Did a clean install of xp a few months back, when I booted it up shows 2 copies of windows. The (default) gives me an error when I try to boot it. Never really bothered me before but I need to be able to have windows restart automatically now. There is only one OS, no dual booting what so ever. If I go into Start up and Recovery only one OS is shown. So I can't switch the default, that would be to easy. Anyone have any ideas? This is what my boot.ini looks like
I am trying to install Windows XP Home for a friend. I set the BIOS up to boot from CD and inserted the Windows XP install CD. When the PC boots up I get the following error message: Cannot boot from CD - Code: 5. The CD ROM spins up and sounds like its working fine. It was working fine before I tried to install.

i was on my computer just doing nothing when suddenly i got the blue screen of death! i have not recently installed any hardware OR software, to my knowledge ...and now windows will not let me in - same blue screen every time. does anyone know what this is, and how i can possibly fix it on my own without having to pay a ton of money i don't have for a tech to come to me? a phone tech suggested it might be a spyware issue. if you think so, can you possibly recommend a program that i can buy on CD and is bootable (that i can run while booting up, since that is where the problem is occurring)?
when i open Partition Magic 8 i see my Maxtor 6Y120P0 drive in a yellow color and the file system marked as "other": but my Windows 2000 Disk Management shows healty: under windows i can read and write to the partition, so what is wrong? what does Partition Magic wants?
I have a sony CRX220E1 CD-RW installed. It has worked well, but now "My Computer" shows it only as a CD, but Device manager shows it as a CD-RW and says it is working normally. User software does not now recognize it as a CD-RW.
I have a computer that has had XP installed on it for over one year with no problems.A few days ago it exhibited an error message "Initiated by NT Authority/System - Remote Call Service terminated unexpectedly" in 60 seconds it rebooted the computer.The process repeated itself whenever the computer was rebooted.I found news messages that others had had this experience when a certain virus was active in 2003 and concluded that somehow I had been infected. The Microsoft letters on the subject have not yielded anything that worked.( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893086 for example)
my e6400 cpu does not show up in device manager. it shows up in the bios, and it shows up in the system information screen that lists your computer name, memory installed etc. it does not appear in device manager and task manager only shows one cpu. this is an intel core2 duo processor. system works good just doesnt show up in device manager in windows xp sp2.
I recently baught a new hard drive and intalled windows xp pro sp2 on it. I made 2 partitions on this drive, one for the system and on the other one (D) I put the majority of any user files I might have had (inc. mp3's, avi's, mpg's, jpg's, etc.). Everything was fine at first, and after a week or so, my D partition shows up on my computer but is inaccessible. I get "Disk is not formatted" whenever I try to access it.I have a lot of recordings on that drive that have no backup anywhere.
I just did a fresh load of XP Pro but have a few minor but very annoying problems.
1. In a folder window (ie My Computer or Explorer) the title bar only shows the first letter of the path. If the path is C: emp the "C" is displayed if D:archive then "D" is displayed. I have tried going to "Tools--->folder option ---->view and select "show full path in title bar" and checking and unchecking. I have tried different fonts and different size fonts.But still the title bar is unchanged.
A small program called Window XP Key Viewer shows my OS key differently. I have no idea about the reliability of this program. If anyone of you have some idea about this matter please help me.Does OS changed the key that I used when I installed the OS for security reason? Is there anyway to check the serial number of my OS.
I always liked how in WinXP, in Windows Explorer it shows zip files in the left window, as if they were sub files, allowing their contents to be viewed in the right window with a single click. However, mine has suddenly stopped doing that, zip files now only show up on the right of the screen. Anyone know why this would happen, and a quick fix?

I have gone into my recycle bin on many occasions, and there are never any files in there. At the bottom it also says "0" objects. As a novice, what have I setup wrong, and what can I do to remedy this?
Whenever I try to go into Safe Mode,it loads some files located in the system32,stops at a certain file,go black and shows a flash of blue and then restarts my system.I have windows xp.
Windows XP Professional 32-bit version = max 3.5GB of ram. I have 6gb ram, but windows 32-bit version allows just 3.5gb of ram and that's lame. Why have they set this ridiculus max-limmit? And any way to crack/fix/patch this problem. sure i can upgrade to vista og xp 64-bit but they all sucks.
I have an old Compaq 1200 laptop. It had Windows ME when I got it. I noticed when I first turned it on, the display properties showed that there were 2 monitors when really there's only one (the LCD screen). And the desktop is larger than my laptop screen, so I have to place the mouse on the edges of the screen to get to the rest of the desktop. I figured once I wiped it and installed XP it would go away, but it isn't. I don't see anything in the BIOS either, the BIOS is pretty limited. Has anyone seen this before?
I have Win XP SP2 and Radeon 9200, with the drivers I have installed DirectX 9.0b, but when I trying to install DX 9.0c it says that it's already installed, but it isn't!
I have a situation where a program shows on "All Programs" but not in C:Documents and SettingsusernameStart MenuPrograms or C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuPrograms in Explorer. How can I see that shortcut or whatever in Explorer?
Also, on C:Documents and SettingsusernameStart MenuPrograms and C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuPrograms there appear items (files, shortcuts, whatever) of the same name. What's going on here?
I have been accessing the Hulu tv shows streaming website for weeks (www.hulu.com). Suddenly, when I get to the TV-> browse page and select a tv show, the site hangs. I use Task Manager to kill it (it takes about ten attempts) and try it again and the same thing happens. This has been going on now for a few days.
I deleted the Temp Internet files - in case that was causing a problem - but it made no difference. I have a second, slower PC that can access Hulu without a problem (though not in full screen mode as this pc is too slow for full screen streaming video; the pc I am having the problem with is fast enough to go full screen, which I why I need to use it).......
How can I prune down the number of items shown in the context menu for certain file types? I have a situation where several erroneous programs are listed as "Open With" possibilities, the result of a trial-and-error attempt on my part to find the proper file viewer.I also notice that, in the "Open With" options that list "Recommended Programs" and "Other Programs," there are two listings of the same program. How can I eliminate the duplicate?
Not sure how this file got here. Probably from downloading crap on Limewire. I came across a file in one of my folders that i tried to delete, but nothing happened. Theres no error message at all. It just doesn't delete or do anything. When i try to rename it it does nothing. When i try to move it it does nothing. I'm stumped. Also, when you right-click the file, there is no properties option. I tried one of those move on boot programs to delete it, but when i drag the file into the deleter box, it says the file cannot be found. I think i may have caught a virus.
when i boot up my computer and log onto a user, the wallpaper shows up and that is it. I tried pressing CTRL + ALT + DLT but nothing shows up, except for the mouse. I am not able to access anything on my computer except for when i'm in Safe mode. So I tried system restore and rolled back it back to previous checkpoints. It worked for a while, and that was it.
Windows XP user account is in my wifes name. If I go into control panel user accounts it shows her name and says administrator .But when I go into safe mode it gives a choice of two accounts one with her name and one for administrator. Is that normal?
I've been troubled by viruses and trojans on an older computer (Pentium4) and decided to reinstall XP from the disc to see if I can "start over". I have another primary computer, so it doesn't hurt me to lose all the files etc. I'd rather start with a clean slate. Anyway, the XP install from the disc with SP1 went fine. Then I installed SP2 per the request of the windows update monitor. The install proceeded fine until a copy error occurred.Copy Erro Error occurred while copying file sprb0414.dll.Cannot copy file to directory.
My laptop was working fine last night - wife used it, went to do something else, I picked it up a couple hours later and it powered on but no screen image showed. I noticed after a few more tries that I could VERY faintly see the Microsoft XP logo, the HP logo, but it was close to total darkness.It's a Compaq NX5000 - I had the power cord plugged in too. Also, I saw once or twice that it seemed to power down on its own also.
Recently i noticed that windows event viewer shows this error:"AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to create an illegal memory OpRegion, starting at address 0x0, with a length of 0x1000. This region lies in the Operating system's protected memory address range (0x0 - 0x9f800). This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance." I start getting this message every 10-15 minutes while playing 3D games like Left 4 dead. My system hangs or restarts from time to time (while idle or is booting). I have tested my pc with prime95, furmark, memtest, other burn-in applications. No crashes, everything looks stable.
Under Device Manager it shows Other Drivers and under that SM Bus Controller. All of this has a yellow question mark. I am not sure what this means and need to correct. Thanks in advance. OS is Win XPSP2.
