD is taken up by what software? Is there a software program available (preferably freeware) that will scan the drive and tell me exactly whats taking up space, and to what degree? I have tried a few programs that say they will do exactly this, but after a scan all they seem to display is a pie chart showing whole sections lumped together, such as My Documents - total filesize 40gb etc. But this isn't really that helpful. It needs to be more thorough and broken-down than that. For all I know, there may be a huge amount of space occupied by some long-since archieved files, of which I am totally oblivious. But, with the average PC holding millions of such files, how could I ever locate the possible cause unless I have software to do it for me?
I'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb.
I recorded a show onto a -RWDVD. It plays on the dvd player fine. I wanted to edit it and then burn to a -R disc. BUT, my computer "E" drive says the disc is blank.
I have been trying to back up my data onto DVDs and I have tried using Nero9 and Roxio 10 and in each case the DVD burns fine, but each time I try to read it in Windows Explorer, although it lists all the data that is burned on the disk, it freezes and will not open any file type, or folder on the burned data dvd.
So i'm getting this error msg when I boot up Windows XP.Disc Read Error Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart. I do it but then it just comes up with that screen again.I have tried countless of times but it doesn't want to seem to work. This started happening after a game crash. Of artifacting and overheating and all that. So right now i'm using Ubuntu but it sucks. I hate it. I'm getting artifacts all over the screen. It's driving me insane. I can't seem to go into Windows Safe Mode either like trying to press F8 and all that. Otherwise, I would have tried to do a System Restore.
I have had XP Home installed on a new Seagate hard drive for about 2 months. Suddenly, the computer did a restart and now it will not open Windows. It finds all my drives and then goes to a screen displaying "a disc read error has occured. Press control, alt, delete to restart." On restart, I receive the same message. I have tried checkdisc, fix boot and fix master boot record in the recovery console on my cd but nothing works. Is this a problem with the hard drive or Windows? Any suggestions would be helpful. I would hate to have to reinstall Windows.
I tried to google this problem, but entering not enough space into google comes up with a lot of random junk... e.g. zoo websites with not enough space for animals! When I install any programs they all report that i have my 23gb free, which windows and all hd space reporting programs say, but when they actually go to install they say not enough space.
crash lost everything on my drive. I reinstalled and have run some recovery programs and recovered the files that were still intact. One of my disk drives I had to reformat and I have put maybe a Gig of files back on it. Windows explorer is showing that it has 15.7 GB used on the disk but I cannot see the files except for those I have added since the crash. Can I recover the files or the space
I am trying to reformat my computer... I had some alzheimers issues with it.. it lost some files etc etc. So I figured why not a better time to completely wipe it clean.I have done this before on other computers and its gone so smoothly with the "press space bar" deal as it boots from the XP disc. I reordered all my boot config so the cdrom is first then the hdd then something called an fdd then floppy.BUT when I exit bios and restart the boot it never asks for the space bar press...
I just installed XP, over ME. Then afterward, I got a message that went something like; " disc space dangerously low on D:/. If you continue system restore may not function properly, to undo any harmful changes..." . After checking my available space on C drive it was 26+ Gigs. I never could download my photos because it would kick me out of the program half way through.
I'm in a bit of a pickle. In februari I bought a pc with Vista. Having nothing but problems on the way, I decided to upgrade to XP (yes, upgrade).Everything went fine and the installation was a succes, except that my hard disc is only 127gb now instead of the 500gb I used to have.I thought, no problem, I'll just install PartionMagic 8, repartition the free space and I'm good to go.Partion Magic cannot find the extra space, however, a demo version of Partition Table Doctor 3,5 can. The problem is, if I scan the free space I get nothing but bad sectors and the program can't seem to restore or repair the extra space.I'm going to call the company I bought it from today, but I'm afraid my warrenty is invalid, since I reformatted the drive and lost the recovery files as well.500GB hard disc, in Vista it was prepartitioned into C: at 470GB and D: at 30 as recovery space. One strange thing I noticed, but can't reproduce now, I found a Linux partition of about 7MB using either PartitionMagic or Doctor, can't find it anymore though..
From time to time I get a Windows error messages saying "Resource Error". Well today while Avast was upgrading I got this message - In the top of the message box it was titled "Windows-Low On Registry Space "The message read: "The system has reached the maximum size allowed for the system part of the registry. Additional storage requests will be ignored". AMD XP2700+, MMX, 3DNow - 2.2 GHz 2 gig RAM Windows XP Home Addition(5.1), Build 2600 BOIS - Pheonix - AwardBIOS v6.ooPG System - Asus - A7N8X Direct X - 9.0c Display - Radeon 9800 Pro Sound SB Audigy2 ZS
I have been looking at image recovery programs to see what can be extracted from the free space after all the cleaning operations have been implemented. Having seen the amount of information that can be recovered I will no longer empty the Recycle Bin without shredding the contents, but it seems that an enormous amount of information is still being collected which the normal individual is unaware of.
This I know is a simple question but I have forgotten how to get the information. You know when you are in Windows Explorer and click on one of your folders, you can see (at a glance) at the bottom how many files are contained therein? I have reloaded Windows and now cannot see this info anymore. I have looked in Tools, Folder Options, etc but it hasn't helped me. Please can anyone tell me how to get this info back?
When I insert a cd into the disk drive I can hear it spinning and grinding but it never plays the disk & If I insert a blank disk to copy music, I get an error reading 'insert blank disk'.
I have just installed XP media center on my new pc (complete specs below) and everthing loads great. After windows loads it runs normally from anywhere between 2-15 min. then the system completely hangs on me frozen, I don't get a blue screen error or anything just a complete freeze. Here are all of the steps, Consult the MB manual and adjust the RAM to the compatible voltages in BIOS 1.8 default board setting 2.1 RAM setting Swapped out RAM with another set I had and repeated above. Checked all connections from the power supply. Switched the connector from 4pin to SATA power connector for hard drive thinking I might have overloaded a rail
I have burned data on DVD ,but for some reason when I try to use it ,the system(Windows XP Professional SP2 ) gives me "please insert disc" message. It started happening after I reinstalled windows ,but the data was burned onto disc on previous installation .It was the same system,I just had to reinstall it to fix a lot of accumulated problems .This happens with DVDs from various manufacturers and with different types of data,so I believe it's a system problem. It registers the disc being put in the DVD/CD drive(the icon is shown in my computer menu, although sometimes it is not) but it still gives me the insert disc message.98 % of the time it works O.K. ,but it should work all the time ,right?
I have two CD-ROM drives on my Dell desktop. Until today they worked fine. I installed a new keyboard driver (which isn't working right) and now I am unable to read any CD in either drive. It's a MicroInnovations KB535BL keyboard with hot keys. The keyboard works but the hot keys don't. Their technical support gave me a different driver to try and that wouldn't install at all. I haven't heard from their second level technical support. So I tried to reinstall the keyboard driver from the CD that came with the keyboard. That's when I discovered that I couldn't read any CD on either of my CD-ROM drives. I haven't been able to contact MicroInnovations second level support.
I can't seem to get my brand new firewire 1394 card made by PPA Int'l to work. My old firewire PCI card was fried and so I got a new one. Can anyone walk me through the steps internally in the comp. to get the card to recognize my external HD and also my Digidesign Pro Tools 002 unit to work.
I have Windows XP and am using a CDW / DVD R/RW. I have used it in the past to burn CDs. Tonight I am trying to insert a movie disc and no matter which movie I insert, nothing autoplays. In addition, when I click the drive in explorer, it says please insert a disk into drive d. I have tried a number of different movies to no avail.
I use briefcase to synchronize files on two computers. I can not sync. some folders because of "read only" attribute. When I uncheck read only box and apply it seems to correct but when you reopen properties, it is checked again.
I had to hit the ole restore button and my computer bought me back to the beginning ( XPsp1). When I try to install SP2 I keep getting :" Unable to read or write to database" And then it said:" Service pack 2 did not complete" I also check the Microsoft website and i said I was getting a error code: 0x800710D9
I have just bought a new PC so I could let the kids have the other one in their room. Both PC's are emachines and run XP. I have successfully networked the two with a crossover cable but I thought I'd reboot the old one to clear it from all the stuff I had on it. When I start the PC up with the recovery disk in either the D or E drive it doesn't get recognized and just goes strait to the user page. Any ideas on how I can get round this? I can enter the set up stage by pressing Del but i'm a bit green on this!
I have downlaod a new program (PPstream) but unable to read the instruction. I tried several language setting but without any success. Actually, I can read some sentences but the rest is unreadable.
I'm trying to boot to my trusty 98 bootup disk and it says it can't read the c:....my only guess is that it's an ntfs partition.how can I format this thing?
I just did a spybot-search and destroy check on my computer today and something really lame came up with my system fonts. First thing I noticed was that my browser fonts in firefox are messed up. is this the same settings you have? because for some reason I'm getting a Garmond type font.
