I am trying to locate and transfer pst files from a computer that crashed - - reallly crashed. What I am looking for are the contacts (addresses) and the calander that iI used in Outlook. I can still access a limited amount of data from the old laptop, but can't seem to find the pst files.

I've been thinking about reformating the HD and reinstalling XP Pro. 2 questions: 1st is; if I back up my HD and then do a restore after reinstalling the os, won't I just restore the glitches I'm trying to get rid of? 2nd question; Since I've never done a reinstall and restore; will all my programs be restored just as if they have been installed (Drivers, programs, etc.); or do I have to reinstall all my programs and then do a restore so I get all the data that changed after they were installed?

The secondary machine, which was replaced by the primary some 8 months ago, is of much lesser spec but may have either a CD R/W or a Floppy Disk drive inserted into the media bay, but not both at the same time. Both machines are running Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates and patches installed.

I had been running my computer just as the default 'Administrator' for awhile and finally decided that I would set up an account and rename my computer to something meaningful. I set up a new administrator account, but now all the files, etc that I had been using are gone. Are they really gone, or can I just not see them for some reason? There was no warning about files being deleted, etc, but after the reboot it's as if I just took the machine out of the box. Only the software is still visible, none of the files that I had saved to the hard drive. I am running Windows XP. I tried system restore, but after running it says that nothing has changed since the restore point from several days ago. Can anyone help with this? It seems surprising that all of this info would be automatically deleted, but I sure can't find it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI having trouble opening data files such as Word or Lotus 123. They eventually do open but it take forever (probably 20 seconds). Sometimes they open fast but most of the times I have this long delay. Also printing files is a another task that takes a long time. It seems that the printer isn't recoginzed for at least 15 seconds. I am running on a local network using a Linksys router and also am sharing the printer through a computer on the network with a computer that is running Windows 98SE.

I do not remember how I reinstalled it but I somehow forgot to save a few data files. I would like to have kept. Does anyone know of any utilities including freeware and non freeware to try to scan the hard disk and recover the files in case they still exist and the problem is that they are just not indexed by the file system?

I have used windows 98 and currently use 2000 and have the same problem. I have tried an external hard drive and saved the file and then disconnected the USB cable and the same thing happens next time i connect it. I have formatted hard drive a couple of times and problem reoccurred both times.

After first restart it told me that there are problems with my D disk's file structure (Windows installation as default - on C disk). I let Windows to check and repair problems on D disk. It took about 30 mins. After done "fixing", windows restarted once more. And what i saw after, was a blank D disk. Almost 250GB of photos, documents, home-made movies and other unrecoverable priceless data were lost... A few hours later, when I calmed down, I've started to download and try variuos file recovery software. But none of it helped me to recover at least one lost file. After week of trying i gave up. I've tried variuos Windows apps, live CDs with recovery tools, Linux apps. None of those helped... So maybe someone has a solution for me, couse I don't know what to try anymore?

My mum wants to use the word processor now and then but the printer has broken and she would rather not buy another; partly because drivers may be an issue and partly becuase I have unused retail copies of Windows ME and 2000 that a couple of mates donated and can print off at my Dad's house.The issue with 98 is that I want to be using USB sticks when necessary to transfer word documents over to my Dad's computer running XP to print but 98 does not have the necessary drivers and I think it is impossible to get any; from what I understand that what 98 SE was for.

About a week ago my computer was degenerating to such a condition that it would no longer start up properly: it would not load some of the host process properly at start up and the desk top would not appear. The system would hang up, and the only way I could access files was in safe mode.So I decided to do a Full System Recovery and allow the computer to restore itself to some sort of usable condition. Upon completing the initial set up I was presented with, I pressed FINISH and the system froze again, refusing to load the desktop.
So, perhaps foolishly, I attempted a System Recovery from the Recovery DVDs the computer had prompted me to make a while ago, as well as a few more System Restores and Recoveries
My computer started deleting files. A DOS window popped up and began systematically deleting programs and files. I was able to stop it by turning off the computer. When I turned on the computer again the random deleting had stopped, but I had lost my music files and my mail files. If this wasn't a virus, what else could cause this to happen?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy dad was using my computer, and I think he did a "system restore" or a reboot. I'm not sure which one because I wasn't there when he did it. (Unfortunately...) I start up my computer and my login is no longer on the login screen. It automatically logs in & starts Windows XP. My desktop has changed to factory setting, there are all these different icons on my desktop now, and it basically looks like it did when I opened it out of the box 2 years ago. I go to My Documents and none of my files are there. Same with My Pictures and My Music. My dad said when he did the reboot/restore the data files would not be deleted. They weren't, and I found them under "My Computer> C> Documents and settings> Owner> Owner's Documents". All of my docs, pics, and music are there. My question is, how can I get my computer back the way it was before my dad messed it up? If I can't do that, how can I get all of my documents, pictures, and music under the appropriate files? I tried to do a "system restore" but it won't let me choose a restore date before my dad messed with it.

However, my files don't appear to be there when I boot in Safe Mode and the Desktop arrangement definitely does not look like what I had. All my programs seem to be there, though.Can someone possibly suggest a way to retrieve my information? Note, I can't access my computer the standard way (ie., *not* in Safe Mode).

I've re-installed windows XP (for some reason I was not able to boot from CD and repair), now obviously alot of the programs that are still on the hardrive will not open because they need to be re-installed. Unfortunatly I'm stuck on a ship with very little internet access and no CD's to re-install stuff with. I don't know if its possible to get these things working
Anyway my major concern is I've lost alot of my I'tunes music and photos that were on my hard-drive before. They seem to be still on the harddrive as I still have only 10% of the drive left as free space and yet when I double click on C: drive on my computer there shows only 32 gigs of stuff in folders there and I cannot find any of my music (program files seem to be unaffected, there still on the drive as normal even if im unable to run them). Is there anyway to find these missing folders/files that still seem to be on my harddrive but not visable.
I have a dell laptop with windows media center installed, as you know they come with a seperate partition for the backup files. For me backup files are not necessary, so I deleted the contents then installed WOW in its spot. Then later on I decided to merge this partition using partition magic. While merging my computer crashed. My C: drive is saying that it has the contents of the old partition, but it is not accessible or visible. I tried using partition magics drive mapper to make these files go into c: but it did nothing.

When I get to Hardware Wizard Search and Install options, I type in C:Program (This is where I've downloaded drivers) an error msg. states that there is no device info in this location. I get the same response when I enter the file name. I've battled this driver problem for two days, from installation disk drivers not compatable, to not finding downloaded drivers. Any solutions would be greatly recieved.
