I just installed XP, over ME. Then afterward, I got a message that went something like; " disc space dangerously low on D:/. If you continue system restore may not function properly, to undo any harmful changes..." . After checking my available space on C drive it was 26+ Gigs. I never could download my photos because it would kick me out of the program half way through.
View 8 RepliesI'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb.

Having nothing but problems on the way, I decided to upgrade to XP (yes, upgrade).Everything went fine and the installation was a succes, except that my hard disc is only 127gb now instead of the 500gb I used to have.I thought, no problem, I'll just install PartionMagic 8, repartition the free space and I'm good to go.Partion Magic cannot find the extra space, however, a demo version of Partition Table Doctor 3,5 can. Like many PC owners, I am running low on disk space. My once seemingly massive hard drive capacity of 185gb is now reduced to around 18gb, which has now prompted me to have a serious clear out.
Problem is, I honestly can't work out where all the used space has gone!
O.K. so, I have trawled through My Documents and held my mouse over all the folders that are likely to contain the most files - like, for instance, My Music, which shows at around 30gb, or, My Pictures, which has a filesize of approx. 20gb.
I have also looked at all the other folders in My Documents, none of which seem to exceed a few dozen, or a few hundred megabytes.
I have also looked at my installed software to see if any programs are swallowing up excessive space. But again, none seem to individually exceed more than a few hundred megabytes, at most.
So, were has all the rest of my missing 100gb gone?
My question is simple.
Is tere any easy and fast way to determine exactly what proportion of the HDD is taken up by what software?
Is there a software program available (preferably freeware) that will scan the drive and tell me exactly whats taking up space, and to what degree?
I have tried a few programs that say they will do exactly this, but after a scan all they seem to display is a pie chart showing whole sections lumped together, such as My Documents - total filesize 40gb etc. But this isn't really that helpful. It needs to be more thorough and broken-down than that.
For all I know, there may be a huge amount of space occupied by some long-since archieved files, of which I am totally oblivious. But, with the average PC holding millions of such files, how could I ever locate the possible cause unless I have software to do it for me?

Having seen the amount of information that can be recovered I will no longer empty the Recycle Bin without shredding the contents, but it seems that an enormous amount of information is still being collected which the normal individual is unaware of.

View 14 Replies View Relatedbasically i got this very old and cheap brandless webcam, it came with a mini-cdr which holds the drivers, when i place the mini-cdr into my dvd drive, it made a load ###scccrreeeaaaccchhhing### noise, then the installer runs and i got the error shown in the top of the pic, as i continue the installation i got another error, shown at the botton of the pic, now i know maybe the disc is corroupt or something, so i decided to use device manager to install the drivers manually.
when windows did found the driver on the disc, it turns out to be a notepad file, which was strange, but i continue to install anyway, but windows pops up a message saying the driver isn't signed or could be harmful or something like that, i cancel the installation and uplugs the camera. i thought it made sense since the mini-cdr could actually be a coaster or a badly burnt disc, as the installer states there's an error, but should i try anyways? i was thinking if i click yes when device manager ask me and continue to manually install the drivers would i damage my pc? when i place the mini-cdr in my dvd drive, it made a very load screeeeaachhhing noises, did the disc damage the lens or the drive?
i have a labtec web cam with software but i have a dell mini and have no where to insert the disc, please help

I've noticed that once defraged since a few weeks ago I HAVE GONE from over 70% free space down to only under 40%....I don't run any major software at the moment BUTDO use the internet on ADSL most days BUT not to any great extent. I already used cd-bootable Knoppix to copy all documents i needed to rescue. At this point a complete Re-install would be great, but alas, no install disk came with this notebook, And i lost the recovery discs i made. I do NOT have any XP disc available.How can I begin a re-install or similiar from the Hardisk with no Discs?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI get a little confused by terms like restore vs recovery, which are often interchanged incorrectly IMO -and then there are the terms bootable disc and startup disc, which can also get confusing - and I have seen other terms used also.
please explain exactly what you mean by the "bootable XP CD". I have a new XPsp2 home edition pc, and I had a millennium before that (which I made a "startup disc" for in add/remove programs - so I guess a startup disc is yet another term for boot disc - it was only a 3-1/2" diskette (less than a meg), and it would get my millennium to boot by typing "scanreg /restore" at a prompt that you eventually came to.
For my XP, I immediately made a Compaq "recovery dvd" (it took 2-dvd's) utilizing the "Compaq recovery cd-dvd creator" in start/programs/pc tools. This dvd (can also use cd's but it takes 8 or 9 cd's I believe) contains everything that is on the pc (from the factory), and which is also in the system recovery partition D:. There is also something called a "Recovery Tools CD", which I did not burn, since it did not seem necessary, after
reading about it in the "troubleshooting and system recovery guide" that came with my Compaq. I will burn that one to, if you can explain what it will do, that I can't ultimately achieve by using the "recovery dvd". The manual said that one of the things the "recovery tools cd" did was to remove the system recovery partition (drive D), so you could use it - but I'm sure there is another way of doing that from within the pc once you got it running using the recovery dvd - am I right - I've never messed around with partitioning, since I have no need to.
My new XP did not come with any "bootable CD" per se, and I made the "recovery dvd", as stated above. So please shed some light on what the "bootable XP CD" is that you refer to (because you said that a "restore Cd is really overkill" - I assume you mean the "recovery CD" that I mentioned). Also please provide your comments on the "recovery tools CD", and any other comments you have on the various terminologies I have mentioned above.
After putting the windows XP CD in and rebooting, now whenever the computer is restarted I get the blue screen that says unable to find disc press F3 to exit setup. How do I stop this so computer will reboot normally?

Only NTFS partions can have files with file size more than 4GB..i hope theres nothing wrong with my windows or my hard disk..and i wanna know if theres a way to move that ISO image..thanx in advance.
I recently noticed that my free space on hard drive has been eroded and my used space has been increasing. I have not added any software. Much to my dismay I cannot figure out why this would occur. We did make recovery disks and removed our partition some weeks ago. It seems our C drive is using up space without any explanation. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have tried to install a new xp pro sp3 disc on a new computer but have been getting errors in the installation. I have tried 3 different times but it says that the disc is missing some components and when it is final it does not work properly.
I finally talked to a tech person that asked me if I had another disc and I have an older sp2 disc. He said to install that but when I put in the key for my new disc it does not work with my older disc. I finally put in my old key and it worked fine. THe installation went off without a hitch but I won't be able to use my old key when I activate it. When I install the sp3 download will I be able to change my key to the new disc key?
I had to uninstall HP Photosmart C4100 series only because I was missing some wording on the buttons that just disappeared for some reason, It said to uninstall the program and then just reinstall it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't get it. the more i go on, the more and more disk space seems to vanish into thin air. xp usually takes a couple of gigs up on the hard disk, right? maybe 5 gigs at the very most. i've got 8 gigs taken up by videos in one folder. the programs i've got installed are negligable. the program files folder is 500mb. and yet my disk only has 20 gigs spare on a 40 gig hard disk. i've looked in every folder on the hard disk and i simply can't find any folders with anything of any great size in it. i've defragged the hard drive.
