I have tried every thing including installing from a CD, Installing from the Grisoft website, updating manually, and for some reason the AVG update manager will not work. Can someone recommend another Free Antivirus that is as easy to use and as automatic as AVG is, that I can install on her computer. This is an elderly woman that needs things as simple as possible. View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using AntiVir Guard, is there something else more reliable?I am just curious on what anyone can suggest.I used to use McAfee, but then a common problem that a lot of people have been getting apparently. So it not only crashed my pc when it went out of whack it got so bad that i couldn't even get to the uninstall menu, it would kinda show...so i finally had formated my main hard drive, and completely wiped it out and fixed it. So for now I am just using a nice free antivirus program...Does anyone have a suggestion of maybe a safer one? Maybe something that would pick up on more virus protection.

The XP firewall is on so does this means that i no longer need Zone Alarm?However, there is no Antivirus. I previously used Norton.I figure I'd download another free Norton version later. What about programs that run in the background that you don't see? I've never worried about this when installing software--just left them running--but I don't want to mess up with system restore. I have lots of disc space and plenty of memory, if this makes any difference.

Found 2 "Hardware Updates: 1.ALPS pointing device and 2.Storage-primary IDE channel.(don't have a pointing device on my desktop) Tried to download updates on both desktop and notebook computers.Immediately got warnings from my virus software and computers crashed. Tried to reboot and got message that the registry was corrupted. I used Acronis to restore hard drive images and all is well now, but can anyone explain this? Don't know whether this was a virus or whether the downloads caused the crash but I trusted Microsoft.

In my ignorance I took my Windows XP disk that came with my current computer and loaded that onto the library computer. I thought it was like a music CD, where you can use the same disk in all the products that you own. I found illegal to load one operating system onto 2 computers using the same disk. I bought a Windows XP upgrade from Office Max yesterday for the library computer. I have been told though that I need to have Windows ME or 98 or some older version on the computer for the Windows XP upgrade to work. Since I've already put the XP on the library computer it doesn't have 98 on it anymore. win ME or 98 disk from a friend that has upgraded to XP if they have one laying around.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was given an 'old' Dell laptop (Celeron, 600Mhz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HDD, NIC card, floppy disk drive) as well as the reinstallation CD that has XP Pro on it. I've got two roadblocks that I can't seem to get around: The logon is password protected. This laptop was used by a company where each employee logged onto a network. I have the username and password, but, since I'm not connected to that network, it does no good. The computer can't authenticate the password and I don't have access to the network.The laptop came with a floppy drive, not a CD drive.
Is there any way possible to get to the C: prompt to reformat the HD? I am able to get into the boot order setup. Once the HD is reformatted,How can I get the reinstallation done without a CD drive? I've already thought about (and actually copied the CD to) a USB thumb drive, but the boot order doesn't give an option to boot from a USB.Is it worth the $10 - $20 to get a CD drive for this laptop off of eBay?
I have a User that Logs onto the PC on a Domain. No problems (Win2k Pro)! The User leaves her Desk and the Screen Saver (set for whatever Time and Password Protected). She comes back and tries to unlock her station. She can't! It gives her a Wrong password error Then it locks her account out! So there are two ways to fix this. Reset the Password which is a Hassle the Root of the Problem the Screensaver.
