My laptop was working fine last night - wife used it, went to do something else, I picked it up a couple hours later and it powered on but no screen image showed. I noticed after a few more tries that I could VERY faintly see the Microsoft XP logo, the HP logo, but it was close to total darkness.It's a Compaq NX5000 - I had the power cord plugged in too. Also, I saw once or twice that it seemed to power down on its own also.
View 2 RepliesThe defrag screen shows 2 C drives each a mirror of the other. Scan disk recognizes only one and shows everything OK. How can I remove the mirrored drive and show only the correct one. All other functions are OK.

View 5 Replies View RelatedTo illustrate a setting for someone at work, I hit the print screen button and tried to paste it in M$ Image. No luck with Edit button or right click. Every option is gray color. HP Image won?t give me any options except ask me if I want to scan. I can only do it in M$ Word. I have tried to set up M$ Image as default (tools>general options>Open images in Image, but it still will only work in Word. This isn?t that big a problem now I know it only works in Word, but what is improperly configured? Shouldn?t I be able to create a jpg of my desktop in Image to paste or attach to an email or in a forum such as this?

I figured it was due to a virus, so i wiped the drive and reinstalled windows xp. everything seems to work ok, except for the fact that now neither my internal wireless nor my SD slot seem to work at all. Its like my laptop is rejecting them and it didnt start happening until i reinstalled XP.

A lot of popups started coming up that said it found new hardware(about 10 or 12). I restored it back a couple of days and now everything is back to normal. I hope I didn't make a mistake doing this. I ran my ewido and then my AVG. If it happens again, maybe I should just trash it.

While the laptop was being repaired I used an enclosure to access my data and changed the permissions on it several times and I think that may be part of my problem. When I first put it in I could access everything okay, but first I had to change my permissions which I did. After that I tried installing new software (itunes) and it said I didn't have proper access, so I went in and messed with the permissions again. Now after I log on I'm greeting with a black screen. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was looking for a United Methodist Church logo that is commonly used and went on one of the UMC websites to see if I could copy it to my computer for purposes of incorporating it into graphic artwork for some t-shirts that my client wanted us to print for them. I found the logo and clicked on the outside of it and dragged my cursor over the image until it became "transparant blue" and sent it to my computer. I thought it was going to my artwork file, but instead it went to my desktop. The problem is that it is now permanently on my desktop.I cannot highlight it, encompass it in a box or move it at all. This image is not from the screen saver program. It's not an icon. You can't even click on it and move it around on the desktop.It doesn't respond to any right clocks or left clicks at all. It is permanently rooted in this one spot on my desktop screen.

When I turn on my computer it sort of hangs up on the first screen where it shows the ASUS manufacturers logo or whatever. I believe this is where it is running POST tests in the background, I've hit DELETE before to see whats happening during this and its auto detecting Primary Drives and stuff like that. Well within 20-30 seconds of that the screen goes blank and theres a one little blinking cursor for about 3 seconds then the cursor jumps down a line and blinks twice and finally the Windows XP loading screen comes up.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI run XP SP2 on Athlon 2600 and 512 MB RAM and last night I shut it down as usal. When I turn my computer on this morning, it started to boot, but after few seconds, the long message appears, something like: "We are sorry for inconvenience but Windows can not start... " and it tells me to either boot into Safe mode, use last configuration, or start Windows normally. The last option is highlighted. But after that, blue screen flashes for just a moment (long enough to see there is some text but not long enough to read it), and then it goes back to start... detecting hard drive and stuff. It keeps looping like that forever. I tried to go to safe mode, but the same things happen. It goes back to start and then a "Start Windows normally" is Highlighted again.

I can run an app, work in it and then close it. Then the mouse freezes or slows to a crawl. I can not open any thing else. I registered several DLL's such as urlmon.dll,etc. because of a Micrsoft fix listed elsewhere but this did not work. All spyware and virus checks have been negative. CTRL-ALT-Del gives me an error that the taskmgr.exe could not be initialized. Now the only way to shut down is to totally power off and if reboot I get the blue screen while the disk is checked and it is always negative

The only downside of this is that I have to unplug each one and put the other one in or vice versa everytime that I want to use them. Is there any way possible that I could plug both of these in at the same time? I had an idea that an AC powered USB HUB might do the trick?

Basically, my computer is booting itself up from a powered off state but only when the phone line is connected to it (I have dial up internet access). If the phone line is not connected to it, the PC stays off. (Note the PC isn't dialling out - at least i don't think it is). I guess the easy answer is just to remember to unplug the phone line

View 9 Replies View RelatedI dont know if this is in the right Forum as its a strange one.Just before i was playing on Counter Strike and the computer crashed.The power was still on, on the CPU, and also on the Speakers and Monitor.But the Monitor isnt picking up the Computer, ive tried a different monitor but to no avail.Ive basically just swapped all the wires over from the computer onto one of my old computers which im on now, and there was no problems what so ever.So clearly its something wrong with the other computer, but it still powers up and is running, but just nothing appears on my screen
