The defrag screen shows 2 C drives each a mirror of the other. Scan disk recognizes only one and shows everything OK. How can I remove the mirrored drive and show only the correct one. All other functions are OK.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently setup my new computer and during the XP setup I thought I had partitioned my Hard drive so I had 3 of them,I did two 100gb and the 3rd with the remaining. In my computer it shows my main one C:/ and the other D:/.as well, nothing.Its just there, properties says 0 bytes.How can I get the most out of my hard drive, and get the other partitions running? I want to be able to store all of my music on one, and files on the other and have the 3rd for misc files.

View 42 Replies View RelatedWin xp pro, pen 4, norton antivirus, Win firewall. After I downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger the defrag process wouldn't defrag all the files. I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.

I noticed after a few more tries that I could VERY faintly see the Microsoft XP logo, the HP logo, but it was close to total darkness.It's a Compaq NX5000 - I had the power cord plugged in too. Also, I saw once or twice that it seemed to power down on its own also.

I figured it was due to a virus, so i wiped the drive and reinstalled windows xp. everything seems to work ok, except for the fact that now neither my internal wireless nor my SD slot seem to work at all. Its like my laptop is rejecting them and it didnt start happening until i reinstalled XP.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy computer shut down and when I turned it back on, all the icons were very large and they covered my whole screen,. A lot of popups started coming up that said it found new hardware(about 10 or 12). I restored it back a couple of days and now everything is back to normal. I hope I didn't make a mistake doing this. I ran my ewido and then my AVG. If it happens again, maybe I should just trash it.

While the laptop was being repaired I used an enclosure to access my data and changed the permissions on it several times and I think that may be part of my problem. When I first put it in I could access everything okay, but first I had to change my permissions which I did. When I turn on my computer it sort of hangs up on the first screen where it shows the ASUS manufacturers logo or whatever. I believe this is where it is running POST tests in the background, I've hit DELETE before to see whats happening during this and its auto detecting Primary Drives and stuff like that. Well within 20-30 seconds of that the screen goes blank and theres a one little blinking cursor for about 3 seconds then the cursor jumps down a line and blinks twice and finally the Windows XP loading screen comes up.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI run XP SP2 on Athlon 2600 and 512 MB RAM and last night I shut it down as usal. When I turn my computer on this morning, it started to boot, but after few seconds, the long message appears, something like: "We are sorry for inconvenience but Windows can not start... " and it tells me to either boot into Safe mode, use last configuration, or start Windows normally. The last option is highlighted. But after that, blue screen flashes for just a moment (long enough to see there is some text but not long enough to read it), and then it goes back to start... detecting hard drive and stuff. It keeps looping like that forever. I tried to go to safe mode, but the same things happen. It goes back to start and then a "Start Windows normally" is Highlighted again.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using a Gateway Tablet PC. XP PRO; 2Gig ram; 80 gig hd; Within the last few days it has fallen apart. I have added nothing new. I boot it on and all seems well. I can run an app, work in it and then close it. Then the mouse freezes or slows to a crawl. I can not open any thing else. I registered several DLL's such as urlmon.dll,etc. because of a Micrsoft fix listed elsewhere but this did not work. All spyware and virus checks have been negative. CTRL-ALT-Del gives me an error that the taskmgr.exe could not be initialized. Now the only way to shut down is to totally power off and if reboot I get the blue screen while the disk is checked and it is always negative

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. View 1 Replies View RelatedMy general understanding is that it isnt necessary to defrag very often. An occasional defrag should do the trick. Unless, maybe, youve done a lot of stuff recently. I do have several questions though that I hope someone can clear up for me and anyone else that might be interested.
1. Does a pre windows defrag program help any at all? If so, how often should it be run?
2. Is this different than the pre installed Microsoft chkdsk program? Isnt it also a pre windows defrag program?
3. Is one or the other better? Or are they basically the same?
4. What happens if, on occasion, you use a pre windows defrag program and the chkdsk program? Is there a conflict?
5. Does one try to write a certain way and the other rewrites a different way and therefore your wasting your time and effort?
6. Does a pre windows defrag program make a windows defrag program unnecessary?
7. Since it has been stated that the windows defrag program works fine, but isnt the greatest, what if you use a different combination, like, JkDefrag and a pre windows program? I mention JkDefrag because, if you wanted, it can be set to defrag daily or weekly. Set and forget.
8. Assuming one is doing a lot of stuff, when does a registry defrag program enter the picture? Or is one ever needed? Is this just a marketing thing?
9. And, of course, there are also registry cleaners. Again, assuming your doing lots of stuff.
10. And also theres also programs like CCleaner program, which cleans out cookies, temp files, etc.
11. Is there an order that one might want to run these programs? Even if it is only monthly or even less often?
So, my inquiry, isnt which program is better, as I would assume there would be a lot of opinions about that. But rather, what combo might one want to have on hand, or run, on those occasions that you feel the need to defrag. Again, if we look at the CCleaner program, in basically one step, it does a pretty good job of cleaning out all sorts of stuff. If you wanted, it can even be set to clean automatically. Set and forget. If one were to do the same steps, manually, it would take much longer, and maybe, still not be as effective as the CCleaner program. I have Zone Alarm firewall. Basically its set and, for the most part, forgotten about. I have the AVG anti virus program, set to do auto scans on a daily basis. Set and forget.
I have a Toshiba Qosmio running on XP. More than 50GB available and defragment wont start. Don't know what to do, it never did it before.
View 10 Replies View RelatedDepending on the "Expert you speak to" they all have their own opinions. One tells me to defrag daily, another tells my it will damage the hard drive to defrag daily and should not defrag more than once a week.
