My Hp DV5000 was left on all night and when I came in to work a blue screen was up with the HP background and an error message saying It cannot find the files weblogon I clicked ok and then it popped up and siad it is missing LSSAS files.I can somewhat start it in the safe mode but it kicks it off after a while.

I used AVG and scanned the whole comp for virus's and such but the message will not go away. (where box is actually a graphic rectangle charater)Second error message: Could not load or run 'box,box,box...' in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry. This happens every time I start and I can click through to continue - but obviously something's off and I'd like to fix it. Though I'm not crazy about editing the registry, I'd do that to fix the problem, but I don't know what to search for.

In the past few days, all of my jpg files in My Pictures have suddenly shown up on Display Properties-Desktop (in other words, instead of just the desktop background pictures that came with my Dell pc, suddenly all my personal pics are in the desktop backgrounds scroll list as well). How do I keep my jpgs, but eliminate them from the desktop backgrounds scroll list? (Display Properties-Desktop takes a looong tme to open now, because there are so many files in it). The same thing has happened recently on my wife's pc, also running XP.

Option is to click on OK, but right after message appears it will open the page and I can open all the other net links normally, but not internal pages until message is gone. I can't right click on a jpg and set it as background and it wont detect any of the wallpapers i have in my pictures folder like it used to. The only wallpapers it will use are the default windows wallpapers or anything i set to wallpaper by right clicking on an image online. As for my other problem, I can't get files to open with the correct program. I know i can set a file type to always open with a certain prgram, but that isnt working. Example: I have a .max file which should open in 3ds max. Instead it opens in nothing and stay a blank file with no icon. I can still open it by opening up the program and opening it from there, but it's annoying. My winamp play lists also all seem to want to open in windows media player no matter how many time i tell them to always open in winamp.
I've noticed another problem after restarting that I don't normally have. When I log in i get this Preparing to Install. Please wait while windows find 'new copy' ERROR 1706. No valid source could be found for this product NewCopy. The windows installer can not continue.(I press ok)....
Can someone tell me why, when I open a notepad file, whether from notepad or from Start Documents or what have you, I always get an error message: "Windows cannot find [file locationfilename.txt]. Make sure you type the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." However, the file does open in notepad behind this error message and I am able to view it, edit it, etc.
I would like this error message not to appear every time (it is really just an annoyance to cancel it every time but after a couple of years I am tired of it) so I tried to find this answer in the archives but to no avail. However, I saw that it was recommended by more than one tech guy (or gal) to save a "hijack this" file in notepad, so I followed the instructions and did that just after my latest error message... The "hijack this" copy of the notepad file follows, and if you see anything else that I should make note of please let me know....
My system totally crashed. I reformatted the drive and reinstall XP. Well, everything seems to be going along just fine until I get to 70% finished with copying installation files and I get message after message saying that the files cannot be copied.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy dad was using my computer, and I think he did a "system restore" or a reboot. I'm not sure which one because I wasn't there when he did it. (Unfortunately...) I start up my computer and my login is no longer on the login screen. It automatically logs in & starts Windows XP. My desktop has changed to factory setting, there are all these different icons on my desktop now, and it basically looks like it did when I opened it out of the box 2 years ago. I go to My Documents and none of my files are there. Same with My Pictures and My Music. My dad said when he did the reboot/restore the data files would not be deleted. They weren't, and I found them under "My Computer> C> Documents and settings> Owner> Owner's Documents". All of my docs, pics, and music are there. My question is, how can I get my computer back the way it was before my dad messed it up? If I can't do that, how can I get all of my documents, pictures, and music under the appropriate files? I tried to do a "system restore" but it won't let me choose a restore date before my dad messed with it.

However, my files don't appear to be there when I boot in Safe Mode and the Desktop arrangement definitely does not look like what I had. All my programs seem to be there, though.Can someone possibly suggest a way to retrieve my information? Note, I can't access my computer the standard way (ie., *not* in Safe Mode).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell M1710 XPS laptop, recently because of a power cut it failed to boot because of a corrupt file. I've re-installed windows XP (for some reason I was not able to boot from CD and repair), now obviously alot of the programs that are still on the hardrive will not open because they need to be re-installed. Unfortunatly I'm stuck on a ship with very little internet access and no CD's to re-install stuff with. I don't know if its possible to get these things working
Anyway my major concern is I've lost alot of my I'tunes music and photos that were on my hard-drive before. They seem to be still on the harddrive as I still have only 10% of the drive left as free space and yet when I double click on C: drive on my computer there shows only 32 gigs of stuff in folders there and I cannot find any of my music (program files seem to be unaffected, there still on the drive as normal even if im unable to run them). Is there anyway to find these missing folders/files that still seem to be on my harddrive but not visable.
I have a dell laptop with windows media center installed, as you know they come with a seperate partition for the backup files. For me backup files are not necessary, so I deleted the contents then installed WOW in its spot. Then later on I decided to merge this partition using partition magic. While merging my computer crashed. My C: drive is saying that it has the contents of the old partition, but it is not accessible or visible. I tried using partition magics drive mapper to make these files go into c: but it did nothing.

When I get to Hardware Wizard Search and Install options, I type in C:Program (This is where I've downloaded drivers) an error msg. states that there is no device info in this location. I get the same response when I enter the file name. I've battled this driver problem for two days, from installation disk drivers not compatable, to not finding downloaded drivers.
