OEM Powered Machine - Can Be Changed
May 15, 2007
I've a 4 yr old pc I built myself complete with an OEM copy of Windows XP.I can buy a faster compatible CPU (an Athlon XP) for the same motherboard but what will WGA do?My understanding is that I can't change the motherboard but changing some other components may be OK. s this correct or does anyone have some recent experience of changing components on an OEM XP powered machine?

I changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?

I have been here a few times before mostly asking questions about memory etc. This time I have a different question I currently have two External USB HDD's sitting at 40GB each which I record shows and sports onto using my TV Tuner card. The only downside of this is that I have to unplug each one and put the other one in or vice versa everytime that I want to use them. Is there any way possible that I could plug both of these in at the same time? I had an idea that an AC powered USB HUB might do the trick?

I have just reinstalled WinXP to try to get rid of this problem but it still persists. Basically, my computer is booting itself up from a powered off state but only when the phone line is connected to it (I have dial up internet access). If the phone line is not connected to it, the PC stays off. (Note the PC isn't dialling out - at least i don't think it is). I guess the easy answer is just to remember to unplug the phone line

My laptop was working fine last night - wife used it, went to do something else, I picked it up a couple hours later and it powered on but no screen image showed. I noticed after a few more tries that I could VERY faintly see the Microsoft XP logo, the HP logo, but it was close to total darkness. It's a Compaq NX5000 - I had the power cord plugged in too. Also, I saw once or twice that it seemed to power down on its own also.

I dont know if this is in the right Forum as its a strange one.Just before i was playing on Counter Strike and the computer crashed. The power was still on, on the CPU, and also on the Speakers and Monitor. But the Monitor isnt picking up the Computer, ive tried a different monitor but to no avail.Ive basically just swapped all the wires over from the computer onto one of my old computers which im on now, and there was no problems what so ever.So clearly its something wrong with the other computer, but it still powers up and is running, but just nothing appears on my screen

When I power down my Seagate external disk drive after completing a backup, Windows XP reboots itself. The disk is connected via firewire. The drive otherwise seems to be working properly. XP is up to date.My neighbor said he had the same problem when disconnecting his USB camera after downloading photos. The solution to his problem was to remove a recently applied microsoft fix. Unfortunately he no longer has a record of which fix

I've got two big screen monitors connected to my 9800GT via HDMI cables. They are configured for a vertical span configuration in the NVIDIA drivers (updated to the latest version of the driver)When I turn off the second monitor which I do sometimes to save power, either windows or the nvidia drivers auto-detects that the second monitor was powered off and changes my video configuration to a single monitor configuration, resizing my desktop back to fit on only one monitor. When I turn my second monitor back on, I need to manually re-configure the video settings every time.

I recently installed three new Dell Optiplex, Ultra compact computers in a Doctors Office. To keep things streamlined and tamper proof, I located the PC's above the ceiling tiles and wall mounted the Dell 19" monitors. This installation method required me to utilize the USB ports in the monitor for the keyboard and mouse. The problem is that whenever the monitors are powered off for any length of time, the PC no longer recognizes the mouse and keyboard. A simple reboot fixes everything but due to the remote location of my PC's, a simple reboot requires a ladder and is quite annoying and time consuming in a hectic doctors office.

I saw another thread on this issue, but it didn't quite fit, so I thought I'd get others opinions. This computer was built for me by a non-major vendor. I consider myself semi-computer literate, and feel comfortable with most work required inside my case. Let me start by saying that this issue happens most often when I've woken my computer up from sleep mode. I have made no major changes to the hardware or software recently. What I did do was move the computer, rather gently, 2100 miles to my new home in a new city. The PC is under warentee, but the original vendor is rather far away. I also noticed that the first time I booted the computer after the move, the computer made a funny noise. It sounded like something (either a fan of the HD) was spinning improperly. I immediately powered down my system and rebooted, and have not had the noise since.
The full message (sans text) reads:

Begining dump physical memory Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance. I've also noticed that on the boot screen, my PC no longer seems to be doing a memory test, or showing my 3 gigs of memory. In windows, it appears the system sees the memory, but the memory test seems absent on boot. I have no problems, so far, running resource heavy programs. This seems, like I've said, to happen only when I sleep then wake up my PC. Rebooting from this screen will cause the PC to reboot itself constantly, but turning the PC off and rebooting seems to give me no errors, again, until I sleep it.

i downloaded "Demo Version" Jv16 Power tools 2005 from a link to find duplicate files and clean my registry, I thought that programs I had uninstalled and reinstalled for varius reasons were all duplicated with missing files. The download didn't have the handbook which i found out later i needed so now after running dup. file finder, reg cleaner. I have a very unstable system nothing stays stable and there is a mass of backups I don,t know where to start. The forum there won,t help. supposedly I got a old Beta version. My backups don,t look anything like there's. I would like to go back to before i installed with system restore point but i dont know if it can retrieve files from Jv16 backup or what.

I'm trying to help my friend install XP Home on his Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. The laptop is currently running Vista, and he wants XP so that he can play KOTOR.The problem is that when I insert the CD and boot from it, the setup loads fine to the point where it gives the option to set up Windows XP, to repair Windows XP, etc. When I press enter to "set up Windows XP", it gives a message:"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard drsk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program

Everything else is working fine, good audio for all playbacks.I don't have a system speaker attached to the motherboard. I don't have an x64 machine, just a 32-bit Core 2 Duo. So, I don't know why I can't run 16-bit applications and DOS programs. Whenever I try to run something made for Windows 3.x or a DOS application, I get "NTVDM.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close, sorry for the inconvienence..." Is it corrupt or what? This is a brand-new machine. I need to run several old MS-DOS applications and they won't run. COMMAND.COM but not CMD), EDIT.COM, QBASIC, they all bomb out with the error.

I'm almost done building a new machine for a friend. He's not keen on all the hassle of reinstalling software on the new machine then adding all the personal touches again.I wondered if it might be possible to take the HDD out of his existing machine - giving him two HDDs, and making this transplanted drive the master drive and renaming it C: and renaming the new HDD to E:To my way of thinking, the new machine should boot up from the transplanted drive and boot the OS (WinXP), which should find and install the new hardware in the new machine then continue to run as if it was the old but with the faster CPU and bigger RAM of the new machine. This would obviously save heaps of time reinstalling WinXP, Office, Antivirus plus backed up data, emails etc. etc. etc.
