I have always had the setting "Show Window Contents While Dragging" option set on my computer, and it has always worked fine. However, starting roughly a month or so ago, the option refuses to stick. Almost every time I boot up my computer, I will have to set the option again for the day.I am running Windows XP Home Edition, on an HP computer.
View 1 RepliesI have a report regarding a couple of high risk temporary internet files that are supposedly located inside certain content.ie5 folders, but those particular folders aren't showing up in any of the user profiles of this system.How do I locate them? I've done a normal search for folders named content.ie5 with 8 folders showing up, but none show the number-letter folders listed on the report. I've done a search in the XP registry and even the content.ie5 folders don't appear anywhere. Tried doing a search on just the number-letter subfolders mentioned and still nothing.I have all files and folders not hidden, including subfolders, but obviously XP ignores that direction with regard to these 'history' or 'temp int files' folders.The report came from SpyDoctor on a trial run prior to purchasing the program, so it can't remove them without purchase/registration. I've been able to remove all others listed in the report manually but not these entries because I can't locate them anywhere. If they don't show up anywhere, how does spydoctor find them?

I've lost the system recovery disk buta friend gave me theirs. when I inserted it I was asked for a serial number and duly put in the one on the bottom of the laptop but it was rejected.Nothing would work so I exited the menu and went out and purchased a brand new copy of the O/S. However when I put the disc in it keeps taking me back to the old screen which asks me for a serial number and it wont accept the one form the disk I purchased.

I have tried again and again to get it to stay on and checked, all to no avail. I don't understand why. At the desk top I right click anywhere to get to very small window with (properties) at the very bottom. I then click on Properties and get (Appearance). Next I click on appearance tab to get to the window that has the (Effects) button. Next, I click on the effects tab and look to see if the little bitty square next to (Show Window Contents While Dragging) is checked. And it is never checked. So I check it to get the effect of dragging the contents with the window as I move it around the screen.

On my home pc (XP Home) if I do the same thing, the item is copied to "My Document" and I then have to delete the original left on my desktop. What do I need to do so that I can "Move" items into My folders instead of copying them?
My kids downloaded limewire this weekend and downloaded a bunch of stuff--spyware included I think. Anyway, there are now tool bars installed that we keep uninstalling that reappear instantly, other programs we can't uninstall. Our MS Anti-spyware beta won't even run, we keep getting an error that says "rendering lens," and the computer is dragging in general.

Will somebody please tell me how to get it back cause without it I can't use Java stuff. Please don't tell me I have to reformat cause I can't do that. I have no disks to do so. I tried going to Temporary Internet Files and creating a folder but it wont let me, nor will it let me move a folder in it.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox). This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unusable. Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogged) this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am trying to figure out how to add changing content to my background. I decided to use the Web option in the customize desktop area of the display settings. I made two test attempts trying different things out to see if it would do what I wanted. I had no trouble and so I went ahead and made my image. Now when I went to add the actual image in it let me, but wouldn't save the changes after I logged off. It works fine while I am still logged in, but as soon as I log off my changes are gone. So I thought that maybe there was a limit on how many items I could have in the list at any given time. I had no need for my test objects, so I deleted them from the display control panel. Now for the surprise - Those changes don't save either. After I log off the test objects are restored. I now thought that maybe it was some kind of safety feature so you don't remove it by mistake. I went through and found where the registry keys for it were located and deleted all of them. This only effected my current session - After I logged off, the test ones are put back and my actual one is removed, from both the control panel and the registry.

I had the Office XP installation disk "repair" the installation. there was no change. I tried MSWord. Help screen was same as in Excel - blank. I then tried to access Help and Support Center from the Start Menu. It would not open. I solved the probem by running the restore tool from the System Tools folder and setting the machine back to a time 1 week earlier, but I have no idea what would cause this issue. My machine uses ZoneAlarm Pro, Norton Anti-Virus, Sunbelt CounterSpy and is behind a router so I don't think it was the result of a malicious program.

For example, in the My Music folder, clicking on "Play All" doesn't work (the cursor goes to an hourglass for a few seconds but WMP doesn't pop up or anything) and it behaves the same for every link on the left side.
View 12 Replies View Relatedi have a problem with windows whenever i try to search a folder. i type in what i'm looking for but when i hit enter the page shows the standard "page cannot be found". at the top it says that interent explorer has restricted content that could access my computer. this is obviously a load of crap because all i'm trying to do is use the search function. it's not just when i try to search that it happens, it also happens when i try to get to "my network places" using the locations found at the side of the screen when i'm in my computer.

Since I installed SP2 IE pops up a message that says "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options..." The solution to this problem is supposed to be to mark the check box in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Security " Allow active content to run in files on My Computer" The problem I have is that this for some reason doesn't fix my problem. I still get the message poping up saying "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to be able to right click, and when I select new, have a submenu under the new that I could put my custom files for. I actually have used a program (Tweak UI) that allows me to to remove or add new files, but the problem I find is this.
I to a lot of HTML coding and create new files often. As much as I like conforming to strict, I have to use traditional from time to time, and I wanted to add for both. Well, when I used Tweak UI to add my strict template, and then checked out my "New ->" it was labeled as "New Firefox Document", which from reg searching I show is exactly what HTML is associated to. I wondered if there was a program, or a hack for my registry that would allow me to have a new file under the context menu that would otherwise not alter what .HTML was associated to (meaning, show "New Strict" and "New Traditional" but when you check the properties of index.html would show "Type of File: Firefox Document").
My guess is that to really pull this off, that I would have to make two new extentions (like .ext1 and .ext2) and when I make the new file, simply rename the extension. I know how to do that, but I was hoping that there was another way around it. Also, as noted above, how does one make a submenu under new to group things in? Such as
New -> Folder
New -> Shortcut
-----------------------
New -> text document
New -> Media -> file
New -> Media -> another
New -> Programing -> whatever
1) I am unable to record data (mostly JPEGs) to a CD-R using WinXP Pro and my sony dru500ax DVD/CD recorder. I have in the past been able to do this with no problem using either the built in windows functionality nor Nero. Now I am unable to use either method and I don't know what has changed. Both methods get partially through the write process and fail (but nothing ends up being written on the CD).
2) I am unable to read CDs that were burned by my father on his computer. The disks clearly have stuff on them and I've been able to get to the content on other machines (at work, at friends, WinXP, Win2K3, etc) But when I put them in my drive and open the drive in explorer it shows that nothing is written on the CD
I have an old Intel mp3 player. Intel's website stopped supporting it a long time ago but they do still suppply the XP driver. I couldn;t install the driver from Device Manager and went to the driver file itself. The computer produces a warning that "this file contains Active Content" and the computer won;t let the file open. I'n trying to open it from a folder, not from the website so this isn;t an IE warning, except it kind of is. It looks the same, it brought up the Intel website (I may have had it open) and the yellow security warning appeared. That has options to open it, I think. The software on disc was associated with MusicMatch Jukebox.I had to install MusicMatch software before I could install the Intel player software.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have created a folder, and inside this folder are a number of sub folders, each containing various text files, images, etc etc. I would like each sub folders content to be arranged in the same way. So have used VIEW/ARRANGE_ICONS_BY/TYPE/SHOW_IN_GROUPS
This setting places all .JPG, BMP, GIF, TEXT etc. in groups, and looks quite well ordered and neat. Probably not everybody's first choice, but it works for me. However, to achieve this layout I have to visit every single folder and it's sub folders individually, in order to make the necessary adjustments, and so that they all view in the same way. This can, and does, take hours. Is there any way that I can specify how I would like the contents of all sub folders within a main folder to be set up, without having to make the adjustments for each one over and over again? What's more, I have an external HDD connected to my P.C as additional storage, and when I transfer any folders to this external drive, whilst the contents remain intact, the settings for how each folder should view appear lost. So, back I come to the same old layout issue again.
I need to free up some disk space on my laptop hard drive (Casio Laptop, Win XP, Office 2000, Pentium 4, 133 MHZ, 20gig HHD). c:/temp folder has about 6GB of file in it. Is it safe to delete files in the c:/temp folder and is there any way I can automate the deletion of files from this folder once a month or something?

When i open any link with "open in new window" the new window is not full size screen window.Of course i dragged it by mouse many times and that should fix it later.It means it should be opened as it had been dragged,but that's never happened though i dragged it about a hundred time as a full screen size.What is the wrong here?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just replaced my old Windows 2000 HD with a newly purchased HD and installed Windows XP Pro/SP2 with all the latest updates from MS.When opened this web page by placing cursor on the line and click, the Google page appears briefly on the myWin.doc window but immediately closes and opens a new, different size window for the Google web page. In the old Windows 2000, the Google page remains opened on the same window overlapping the myWin.doc window and no new window is opened.
