I am going to re-install windows and I have a Compaq Presario computer that has a C and D drive. Is there any way I can make my computer one drive or is there a plus side to having two drives? Could I safely delete these files? Should I leave them and just reinstall to C drive? I thought I read somewhere that Compaq had portioned drives and it was a waste of space. I have reinstalled Windows before, have done backup of files I want to save and am doing the reinstall to get rid of a few things and fix some things that are going on?. My fault for messing with registry? probably?. Live and learn. C has total size of 32.9GB with 18.2GB free and D has 4.33GB with 2.44GB free. If you need any more info for suggestions please advise and I will respond as soon as possible. Once I finish back up of my photos? I will be ready to re install Windows.

I'm trying to clean up my hard drive. Having run up against some problems with registry 'cleans' (which needed professional fixing) I'm keen to be safe. In my user folders I have hundreds of megabytes of Temporary Internet Files within Local Settings folders. I often use CCleaner to tidy up but it seems to have missed them. Can I safely delete these Temp files?
I have built an new xp pro machine and upon first boot up, it created (among others) a My Documents folder. Then when I used the Files and Settings Transfer wizard, it moved my old My Documents folder from the old machine to the new one. Problem is, they have different names. I expect if I'd named them identically, there wouldn't be two of them. Each file I try to save defaults to the one from the old machine. My question is, can I safely delete the other?
I reinstall Windows XP Home because My computer was messed up. It deleted all my files.. so on my desktop screen I don't have any Program Files Icons. BUT it still save my Files. How do I zap everything back on my desktop screen so I don't have to go Download each files as new again??? And I how do i get my Internet Favorite Links and my Notepad with my saved information in it? Yes I did try the "Start" and then program files and none of the programs are there.. BUT yet it is in my Program Hard drive C: Program files. with the Program and all it's content?
Whenever I do a "disk cleanup" on my hard drive, it shows a whole bunch of categories which can be cleaned up.When I do, there's one category ("Web Client/Publisher Temporary Files" )which always shows 32KB before AND after the clean-up.Could that be associated woth FrontPage 2003, and if so, where are these 32 KB hiding? (Which files[s] I mean?) How come "Disk Cleanup" does not delete these files, even though it tells me that "these files can be deleted safely"?Can I delete them manually?
The "Safely Remove Hardware" function running in my eMachine XP Home Edition includes USB flash drives in its warning list. While I recognize that mechanical storage devices such as CD/DVD drives, etc., should be addressed, is there any kind of subtle danger to any system functions if I ignore the "safely remove" process when connecting and/or disconnecting USB flash drives?
I tried to install a Win XP with the install cd but for some reason I am not able to repartition my hard disk. My new copy of WinXP is still full of the old junk. When installing winxp, the cd gives you the choice to create a new partition of your harddisk by pressing C but it never worked. So I installeda new winxp in the same partition as the old one.Do you know how to delete the old version completely from your hard disk?
When I start up whether in SAFE Mode or Normal I automatically get the Confirm Delete Message. This applies to programs, icons, photos, documents , folders etc - I cannot get to any of my work to back it up. I have tried Stinger -F-Force and W32.Blackmal@mm Removal Tools. Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware. Sorry forgot to mention other things tried. The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again. There is no way I can get to any of my folders or files to burn to a CD as backup without the Confirm Delete message.
I am attempting to clean out my temp files on my Windows XP Home. The files and folders that I am addressing are: C:WINDOWSTEMP*.* *.OLD *.CHK *.BAK ~*.* _*.* and MSCREATE.DIRI have managed to clean all but one, which is _*.* When I run the search, I get the result of 144 files. I click on edit, select all, then file, delete. I receive the following error "cannot delete file: Cannot read the source file or disk" (please view screen shot). When I right click, I have no delete option, just "open containing folder, copy, and extract. (please view screen shot). I have run AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, and Avg Free. I also have CCleaner, Easy Clean which I have run. I have also used "Move On Boot" by putting the file path in the MOB window and try to have MOB delete the file. MOB says the file will be removed on the next boot.
There are many files listed in this folder. I am unable to delete them. When I go to this directory in safe mode command prompt there are no files. I even used dir /A:H to included hidden files and there are none. But I can still see them in Windows XP PRO. I have Norton 360 and it did not find any viruses. Went I try to delete them windows gives no errors. Some of the files even have the same name and extension. Is there a cache or a temp file I need to delete first?
is there anyway to eliminate duplicate files? i know i have to have a ton of them having reinstalled everything.
i would prefer not to use Norton......have had nothing but bad experiences with them. is there any kind of system built in to XP i could run to try and locate and eliminate these files?
An update cause my Sony Vaio laptop to show only the wallpaper at startup. It never finished booting, but I could launch Firefox from task mgr. Well, after several days of poking, prodding, regedits, and reinstalls I still could not complete the SP2 update. Did an XP repair & still could not get SP2 laid on. Last night I finally did a complete XP reinstall. I'm now in the process of d-ling drivers.
I named the new install - "New," my previous was "Me". I also have docs&settings for: Admin, All Users, All Users.Windows, Default User, Default User.Windows, Me.Vaio. All Users seems to have all of my installed progs listed in the Start Menu>Progs, yet my new install shows only the Windows bare basics.
1 - How do I get those imported to my "New" profile? Simply drag/drop the Program Files folder??
2 - Somehow the desktop folder for the previous install (Me) is gone. Of course the new install has the clean desktop. need to know the way to recover the old one & port it to the new install?
Lately my pc has experienced lots of different problems. It all started one day when I installed a program named xfire. It was running fine with xfire until I came home from school. Heres a list of the problems:
1. live messneger has forgot my email and runs slowly when i attempt to retype it. 2.Live messneger cannot connect at all. It just comes up with this message straight away 3. The copy of windows I'm running has been classed as an illegal copy by the microsoft website (my pc has a preinstalled installation of windows which was on when it was bought from a store). 4.Many installation programs now come up with errors about missing files. 5.I can't find any viruses with avast,ad-aware or spybot. 6. I uninstalled ie 7 which somehow allowed the normal windows messenger to work without the scripts errors I got before, but now I can't reinstall ie7. The setup always comes up with a missing file error.
When I click on Control Panel or My Computer icon nothing happens. I think these files were deleted. My daughter was uninstalling McAfee and had to boot into safe mode to manually delete McAfee. This must have deleted the files needed for the Control Panel & My Computer. I tried to reinstall windows XP from the original disk that came with my computer.
I am new to this forum, I hope I have posted in he right place: I am having a problem deleting files via *old, *.chk, *.bak, etc. I am getting "cannot delete file: "Cannot read from the source file or disk". There are several in each of the fore mentioned folders. I can go through and delete some files, but the issue files remain with the "cannot delete file" etc. I have googled for info but what I have found is greek to me. My OS is Windows XP.
I'm cleaning up my father's PC and I found that there are over 20,000 BIN and SPJ files on the C drive. I don't know what they do. Most files are about 1 kb in size. but a few are about 2000 KB. I cut and paste them all into one folder on the C drive and no computer functions have been affected. They are taking up about 2 GB on the disk. I am wondering if I can safely delete them.
This XP annoyance has bugged me for a long time. When I'm cleaning up my filing system, I may consider deleting some folders, but first move out of them certain files I may still want to keep. However, when I try to delete the no-longer-needed folders, XP constantly comes up with a message telling me I cannot delete the folders because it may be being used by another program and to first shut that program down. Well, it is NOT being used by another program because ALL the programs that could remotely have anything to do with that folder- minus the OS, anti-virus, etc., are OFF!
Even if I shut down EVERYTHING except for the OS, that same idiotic error message still comes up and refuses to allow me to delete the folder UNTIL I reboot the system. So,I have to write down each and every folder I plan to delete and then delete them after rebooting the system. And STILL the occasional time the error message comes up telling me it's being used by another program. I'd like to know what idiot at Microsoft came up with this glitch? Personally, If I wrote the software for this OS, I would at least mention which program was using the file I was attempting to delete and have the option for this program to be shut off. BUT Somehow the people at Microsoft manage to once again lose grasp of the obvious. So, now that I've once again given my opinion re: the inner workings of MS, is there anyone out there that has had this problem and has figured out a solution other than rebooting the system?
Can't delete some files in EX Pro.Error message access deniedI tried to do a delete at boot, still didn't work.Is there a good delete at boot out there?I used to use Norton Commander with Win98,boy do I miss it.
I bought a new computer with a new hard drive and had the technician transfer files from my old hardrive over to the new one. Now I have my old Windows folder from before on there now and I wan to get rid of it. Problem is, it won't let me delete some of the files.
It says that the files are in use, but that is not so because it's an old Windows directory. How do I delete files like DLL's which don't want to be deleted and aren't being used?
I am having problems deleting some Windows Temp Files. There are three that absolutely will not delete even when I cold boot or using the search feature and trying to delete them that way. ( sometimes that has worked for me in the past). . The three files are Jet8B96.tmp, Jet9829.tmp and ZLT04e0c.tmp.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them? I am comfortable with using DOS if necessary. And oh yes, ran Ad-Aware, and AVG and cleaned out registry as well.
I downloaded a registry checker and it had a thing in it I could see if I had any duplicate files....HOLY SHAMOLY, there are a ton of them, I am afraid to delete....see below, can someone advise on which is safe to delete? trying to clean up computer. Kindest regards, Christine....OH MY, there are so many I posted two sets and they are too long to post. Maybe just advise me on if I can delete one if there are 2?
I deleted some large (2 to 3MB) Photoshop files in order to free up disk space, but two of them cannot be deleted or moved from recycle bin. "Empty recycle bin" command or "Delete command" yield the following error message; [error messages refer to the files as Dc2 and Dc8, respectively]: "cannot delete Dc8:it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." "Restore" command, attempting to cut and paste, or attempting to drag either file to another folder yield this error message: "cannot move Dc8:it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." This happens even when recycle bin is right-clicked from the desktop icon immediately after start-up and with no programs running.
I installed UNIX Services for Windows. Then I installed a UNIX application. Then I wanted to remove both. I tried to removed the application but some of the files would not let me delete them.I then uninstalled UNIX Services for Windows which worked fine but left behind it's folder 'C:SFU' because a few application folders are there and are write protected.I installed them under UNIX Services for Windows and now I can't delete them.Any back doors or UTILS to get rid of them? I tried KILLBOX but it could not do it.
I have run ad adware and spybot search and destroy. When I run adware it allows me to delete all problems except one. When I find this file in the windows explorer it will not allow me to delete this file.It says it is being used by someone else. When I reboot it changes names and spreads all over again.
