View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently had to restore my XP system, everything appeared to be working great. I have been cleaning out duplicate pictures and such on my computer. Today I went to a search of all pictures on my computer. From there I do a List and sort by size, after that I click on images so I can see if there are duplicates on my files. There is duplicates of everything however when i look into the file containing the pictures or documents it shows that both of the items are in the same location. When I go to that location there is only one of the items. Does anyone know why my search is showing duplicates of everything however they have the same path.
I am at a loss as to why everything is duplicated on my computer, especially because when you look where they are located they are in the exact same files.
I downloaded a registry checker and it had a thing in it I could see if I had any duplicate files....HOLY SHAMOLY, there are a ton of them, I am afraid to delete....see below, can someone advise on which is safe to delete? trying to clean up computer. Kindest regards, Christine....OH MY, there are so many I posted two sets and they are too long to post. Maybe just advise me on if I can delete one if there are 2?

Copied "My Documents" folder from thumb drive to the computer
.
Noticed several folders in "My Documents" were missing so thought I didn't back up to the thumb drive often enough so figured they were lost in the crash.
Wasl looking for a file and was unsure in which folder it might be located so did a "search" and found it in "My Documents". Went back to the "My Documents" folder and it wasn't there so did another search. This is what I discovered:
I went into Windows Explorer and found "My Documents"
I went into "My Computer" and then the "C" drive and found Documents and Settings, Gary, My Documents in the tree
Over the years, I've saved a lot of backups of my files to various locations -- Hard Disks, Tape Backup, Zip Drives.Looking through the backups I see that I've backed up some files dozens of times. And some files only once or twice. Additionally, I've reorganized some files. So, for example, "auntbetty.jpg" might be in "My Pictures" in one backup, but in "My PicturesFamilyReunion 2003" in another. I would like to reformat my old backup media and begin to reuse it. But I don't want to accidently erase something that exists only on the backup. Is there a program that can scan all my media, figure out what files are duplicates, and automatically save only one version? Even if they are in different directories? What if there are multiple versions of the same file? Is there a utility that can "bundle" them together somehow, omitting exact duplicates but keeping together the old versions? All told, these backups comprise tens of thousands of files... no way I could go through them by hand!

I seem to have loads of duplicates of music files listed in media player but am not sure if I actually have duplicates, if that makes sense?
is there anyway to eliminate duplicate files? i know i have to have a ton of them having reinstalled everything.
i would prefer not to use Norton......have had nothing but bad experiences with them.
is there any kind of system built in to XP i could run to try and locate and eliminate these files?
Just went in to My Documents looking for a photo & discovered that I have 2 of everything in My Documents. The second copy has the same name but with (1) after it. I've run Malewarebytes, Spybot, AVG. Adaware and nothing shows up. what happened and is there an easy way to get rid of all the duplicates? I have Windows XP on a Dell desk top....

I want to purge my system from "true" duplicate files. However, when I tried to do so in the past, I ran duplicate file finders, and deleted files which were supposedly duplicates. I then had to locate and reload a number of them because I began to have inconsistencies in my system. My system presently shows a large number of duplicates, but how can I be assured they are before I delete them?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows XP, which has been fairly unstable as late, and thinking it might be because of an overful hard drive, I recently moved several gigabites of music etc. off my main drive (C and onto my second drive (F. Unfortunately, this now means that i'm wasting a fair bit of space on my F drive, as I already exported most-but-not-all of these files to my iTunes music files so I could put them easily onto my iPod. I'd like to free up this space again, but since the files are all in one large folder and not very well organised, it's gonna be a nightmare going through them all and just deleting the ones that are already in iTunes. Does anyone know a simple and effective way of deleting these duplicate files, but keeping ones that aren't duplicates where they are? I don't mind downloading freeware/shareware but I can't afford anything retail at the moment
View 11 Replies View RelatedI ran program to i.d. multiple file copies and removed. Apparently I removed more than the extra copies. On next restart the HP screen comes up and continually recycles. I attempted to recover using the XP disc provided with the computer. About every 10th time I startup, the install screen appears and indicates that files are loading from the disc. Upon completion the "computer will restart/hit enter" screen appears, but the system shuts down. Called HP support, they told me to take to authorized service center "to change some settings".

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy dad was using my computer, and I think he did a "system restore" or a reboot. I'm not sure which one because I wasn't there when he did it. (Unfortunately...) I start up my computer and my login is no longer on the login screen. It automatically logs in & starts Windows XP. My desktop has changed to factory setting, there are all these different icons on my desktop now, and it basically looks like it did when I opened it out of the box 2 years ago. I go to My Documents and none of my files are there. Same with My Pictures and My Music. My dad said when he did the reboot/restore the data files would not be deleted. They weren't, and I found them under "My Computer> C> Documents and settings> Owner> Owner's Documents". All of my docs, pics, and music are there. My question is, how can I get my computer back the way it was before my dad messed it up? If I can't do that, how can I get all of my documents, pictures, and music under the appropriate files? I tried to do a "system restore" but it won't let me choose a restore date before my dad messed with it.

All my programs seem to be there, though. Can someone possibly suggest a way to retrieve my information? Note, I can't access my computer the standard way (ie., *not* in Safe Mode).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell M1710 XPS laptop, recently because of a power cut it failed to boot because of a corrupt file. I've re-installed windows XP (for some reason I was not able to boot from CD and repair), now obviously alot of the programs that are still on the hardrive will not open because they need to be re-installed. Unfortunatly I'm stuck on a ship with very little internet access and no CD's to re-install stuff with. I don't know if its possible to get these things working
Anyway my major concern is I've lost alot of my I'tunes music and photos that were on my hard-drive before. They seem to be still on the harddrive as I still have only 10% of the drive left as free space and yet when I double click on C: drive on my computer there shows only 32 gigs of stuff in folders there and I cannot find any of my music (program files seem to be unaffected, there still on the drive as normal even if im unable to run them). Is there anyway to find these missing folders/files that still seem to be on my harddrive but not visable.
I have a dell laptop with windows media center installed, as you know they come with a seperate partition for the backup files. For me backup files are not necessary, so I deleted the contents then installed WOW in its spot. Then later on I decided to merge this partition using partition magic. While merging my computer crashed. My C: drive is saying that it has the contents of the old partition, but it is not accessible or visible. I tried using partition magics drive mapper to make these files go into c: but it did nothing.

I get the same response when I enter the file name. I've battled this driver problem for two days, from installation disk drivers not compatable, to not finding downloaded drivers. View 5 Replies View RelatedAlrite, ive got an emachines notebook running xp home on it. We bought it from best buy, and i guess they registered the computer to a 'valued customer' and its really annoying. Idk how the user name stuff works, but i think a while ago(not 100% positive cuz it was like 2 years ago) when we first got the computer i changed the admin 'valued customer' name to my name. but the 'my documents' folder defaulted to 'c:/documents and settings/valued customer' still. i fixed it by making a folder on c: with my name and made that folder the target location for the My Documents folder.
