View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled XP on my primary hard drive. My computer had exhibited signs of a virus. I have had crashes while running games, freeze ups randomly, and poor performance in general. I have a Dell 4550 with a 2.56 Ghz Intel processor, a 30 Gig hard drive, an 80 gig hard drive, and 512 ram memory. I have Windows XP installed on the 30 gig H D. I use Zone Alarm for protection. I use Ad Aware also. I now get a notepad document named 5-notepad. It seems to be a bunch of random letters and symbols.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI’m having problems with my operating system. I want to install a fresh copy
of it. Can you tell me or show me step by step documentation as to how to
partition my drive (or refer me to documentation as to how to do so), install
a clean copy of WXP from my Dell OEM Windows XP SP1a CD into the new, empty
partition, update everything necessary on it (note, again, I received the WXP
SP2 CD from Microsoft by mail a few days ago), transfer any files from my current installed O.S. copy into this newly installed copy that I want to install, and then delete this current (then old, once I do this) copy of my O.S.? Are there any Microsoft documents about this? Would this be better than just reinstalling the O.S. over the one I currently have in my computer?
XP treats Zip files like folders, to stop this type 'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command prompt. To reverse it type 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.

So I went to reinstall Windows XP Pro Corporate Ed. and when I do is says that certain files like drmclien.dll was not copied correctly. There are other files that dont copy right either(most of them are .dll but some are .sys files). View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that is more irritating than serious. Every time Windows XP starts a window opens displaying the contents of the folder Program Files. It doesn't take more than a second or two to close the window but I find it frustrating that I am unable to prevent it from happening. I suspect that the answer lies somewhere in the Register but I have no idea where.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI am havinga very big problem with my PC. When I try to start it up normally, I get the following message; "Windows could not start because the following fileis missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair" When I try this, it opens repair console, but then I have to select OS, and when I do this, it just comes up with the previous error. If I try to reinstall it comes up with a blue screen error and crashes.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI woke up one day (hadn't installed anything in the meantime) and was unable to drag any icons or folders. My mouse won't "pick up" any of them, on my desktop or within a folder. I can drag program windows around, so I don't think it's an issue with my mouse. I thought maybe a recent Windows Update had messed it up, so I uninstalled the most recent one, but it didn't do anything.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to delete an old Windows file on one of my hard disks, but i never could because of the "access denied" error message. No matter what i did, they couldn't be deleted. So finally, i stumpled across a site that explained that the files need to have the right "ownership" to delete. So, i follow the instructions and set me as the owner, but it will only do that to one folder. I then have to go one by one and set the properties for each sub-folder seperatley, and there's hundreds of them. Is there any way to delete all of the files without regard to what user owns them? Or how can i make ALL files AND subfolders be set at once

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently figured out that some kind of virus is attached to my harddrive that is not picked up by any detection program. The files end in .exe and when using task manager, I delete the file and it generates a new file name with the same extention repeatedly. The CPU usage stays at 100% making it impossible for me to navigate the internet and play on line games. I did a file search, deleted the known files and rechecked task manager. They were still there. If I sit and delete them each time I turn on my computer it
takes me considerable amount of time and even then I may not get them all. I don't know what else to try to get my computer running better without a total reboot
