True Duplicate Files - Delete?

Jul 18, 2006

I want to purge my system from "true" duplicate files. However, when I tried to do so in the past, I ran duplicate file finders, and deleted files which were supposedly duplicates. I then had to locate and reload a number of them because I began to have inconsistencies in my system. My system presently shows a large number of duplicates, but how can I be assured they are before I delete them?

Reinstall - Can Safely Delete Files?

Jan 21, 2006

I am going to re-install windows and I have a Compaq Presario computer that has a C and D drive. Is there any way I can make my computer one drive or is there a plus side to having two drives? Could I safely delete these files? Should I leave them and just reinstall to C drive? I thought I read somewhere that Compaq had portioned drives and it was a waste of space. I have reinstalled Windows before, have done backup of files I want to save and am doing the reinstall to get rid of a few things and fix some things that are going on?. My fault for messing with registry? probably?. Live and learn. C has total size of 32.9GB with 18.2GB free and D has 4.33GB with 2.44GB free. If you need any more info for suggestions please advise and I will respond as soon as possible. Once I finish back up of my photos? I will be ready to re install Windows.

How does one delete duplicate context-menu entries in XP?For example, if I right click on a .gif image file or .jpg image file, TWO "Preview"'s show up in the right context menu - one bolded, the other not. One opens with one application, the other with a different application.I have already attempted to go to Folder options, File Types, Advanced, and try and "find & fix" from thre, but never came across the dups.

Unable To Access Certain Financial Websites -cant Delete Duplicate File

Aug 11, 2005

It seems that Windows has gone AWOL again. I can not access certain websites.mostly ones that require secured access like financial websites: paypal etc. I can usually get the first page, but when I click sebsequent links, the browser says it can not find it. This applies to both IE and Firefox so the problem must be in the user profile of windows I presume.

My Norton's internet security no longer starts itself upon startup either even though I click the box for it to begin upon startup. In msconfig, Norton's is set for startup as well...

I don't want to system restore as I've had problems with deleting duplicate files and such

Multiple My Documents Folders-safely Delete Others?

Aug 13, 2005

I have built an new xp pro machine and upon first boot up, it created (among others) a My Documents folder. Then when I used the Files and Settings Transfer wizard, it moved my old My Documents folder from the old machine to the new one. Problem is, they have different names. I expect if I'd named them identically, there wouldn't be two of them. Each file I try to save defaults to the one from the old machine. My question is, can I safely
delete the other?

Duplicate Files With Same Name - Get Rid?

Mar 20, 2010

I recently had to restore my XP system, everything appeared to be working great. I have been cleaning out duplicate pictures and such on my computer. Today I went to a search of all pictures on my computer. From there I do a List and sort by size, after that I click on images so I can see if there are duplicates on my files. There is duplicates of everything however when i look into the file containing the pictures or documents it shows that both of the items are in the same location. When I go to that location there is only one of the items. Does anyone know why my search is showing duplicates of everything however they have the same path.

I am at a loss as to why everything is duplicated on my computer, especially because when you look where they are located they are in the exact same files.

Duplicate Files Created?

Jun 13, 2008

Recently re-installed WXP after Computer Crash.

Copied "My Documents" folder from thumb drive to the computer
.
Noticed several folders in "My Documents" were missing so thought I didn't back up to the thumb drive often enough so figured they were lost in the crash.

Wasl looking for a file and was unsure in which folder it might be located so did a "search" and found it in "My Documents". Went back to the "My Documents" folder and it wasn't there so did another search. This is what I discovered:

I went into Windows Explorer and found "My Documents"

I went into "My Computer" and then the "C" drive and found Documents and Settings, Gary, My Documents in the tree

Merging Files - Duplicate Files

Oct 27, 2005

Over the years, I've saved a lot of backups of my files to various locations -- Hard Disks, Tape Backup, Zip Drives.Looking through the backups I see that I've backed up some files dozens of times. And some files only once or twice. Additionally, I've reorganized some files. So, for example, "auntbetty.jpg" might be in "My Pictures" in one backup, but in "My PicturesFamilyReunion 2003" in another. I would like to reformat my old backup media and begin to reuse it. But I don't want to accidently erase something that exists only on the backup. Is there a program that can scan all my media, figure out what files are duplicates, and automatically save only one version? Even if they are in different directories? What if there are multiple versions of the same file? Is there a utility that can "bundle" them together somehow, omitting exact duplicates but keeping together the old versions? All told, these backups comprise tens of thousands of files... no way I could go through them by hand!

Deleting Duplicate Files - Keeping Those Which Are Not Duplicated?

Aug 19, 2005

I'm running Windows XP, which has been fairly unstable as late, and thinking it might be because of an overful hard drive, I recently moved several gigabites of music etc. off my main drive (C and onto my second drive (F. Unfortunately, this now means that i'm wasting a fair bit of space on my F drive, as I already exported most-but-not-all of these files to my iTunes music files so I could put them easily onto my iPod. I'd like to free up this space again, but since the files are all in one large folder and not very well organised, it's gonna be a nightmare going through them all and just deleting the ones that are already in iTunes. Does anyone know a simple and effective way of deleting these duplicate files, but keeping ones that aren't duplicates where they are? I don't mind downloading freeware/shareware but I can't afford anything retail at the moment

Removed Duplicate Files - HP Screen Continuously Recycles

I ran program to i.d. multiple file copies and removed. Apparently I removed more than the extra copies. On next restart the HP screen comes up and continually recycles. I attempted to recover using the XP disc provided with the computer. About every 10th time I startup, the install screen appears and indicates that files are loading from the disc. Upon completion the "computer will restart/hit enter" screen appears, but the system shuts down. Called HP support, they told me to take to authorized service center "to change some settings".

Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware. Sorry forgot to mention other things tried. The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again.
