I have a Dell computer, running Windows XP my ISP is Sympatico., that about all that I have learned recently.I have Norton Anti-virus installed. What steps to do I take before I download anything from a website?Someone said, I have to disable my anti-virus program, is this true? Also, when I go into a website, my screen freezes. I hit CTR+ALT+DEl., then Microsoft asks me if I want to send a report, I say YES.What does this mean? I still get the computer screen freezing after sending a report.
Can anyone give me the steps to reduce all the clutter I have on my PC down to ONE edition of Windows XP (Prof) and get rid of all the other stuff? The situation on one of my computers (my wife's) is that there are several (3 anyway) editions/installations of WinXP Home on this computer and, if left to boot up on its own will go to the top one on the list, which is NOT the edition required, and of course it asks for Activation and all that stuff, which, when the correct edition is loaded, is not necessary. I would like to eliminate all but the second edition noted, safely and permanently. How do I go about this safely?
I have a Dell Latitude D600 running XP Professional. I am currently replacing this machine with a new one and want to wipe the hard drive clean and set up the computer to be only used for Internet and iTunes. When I reinstall XP, what steps can I take to strip out any features, etc. that I don't need? I do not have much experience with operating system installations, so I am hoping to find a step by step method to delete or uninstall programs that will slow the system down as well as a way to keep the machine pretty clean.
I want to reformat the hard drive on a Toshiba satellite laptop that has Intel celeron processor and Window XP home OS. Could somebody please guide me through the process step by step? I would also really appreciate it if someone could tell me what all I would need before I start the reformatting process.
I complete each step just fine up to the point after the repair finishes and computer restarts, then goes to the blue windows xp setup screen (the screen that has the header "an exciting new look") with the text "setup is being restarted." this screen is shown for about 10 seconds, then the computer shuts down, restarts and repeats this "setup is being restarted."
The Internet Options Folder is no longer present within the Control Panel. I'm using Windows XP (Service Pack 3). What steps do I need to take to re-install it?

I have been having problems with my computer and a frend told me to download Windows XP OEM SP2 using a torrent website and UTORRENT. However, i'm not sure if my computer is OEM or not, so if I downloaded OEM version, would this mess up my computer even more? Or shall i just download Windows XP SP2?
I want to download Microsoft's antispyware beta. But I've never downloaded anything before.I've started a few but I get confused when I'm suppose to click on "run" or "save", so I end up canceling. I'm pretty new to all this computer stuff but I was able to figure out that I can probably do either one. What I need to know are the steps to take for both. I hope I'm making sense. If not I'll try again.
I have a laptop beside me that i had to do a recovery on, since then it has not allowed me to install SP2, It just hangs when it gets to the registry key bit.
is it possible to download a file straight to the E (cd burner) drive? i don't know what i am doing, so playing around i just downloaded a file to that location, but it says the files are ~ready~ to be written to the cd and i don't know what steps to take next. i would be grateful for any guidance (oooh, and question - if i do manage to get files directly to the cd like that, will they still leave traces just as if i'd downloaded them to the hard drive?)
So just recently whenever i try downloading anything, when i click run it asks me to choose a program and i dont know what to do. For instance i tried to download the Photoshop free trial but once it tells me to choose a program i don't know what to do.

Everytime I try to download and run anything I get a message saying that the path (c: bla bla bla ) is valid. But it is for a machine other than this one.

These popup windows would come and it would be saying another toolbar was installing itself without my downloading it. Has anyone had problems with their computer after downloading Internet Explorer 7? I was going to try it until I was told by a friend that he's had nothing but problems with his computer since he downloaded it.I've read that this IE 7 is a beta version which means that all the bugs haven't been worked out yet? Maybe that might have something to do with my friends computer problems, I don't know.Just wondering what the public response has been about this new version of IE.
I got a new computer a few weeks ago and downloading anything causes whatever else I'm doing to lag and stutter. Its especially noticable in sound and movies but if its a fast download even the mouse will skip around. Even loading websites causes this. Offline everything works fine. Any idea what I could do to fix it?
