When creating system restore points, Windows (XP Pro) saves copies of the registry. (I think Windows keeps backups of the registry even if System Restore isn't enabled.) I'd like to find all copies of the registry (besides the active one, of course) and erase them. I'd be grateful for guidance.

I would like to simply delete this file since it's been a few months since I made the backup, and I'm not experiencing any problems with my registry. Is it safe to delete this backup?

However on partitioning and formating this HD (using Win 98 / SE,FDISK.Exe file), the total space available is only 78,109,888 bytes (split in to 3 parts). On another computer, made by a different company and with almost similar configuration, I have a Maxtor brand 80 GB HD and on partitioning and formatting, it had 80, 009, 888 bytes available (that is 1.9 GB more)This HD also has 3 partitions.It seems the HP's Samsung HD has a hidden partition. I tried to find it with FDSIK.EXE and also with Partition Magic (version 8.2) and Partition Manager (version 5.5), but was unsuccessful.Is there any other Partition related software, which can show a hidden partition and also be able to delete the same (without damaging the C~ partition)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have folders on a USB stick, which I ahve tried deleting in the past. Now inside each folder is one file titled U¬U¬SWIN.4.1 - 0KB each. When i click on delete an error message appears saying: "Cannot delete U¬U¬SWIN.4: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name." I can still add files to the USB, but I it looks like it's full with folders and looks messy. It's just really annoying.

I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

The last time I tried to do a backup, I got an error message, "You have either run out of space or the backup (.bkf) is too large for this disk. Note: if this disk is formatted with Fat 32 , the maximum possible size for the is 4GB." My external disk is 75GB with 45GB free. It is formatted in NTFS. I did a clean up and defragged the disk and get the same error when I try to backup. Is this an indication of a problem with the external hard disk or a problem with the XP backup utility

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a very large, corrupt disc image on my hard drive that I want to delete, but every time I try to delete it Windows displays the message "Cannot delete 'filename': it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." The disc image is not mounted with any program, and hasn't been for some time. I tried aborting random processes that I thought might have something to do with the file, as well as restarting. No matter what I do, there seems to be something using the file. Are there any tricks to getting around this so I can delete it? Can I check, somehow, to see what program is using it?

This applies to programs, icons, photos, documents , folders etc - I cannot get to any of my work to back it up. I have tried Stinger -F-Force and W32.Blackmal@mm Removal Tools. Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware. Sorry forgot to mention other things tried. The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again. There is no way I can get to any of my folders or files to burn to a CD as backup without the Confirm Delete message.

The files and folders that I am addressing are: C:WINDOWSTEMP*.* *.OLD *.CHK *.BAK ~*.* _*.* and MSCREATE.DIRI have managed to clean all but one, which is _*.* When I run the search, I get the result of 144 files. I click on edit, select all, then file, delete. I receive the following error "cannot delete file: Cannot read the source file or disk" (please view screen shot). When I right click, I have no delete option, just "open containing folder, copy, and extract. (please view screen shot). I have run AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, and Avg Free. I also have CCleaner, Easy Clean which I have run. I have also used "Move On Boot" by putting the file path in the MOB window and try to have MOB delete the file. MOB says the file will be removed on the next boot.

Prior to doing anything else with that computer I would like to do a backup ( preferably complete ) on to a DVD(s) that will simplify an instillation if I ever end up having to reformat. If something happens down the road I would just like to install XP and then use my backup to restore it to what I have today.
