Then I found some software online that is supposed to help clean your windows registry. So here's what I installed just this morning: RegCure and Pareto Logic Privacy Controls. View 14 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows 2000 Pro, and recently I began using Asmw eraser pro. Shortly after I began to use Asmw, I began to get errors during startup. The two error messages I receive are: "MotiveSB.exe is generating errors and will be shut down.", and "ycommon.exe is generating errors and will be shut down. You will have to restart your computer." I have run a few virus programs without detecting any viruses. I don't know if these errors are caused by the history cleaner, or what, but they now occur every time I start up.

A couple of symantec errors (don't use norton anymore but can't delete it either)4. And after we get rid of the error messages, the HP update Agent runs the whole time but can't ever complete the update.I usually have to get out of that by alt+ctrl+del.When we try to shut down the computer, it just doesn't do it. Showing a bluescreen (I can't remember the error messege but will make a note if it happens again). Not booting up correctly, with a messege displayed about inserting system disk or removing disk from the floppy drive though nothing is inserted. Sometimes the computer will switch on fine and will not act up at all, but much more often now I will get at least one of these errors each time I try to use the computer, if not several in succession.

I can boot in safe mode.

In the first error if I click on OK for the GetLastError=2hDevice=fffffff I get the error in the second error about tttFailed to open GVCpl WinNT driver Please reboot your system. The other message just goes away (Could not start GPCIDrv driver). It seems to be tied to the Gigabyte driver. The other thing that I have noticed is that Wall Watcher doesn't log anything anymore.

View 6 Replies View RelatedA box came up with C:Windows askmgr.exe in the title bar and the text said, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them" I clicked OK and a second box came up. It had DESKTOP in the title bar and the text said "Could not load or run c: . Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry." I clicked OK and things seemed to work.
I use the free version of Grisoft's AVG so I ran a scan and it found 3 items, one of which was taskmgr.exe infected with Trojan horse SHeur.NOZ. It said it fixed them so I rebooted. The other 2 were svchost.exe and svchost_tmp.exe also infected by SHeur.QCZ
When I start up, I get 2 error messages: one that says windows cannot find "e" and another that says windows cannot find "2.dll"

There are system boxes coming up with registry and dll errors and the whole system seems SLOW.
The family computer is playing up and to the best of my knowledge the computer in question just simply suddenly stopped working as it should. I am unable to get the 'default' welcome screen upon start up and am getting the logon box where you type in a username and passworld. I know how to get rid of this, user accounts>enable welcome screen - but it will not solve the problem.This is just the start of the problems. I get a whole host of errors which popup one after another.

I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
My startup time went up drastically.
I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)
Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:

I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.
Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!
The run link is missing from my startup menu...can anyone help me find it? I know this sounds dumb, but I really need to restore it to my startup so I
can take care of some other problems I'm having.
How do you remove the "Common Startup" items from the startup list in msconfig for Windows XP? I did locate and remove the "Run" items that are located in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionRun.

My sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?

View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen SP3 first came out, I jumped at the opportunity to update my perfectly running smooth computer with SP3 for windows. As soon as I did install SP3, nothing seemed to work correctly anymore and I had to end up reformatting my computer. It destroyed my perfectly good up to date computer. Yes I have a genuine copy of Windows XP if that's what you were about to say. So my question is, did anyone else every have a problem with SP3, are their known issues, and should I risk installing it again? I have always believed in if its not broke, then dont fix it. Well, sometimes my high hopes and curiosity of updating will improve performance from what it already is, gets me in trouble sometimes. Let me know guys. I will hold off for a bit.

My computer will restart (no hanging even, just turn off and back on) while I'm looking at flash media on the net, using photo/art programs, or viewing a word document with pictures in it. Mostly media related things. It also crashes for running defrag or disk cleanup.
When it restarts it's a blue screen stop error. I don't recall what it said exactly, but it's not difficult to get it back. If I keep restarting, I'll keep getting that error. If I wait a minute or so and then restart, it'll come on correctly.
Win 2000 is on D and Win 98 is on C. When 2000 crashes it does something to C because then 98 won't start untill 2000 comes on and repairs the C drive. But now 98 won't come on at all. If I turn on 98 I get an error, so then I'll try 2000 but it won't start for a while after 98 crashes. I don't see why crashes on D affect C and vice versa.
That probably wasn't enough to tell what's wrong.what I should do?

That's the error message I'm getting. I get it from the ATI and XFire. Also, I can't play certain games anymore, because they are prompting me to download dx9.0c
