Hangs At Setup Is Inspecting Computers Hardware Configuration
May 18, 2010While trying to install Windows XP, my computer hangs at the “Please wait, setup is inspecting your computer’s hardware configuration” screen. This happens while trying to install either Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro (both of which are original CDs), as well as a slipstreamed sp3 copy of XP. So I installing XP on an older computer I have and then put that hard drive back into the computer with the trouble, turned the system on and it hangs at either the black screen or at the F8 boot options screen when I press the F8 key.I checked the connections, tried stripping the computer hardware down to just a several year old CD / DVD drive, graphics card, 1 hard drive, and floppy. When that gave the same results, I tried every hardware arrangement I could think of; several different hard drives IDE and SATA (internal) ranging from 40GB’s to 500GB’s, slave / master / cable / select and the wire or port selection, 2 DVD drives (internal / external), together and in combinations for both the hard dives and the DVD drives, pulling out or unplugging all other connections (Ethernet, USB, TV-card, and floppy drive), and changed the placement and number of memory sticks. I also changed the monitors and all of this gave the same results.
I played with various settings of the main board jumpers and from within CMOS. I under clocked and over clocked the memory, CPU, and north bridge as well as changing the voltage, individually and together; manually and automatically. I set the optimized defaults and reset the Bios, both from within the CMOS and pulling the plug or with the jumper. I enabled everything and disabled everything that I could get away with. Even run the boot up Virus scan utility. Some of these would not let the system post properly, however the those that would allow me to post gave my the same system hanging problems with XP.With the exception of adding a couple of hard drives, changing out a DVD drive, adding a couple of USB devices, different OS’s and some CMOS settings; the system is the same as when it used to run XP Pro fine about a little over a year ago. Though I do remember that XP was fussy about starting up with trying to over clock the CPU to anything with the memory running at stock settings and so I was left with having to use the automatic settings (which I used the lite or medium settings). As for the other OS’s, I am currently running Windows 7rc (which runs fine). I’ve ran MSDOS 6.22 (via bootable CD), Ubuntu Linux v10.04, and Mandrake Linux (I believe v6. something). All of these installed and ran fine. However Windows 95, Windows 95 OEM, Windows 98, and the Windows 98 sp2 installation CD’s just went to black screen and froze. On some site sometime ago, I heard that you will sometimes run into conflicts if the north bridge chipset is from an Opposing graphics vendor than the Graphics Card that you are using which is the case in my system, an ATI chipset with an nVidia Video Card. Though I have no idea that is source of my problem or not and the only other video card that my system I think will take is an old Voodoo3 or 4, 3d Card.

Nov 20, 2007So i just recently bought a new motherboard/cpu/memory/case.Then i took the 2 hard drives/graphics card out of my old machine.This machine is running fine. I'm now trying to set up my old motherboard/computer with an old hard drive i have.First, i had an 80 conductor problem, but i bought 2 brand new IDE cables.Now, when i try to install windows. it freezes on the screen "Setup is inspecting your current hardware configuration."I've tried a couple hard drives now. but they are all old.

Aug 25, 2008I have used the search facility to try and find a result to this problem but alas to no avail.I have had XP pro in this desktop before so I know it's compatible. Recently I decided to upgrade to Vista but decided that it wasn't for me and have tried to downgrade back to XP.On first try with XP pro setup bootdisk I got by said problem and got to the format/partition bit but got error message saying unable to load operating system half way through install. I figured it could be because i didn't set up boot in bios properly using bootup selector instead and upon restart during install it tried to boot from hd.
So restarted and sorted bios selection out but now get this wierd problem, being on ANY install disk of XP (I have a few) it jams after "setup is inspecting your computers hardware" i.e. blank screen and nothing happening. I've tried unplugging everything and leaving only cd-rom, hard-drive and monitor/keyboard/gfx card and mouse connected but all to no avail.The drive I'm trying to install to is a samsung 150gb hard drive partitioned to 20gb and 130gb respectively with data still on the 130gb section that i'd like to keep.The most interesting thing is that the Vista disk that I have installs fine without problem which is how I'm writing this.

Jul 6, 2010I have been having problems when i tried reverting from windows 7 back to Windows XP Home Edition. At first i was able to get to windows setup (Blue screen) when i had the disc and partitioned to install the XP Disc. The computer restarted and i get to "press any key to continue (with the disc)" and i do so and it says "set up is inspecting your computers hardware" and then screen turns black and nothing appears. When i take the disc out it says "Error Loading Operating System". I can't really do much of anything now. Only screen i can get to is f1 to the "bios setup utility".I have an HP a450n.. Really need help i been wanting to use XP again because windows 7 annoyed me because it lagged my games. it has ran windows xp before and worked very good as well as for the games.

Aug 10, 2005For some reason my XP machine shows my CPU running at 100% all the time and when I look at the processes running these spike to 99%, but they never stay at 99% for more than a second: winlogon.exe, rundll32.exe, explorer.exe, system idle process. I just reinstalled XP to fix another issue and with just the operating system installed and no programs open it started doing this on the first bootup from the reinstallation. Before I reinstalled XP, this problem was happening and I ran every adware/spyware scanner I could get my hands, every virus scan and disable any funky looking programs in the startup. All this did not resolve the issue. Could this possibly be a hardware issue, cpu problem?

It has a error when turned on stating a disk error occured. press ctrl alt del to restart but of course when you press those keys it keeps giving you the same message. Oct 27, 2007I"m running WinXP SP2 Home. Hardware is 2.0 Celeron, 1 gig Ram, 64MB Nvidia Video Card, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, HD's are 250GIG Western Digital with 4 partitions and 27% free on the XP Boot and 200GIG Western Digital with 2 Partitions. I have a Lite-On DVD +-R/RW drive and a 3.5 floppy. I am setup with a Duel-Boot configuration Win 98/XP. I do not have a paging file.
My problem occures after I hit enter for the Select Operating System page. I Hit enter, Win XP proceeds to load. After I hit enter and Windows loads the blue welcome screen 1 minute has passed. I hear the Welcome Audio music, however blue welcome screen is still there for 30 more seconds. Next is my picture that I have as my background that is shown without icons for 1minute 21seconds. Windows now displays my icons on my desktop. the icons blink at minute 4. after 4 minutes and 51 seconds I am able to use my computer. At bootup I only have 43 programs running and 357MB of the 1 gig ram taken.
What I have done:
1) I have started in safe mode and defraged my PC, 0% frag on all partitions except a drive that isn't currently plugged in and it was 1% because it's my backup drive (not worried about that 1%)
2)Removing all connected Componets and rebooted, same problem.
3) I have tried using msconfig.exe and setting the startup selection as Normal- it's defaulted to Selective. Tried reducing my startup programs. ....
Start I Tunes Error Message - Audio Configuration Doesn't Work Properly
May 15, 2007i'm using window's xp. whenever i start my i-tunes program, i get an error message telling me "i-tunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. audio/video lpayback may not work properly." at this point, i no songs will play, and the sound doesn't come through the speakers when i'm watching any videos on the web either. Every once and a while, my monitor will flicker, then power down, leaving me with no choice but to manually shut the pc down. in addition, the desktop and browser graphics have begun to deteriorate. they almost look like somethign from windows 95. i have no idea where to start,

May 23, 2007Tried a Repair using XP CD on a 2 year old computer with XP home on it because it was not quite booting to the desktop.It took me all the way through the setup process when it restarted the computer and now presents with the message "Setup is restarting." and then a blank screen with a mouse (which is moveable) appears.The XP disk is still in the CD drive and HD Tune did not pick up any bad sectors when I plugged the disk drive into a USB port on my other computer.Is there any DOS commands from the Recovery section I should be using to check something ?

Sep 12, 2007Everythings hooked up correctly and plugged in so i try to install windows xp pro and everytime i try to choose install from cd it hangs on the inspecting hardware screen. sometimes it'll hang and other times it'll just go to a black screen. Everything checks correctly as being found, like the cd drive, hard drive, shows up on the first screen where it shows u the memory count, etc. Its a SATA seagate drive 160 gb. I've swapped cables, even power connections, and still nothing would fix this. I'm thinking ok well it might be the board or something wrong there with the SATA connection, so i install a SATA pci card and try it with that, but i still get the same message freeze with inspecting hardware. May 27, 2010I have a Dell XPS 400 and I'm running off of a 500 gb barracuda harddrive. Here's my problem. When I try to boot up my computer I got the following error a second or two after the windows logo shows up "A Problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer." The error code is STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203,0x85D97A98, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000) When I insert my windows disc, I get the following error "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer". I searched online and attempted to integrate my harddrive drivers onto my windows disc. This is the source from which I got my drivers http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=173456. I then proceed to use a program called Nlite to create a new windows disc, and burnt that disc using a program called imgburner. When I use that disc and press F6 during set up I get the following message "Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter.

It all started when i got a message from my nortons internet security that winlogon.exe was trying to contact the internet.I ran hijckthis, i ran spybot, i ran ad-aware. fixed items i thought needed to be fixed. I don't know if it was before or after all this, but i began getting pop ups from sites i know do not have pop ups, like my own. ran all the programs again. the same offenders keep popping up... i have posted my logs on this site but sadly no one had responded.anyway, now every time i restart my computer, I get a dll error. every time it is a different dll. also, when on for an extended amount of time, say overnight, i lose internet connectivity, even though my cable modem is showing that there is lots of activity going on.can anyone givew me a clue what's going on, or where i can begin looking? should i just scrap it all and reformat my computer?
