My PC is lousy with viruses etc. I scanned with HijackThis, but I don't understand the results. It does not automatically fix problem files, I must choose what to remove. I'm positive that I'm going to remove something vital.

I've run SpySweeper and a couple others and have been unable to turn either one up. Nor can I locate them in Google. My questions are, how can I get them off my sys.

I have XP and I am tired of my homepage being taken over by a weird search site and free porn loaded up in my IE favorites section (even after I delete them). I ran spybot and ad-aware in safe mode. It cleaned out alot of junk, but what I mentioned is still there. I am using the XP firewall that came with the computer. So do I need to go and buy a spyware program and a firewall. The free stuff isn't working. And will this even fix the problem?

It all started when i got a message from my nortons internet security that winlogon.exe was trying to contact the internet.I ran hijckthis, i ran spybot, i ran ad-aware. fixed items i thought needed to be fixed. I don't know if it was before or after all this, but i began getting pop ups from sites i know do not have pop ups, like my own. ran all the programs again. the same offenders keep popping up... i have posted my logs on this site but sadly no one had responded.anyway, now every time i restart my computer, I get a dll error. every time it is a different dll. also, when on for an extended amount of time, say overnight, i lose internet connectivity, even though my cable modem is showing that there is lots of activity going on.can anyone givew me a clue what's going on, or where i can begin looking? should i just scrap it all and reformat my computer?

"Windows could not start because the following file is either missing or corrupt. windowssystem32configsystem You can attempt to repair this file by running windows setup using the originally setup CD-ROM. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair". What should I do. The computer won't even start up. I don't know if he is running a bootleg version of windows or not. And his setup disk doesn't seem to help. keep from wiping his hard drive.
View 12 Replies View RelatedFor some reason my XP machine shows my CPU running at 100% all the time and when I look at the processes running these spike to 99%, but they never stay at 99% for more than a second: winlogon.exe, rundll32.exe, explorer.exe, system idle process. I just reinstalled XP to fix another issue and with just the operating system installed and no programs open it started doing this on the first bootup from the reinstallation. Before I reinstalled XP, this problem was happening and I ran every adware/spyware scanner I could get my hands, every virus scan and disable any funky looking programs in the startup. All this did not resolve the issue. Could this possibly be a hardware issue, cpu problem?

Just before it started I changed the desktop appearence on my display settings. All of this software (along with Windows) is kept updated and none of the software mentioned has found anything (except for the occasional tracking cookie) wrong with my computer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThere are two excellent spyware removal apps available and they are both FREE so there is no reason to not use them regularly. The two best apps there are for removing spyware are SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU USE BOTH OF THESE APPS SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES AND VICE VERSA, YOU ARE NOT SAFE USING JUST ONE OF THEM. There is one other app that I HIGHLY recommend is for spyware prevention, SpywareBlaster. This app sets certain registry entries that prevent spyware from ever installing, it DOES NOT run in the background using any resources, you just set it and forget it. Once you have installed these three MUST HAVE apps you then need to update them and keep them up to date. I would recommend checking for updates weekly, it’s just like your antivirus app, you need to stay protected from the latest spyware out there. To update SpyBot just open the app from your start menu (use the advanced mode option) and select “search for updates” it will then show you what updates are available for download, always install all the updates. Another feature that SpyBot has is called “Immunize”, you will see an icon for it. Select the icon and under “Permanent Internet Explorer Immunity” select “Immunize” this works in the same way as SpywareBlaster in blocking new spyware. It also gives you the option of locking your hosts file against hijackers, I highly recommend using this option as well. To update Ad Aware just open it and select “Check for updates now”. For SpywareBlaster it is mostly the same, open it up and select “Check for updates” once you update this you then must select “select all” and then “Protect against checked items” so that the updates you just did take effect. Anything these apps find is spyware and should be removed, if you choose not to remove what is found then you have no one to blame if your pc crashes due to spyware or your privacy is invaded (including these companies stealing your credit card number and identity

View 3 Replies View Relatedtoday i was attacked with more than 20 trojans i had windows virus crap up and that didnt do much. i had avg running thank god it was scanning and found 13 trojans already in my comp and intercepted another 8 i dont know what i did to bring that all down on me. a website was opening it self, poping up whenever it was called "internet speed moniter" or something like that i think thats the source tho im not sure. my comp shut down by it self then i came back to find it had installed its program on my comp without my permission and several other new folders were in my programs files folder. well i figured just whipe the hard drive and start over clean..i put my xp disk in and attempted to do so. but i was over my head.i dont know how and need some assistance.

This morning, I turned on the computer and saw that two fake virus protections "VirusResponse Lab 2009" and "Windows Antivirus 2008" have been invading my desktop. I keep exiting them all out, but they just keep coming back. There were approximately 50 Trojans, indeed, now I have used both XoftSpySE to delete WAV 2008 and used Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to delete VirusResponse Lab 2008 (I THINK). Next thing: After they have not been popping up anymore (hopefully), on the bottom right corner where the time shows, it says "VIRUS ALERT!" I go to Start and notice I cannot access My Documents, Control Panel, Recent Documents, and "All Programs." They are gone, except some programs listed in the front and Shut Down only. I also see that when I open "My Computer", there is no "C" Drive showing. I can't access that drive even though I'm using it. Now, there is a window from "Windows Security Alert" popping up telling me to "Enable Protection", the option with "Keep Blocking" and "Unblock". I don't know if I should choose "Enable Protection" because IE keeps opening and it's making my computer slow.

I ran Avast, adaware spybot and eliminated the mal ware. Still no internet. Next I went to services and changed the apporiate settings that had been turned off and wow internet sort off. I can access some sites but not all. I was able to update to service pack 2 and do all of the updates.

My record number is 105 viruses when doing a full system scan with the full paid version and updated version of Norton anti-virus 2004! I was surprised that i had that many viruses when i had been running norton for 3 or 4 months running full system scans once a week and a quick scan once everyday. I later then uninstalled norton becuase my computer was going too slow and installed avast antivirus. The first scan that i ran with avast as soon as i installed it found another 24 viruses. That is a total of 129 viruses.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy laptop, a Toshiba, running XP Home, became infected and it had Norton's pre-installed [she never updated it].It barely booted and eventually I uninstalled it and have since ran a MULTITUDE of anti virus apps in an attempt to clean the poor thing: Panda, AVG, McAfee, they all did half a job and sometimes even gave up. Avast and Spybot seem to have done the trick... or... have they? The laptop is still snoozing and crashing everytime I open a browser. I don't know what to do.
