View 7 RepliesI'm running Windows XP, which has been fairly unstable as late, and thinking it might be because of an overful hard drive, I recently moved several gigabites of music etc. off my main drive (C and onto my second drive (F. Unfortunately, this now means that i'm wasting a fair bit of space on my F drive, as I already exported most-but-not-all of these files to my iTunes music files so I could put them easily onto my iPod. I'd like to free up this space again, but since the files are all in one large folder and not very well organised, it's gonna be a nightmare going through them all and just deleting the ones that are already in iTunes. Does anyone know a simple and effective way of deleting these duplicate files, but keeping ones that aren't duplicates where they are? I don't mind downloading freeware/shareware but I can't afford anything retail at the moment

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently had to restore my XP system, everything appeared to be working great. I have been cleaning out duplicate pictures and such on my computer. Today I went to a search of all pictures on my computer. From there I do a List and sort by size, after that I click on images so I can see if there are duplicates on my files. There is duplicates of everything however when i look into the file containing the pictures or documents it shows that both of the items are in the same location. When I go to that location there is only one of the items. Does anyone know why my search is showing duplicates of everything however they have the same path.
I am at a loss as to why everything is duplicated on my computer, especially because when you look where they are located they are in the exact same files.
I downloaded a registry checker and it had a thing in it I could see if I had any duplicate files....HOLY SHAMOLY, there are a ton of them, I am afraid to delete....see below, can someone advise on which is safe to delete? trying to clean up computer. Kindest regards, Christine....OH MY, there are so many I posted two sets and they are too long to post. Maybe just advise me on if I can delete one if there are 2?

Copied "My Documents" folder from thumb drive to the computer
.
Noticed several folders in "My Documents" were missing so thought I didn't back up to the thumb drive often enough so figured they were lost in the crash.
Wasl looking for a file and was unsure in which folder it might be located so did a "search" and found it in "My Documents". Went back to the "My Documents" folder and it wasn't there so did another search. This is what I discovered:
I went into Windows Explorer and found "My Documents"
I went into "My Computer" and then the "C" drive and found Documents and Settings, Gary, My Documents in the tree
Over the years, I've saved a lot of backups of my files to various locations -- Hard Disks, Tape Backup, Zip Drives.Looking through the backups I see that I've backed up some files dozens of times. And some files only once or twice. Additionally, I've reorganized some files. So, for example, "auntbetty.jpg" might be in "My Pictures" in one backup, but in "My PicturesFamilyReunion 2003" in another. I would like to reformat my old backup media and begin to reuse it. But I don't want to accidently erase something that exists only on the backup. Is there a program that can scan all my media, figure out what files are duplicates, and automatically save only one version? Even if they are in different directories? What if there are multiple versions of the same file? Is there a utility that can "bundle" them together somehow, omitting exact duplicates but keeping together the old versions? All told, these backups comprise tens of thousands of files... no way I could go through them by hand!

Just went in to My Documents looking for a photo & discovered that I have 2 of everything in My Documents. The second copy has the same name but with (1) after it. I've run Malewarebytes, Spybot, AVG. Adaware and nothing shows up. what happened and is there an easy way to get rid of all the duplicates? I have Windows XP on a Dell desk top....

I want to purge my system from "true" duplicate files. However, when I tried to do so in the past, I ran duplicate file finders, and deleted files which were supposedly duplicates. I then had to locate and reload a number of them because I began to have inconsistencies in my system. My system presently shows a large number of duplicates, but how can I be assured they are before I delete them?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI ran program to i.d. multiple file copies and removed. Apparently I removed more than the extra copies. On next restart the HP screen comes up and continually recycles. I attempted to recover using the XP disc provided with the computer. About every 10th time I startup, the install screen appears and indicates that files are loading from the disc. Upon completion the "computer will restart/hit enter" screen appears, but the system shuts down. Called HP support, they told me to take to authorized service center "to change some settings".

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to delete an old Windows file on one of my hard disks, but i never could because of the "access denied" error message. No matter what i did, they couldn't be deleted. So finally, i stumpled across a site that explained that the files need to have the right "ownership" to delete. So, i follow the instructions and set me as the owner, but it will only do that to one folder. I then have to go one by one and set the properties for each sub-folder seperatley, and there's hundreds of them. Is there any way to delete all of the files without regard to what user owns them? Or how can i make ALL files AND subfolders be set at once
