Truncated Dialog Boxes - Change Settings To Restore?
Aug 8, 2005
I am finding that many of the dialog boxes, which used to be normal, now display truncated. That is, portions of them, including various command buttons do not display, or only parts of the command buttons display. I'm sure I changed a setting somewhere to cause this, but I can't figure out what setting(s) will restore them to normal.
I have been in the hospital and upon arriving home, I notice that when I click on Favorites in the menu bar (not the standard buttons bar)FILE-EDIT-VIEW-Favorites-TOOLS-HELP)I now get a truncated Favorites menu. I hate truncated menus. Can someone direct me to where I can change this back to the way it was?
I have just switched from dialup to high speed cable and am now using Microsoft Internet Explorer to browse. Many sites which I previously viewed without a problem on AOL now contain one or more small squares with a red "x" instead of the usual picture or graphic. How can I get rid of the boxes and restore the graphics?
How do I do a restore to factory settings? The only thing I have been able to find is a system restore to an earlier date, could someone help me please?
Suddenlly I have to enter my UserID and password on every site I frequent? This happened a week or so ago and it's a pain. Does this have something to do with cookies? If so, how do I change the settings so this doesn't happen?
When I download a file, the Download pop-box doesn't show the file, or, it downloads it somewhere other than the Download folder on my Desktop. How do I fix this?
What are the best settings for System Restore? I am running Windows XP and the minimum is 200mb and the maximum is 8478mb .. I'm not sure if this is correct, but I read somewhere that the highest setting on SR eats a lot of memory and I dont have that much (512) I am getting virtual low minimum memory messages. (I have this set at min 768 and max 1024) So would turning the setting down on SR work with increasing my virtual memory?
I am trying to set up a dialup connection with xp pro. The modem is on com3 but the connection wizzard defaults to com1. I can not find how to change the settings for the dial up connection. My isp is on strike so their tech support could not help.
Three days ago I boot up my PC and found something strange. The appearance was "set" as Classic. Ok, so far it didn't bother me. When I tried to change it back, I DID NOT HAVE THE OPTION! What disturbed me the most was that I had no internet connection. I checked the internet properties and my network settings were in blank. I checked the moden, and the "DSL" light was off. I don't want to imagine I have to reinstall Windows (XP); I've installed some software I (bought) downloaded and don't want to lose it. What can be wrong with my PC? I remember last time I turn it off was fine.
I've seen the option before, but i can't seem to find it now. Where do I go to edit things like "ask for password when returning from hibernate" and things like that? Also does any know if you can change the slide show settings (like the length of time of the slides)? if so where?
I think all of this started after I downloaded some windows updates, and it stopped making anything on my quick launch menu to work. So I deleted most of them, but kept show desktop and outlook express. I fiddled with the toolbar settings (address, links, windows media player etc.)and now I've lost my quick launch option entirely! everytime I try to check that toolbar, it closes the menu and nothing happens. How do I get quick launch back?
I installed XP Pro and wiped out home... Now I'm having driver issues (they're not working with new OS) and I want to restore my computer to the way it was when I got it. Here's the problem, when I try to use my restore CD's they won't work because I have XP Pro on there .
I have a bunch of custom system DSNs set up in my ODBC administrator in Windows XP Pro. I want to transfer these DSNs to a new computer without having to input them all manually. Is there an easy way to back these settings up and then restore them onto my new computer? I tried using the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" but it doesn't seem to save these settings.
I need to use a proxy server at work but not at home. I would love an icon on the desktop that I could click when I arrive at work that would start IE and Firefox, change their proxy settings to 'On' and then close the programs. Similarly, when I get home, I would like to click another icon to do the reverse.
My friend installed a video game on his HP desktop (w/Windows XP) and changed the resolution settings to some odd selection that was 756x??? - something I had never seen before. Every time he loaded the game, it was illegible. In trying to change the display settings to make them compatible with the game, he chose this odd resolution (which was now available for some reason) for the desktop display settings, and now nothing can be read on the screen.
My friend's computer used to shut down completely when she pressed Start/Shut down, and she was using Windows 98. Now she is using Windows XP Home Ed., a message comes up: "It is now safe to turn off your computer" How can we get rid of that message so that the computer will shut down completely again by itself like it used to?
Is there a setting that we can change somewhere please? She would like to be able to use Start/Shut Down and the computer would shut completely down without any furhter steps.

I had a file that I could not open in order to read (CompositeLabProWindows). I hastily went to properties in change the file to a messenger file. The file that open and I was able to read the file how ever, an order for the file to work properly I should have been left alone and not tampered with. The men how many times I download the program is still opens up in Windows messenger. My problem is that I need to restore it back to the way it was prior, and remove that the fault mechanism that all some unknown files open up the messenger.
whenever I try to apply a change to my theme settings, the settings never save. I try to choose the Windows XP theme. When I apply it, it reverts back to the Modified Theme setting.
I am trying to increase my virtual memory and am doing so the way I am supposed to by running "control sysdm.cpl" and going to the appropriate steps and then restarting my computer. What is happening, though, is when I go back to it my settings are saved in the "custom sized" places as the new values I put in, but the "currently allocated" amount doesn't change at all. Shouldn't the currently allocated amount change to the minimum I designate in the custom allocation box?Right now, the only way to get my graphics program to work faster is by overloading my memory so that Windows will automatically increase the virtual memory. Why don't my custom settings change anything?
Just one very quick and propably simple question. somehow i managed to change a setting somewhere that has made all the files on my computer have the file type e.g. .jpg or .bmp at the end of every file name, how can i change this so it goes back to normall.for example i have; picture.jpg istead of just picture as the file name
The settings button is greyed out. How can I fix this? Also, where can I get a USB driver? Just USB driver, modem is connected by the USB cable and sometimes I can hear this sound in winXP that its disconnected and connected again(the sound you get when you unplug/plug in a USB device). After a while of plugging /unplugging, my internet connection just disappears. The modem is working properly, I think theres something wrong with the USB driver or something.I plugged in my printer(also USB) and nothing happens, everything that uses USB doesn't work at all.

On the windows login screen, right below my login name, there is a little note that says how many new mail messages I have- This however was set up by my ex-boyfriend under his hotmail account. I'd like to change it to one of my accounts if possible, (I primarily use a university based webmail account), and if I can't change it to anything but hotmail or msn then I would like to remove it.
I haven't been able to figure out where to find this setting.
two new computers a router and networked the home. I have the host computer and my children are each on wireless as clients. Both children can access internet, but only 1 can access printer. I actually figured out the problem that's huge as I'm a network idiot. My son's computer (can't use printer) is using my old computer with MY name on it. I am on the new computer with MY name on it. So when he tries to access the printer it doesn't know where to go. I have windows xp HOME and from what I see I can't change the name on his computer the folder immediately under documents & settings). I followed instructions to copy from one folder to another (ie, Mine to his) using a 3rd administrator account. I could copy any account but mine.
