View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a file that I have no use for which I would like to delete. It is stored in an out of the way directory (not system directory of any sort) and I found it when I was doing some housekeeping. The name of the file is PKUNZIP.EXE and it would have been copied onto this computer a couple years ago with some other files. Now I know what pkunzip is, but xp pro this file certainly is not required. Alas when I try to delete it I get this: Error Deleting File or Folder Cannot delete PKUNZIP: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. So I'm pretty determined to get rid of this guy, not because it's a problem, but because it's made me mad hehe. So I tried to boot up with a 98 boot disk and delete from DOS. No go, 98 boot wont recognize NTFS.

I am going to re-install windows and I have a Compaq Presario computer that has a C and D drive. Is there any way I can make my computer one drive or is there a plus side to having two drives? Could I safely delete these files? Should I leave them and just reinstall to C drive? I thought I read somewhere that Compaq had portioned drives and it was a waste of space. I have reinstalled Windows before, have done backup of files I want to save and am doing the reinstall to get rid of a few things and fix some things that are going on?. My fault for messing with registry? probably?. Live and learn. C has total size of 32.9GB with 18.2GB free and D has 4.33GB with 2.44GB free. If you need any more info for suggestions please advise and I will respond as soon as possible. Once I finish back up of my photos? I will be ready to re install Windows.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have built an new xp pro machine and upon first boot up, it created (among others) a My Documents folder. Then when I used the Files and Settings Transfer wizard, it moved my old My Documents folder from the old machine to the new one. Problem is, they have different names. I expect if I'd named them identically, there wouldn't be two of them. Each file I try to save defaults to the one from the old machine. My question is, can I safely
delete the other?

I'd like to find all copies of the registry (besides the active one, of course) and erase them. I'd be grateful for guidance.
View 12 Replies View RelatedA got a new HP d290 model computer, which came with Free DOS O/S (that is without the Windows XP operating system. It has a Samsung brand 80 GB HD. However on partitioning and formating this HD (using Win 98 / SE,FDISK.Exe file), the total space available is only 78,109,888 bytes (split in to 3 parts). On another computer, made by a different company and with almost similar configuration, I have a Maxtor brand 80 GB HD and on partitioning and formatting, it had 80, 009, 888 bytes available (that is 1.9 GB more)This HD also has 3 partitions. It seems the HP's Samsung HD has a hidden partition. I tried to find it with FDSIK.EXE and also with Partition Magic (version 8.2) and Partition Manager (version 5.5), but was unsuccessful. Is there any other Partition related software, which can show a hidden partition and also be able to delete the same (without damaging the C~ partition)?
