I just now noticed something incredibly odd happening in my start menu. The Search option, specifically, where it's supposed to say Search, is replaced with strange lettering. Here's a picture of what it looks like:
View 1 RepliesI am running Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 6. Yahoo Search has replaced Search Companion and there is no preference button. There is a Customize button but it only brings up a pop-up page that says Ops wrong page. Try again Later. how I can Get the MSN Search Companion back.
When I invoke the search function, the only thing that appears is the search window with the dog search companion. But no search functions or options. No options to search. I think it is broken

When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?

But I want to get my information off the drive because I stupidly haven't backed it up recently. I can get the drive to start (with protests and a very slow reaction time), but though I can hear it spinning and feel the vibrations, it won't trigger the monitor. my computer was infected. I used to able to do a search from the address bar, but now I'm hyjacked to some sort of porno search engine.I use spybot,zone alarm,AVG, webroot. I've tryied using Hyjack this program in atempt to find problem.Still suffering!!! Any suggestions ?

However, today i did that over 10 times and it kept giving me the bsod. After installing the Japanese language pack in XP, the file path / delimiter has been replaced by the yen sign. I have uninstalled the language pack but the problem persists. All new file paths now look like this -- C:Documents and SettingsJoe BloggsDesktop. And the / key still produces /, so it's not just a key substitution. XP SP 2 fully updated.

I had a nasty virus attack and had to repair XP Pro. All else is repaired as far as I can tell, but this version of Search is not nearly as handy.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I start SR I can only see one restore point, the one I made the day after I replaced my hard drive.But now when I try to create a new restore point it allows me to enter the name, then after I click OK I get the message ''System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer , and then run System restore again.''After I restart I run System Restore again and get the same message.
Also, the restore points I made before I replaced my hard drive no longer show up.When I replaced the drive (with a Maxtore 80 gb), I used their MaxBurn program to duplicate everything form the old one to the new one. It boots from the new C drive and runs OK and all my programs are there, but some act strangely. I'm wondering if these programs are looking for some kind of system volume information tho make sure they are still on the original system.
I had a wallpaper background on my computer, but it was suddenly replaced by a white background that says Display Problem in a big blue triangle. Under it there was a box that said "Click here to restore background" or something like that. When I clicked on it my background became a solid blue background. I tried changing it by right clicking, but when the Properties windows opens, the only folders that show up are the Screensaver and Settings folders. All the others are gone.I can change the wallpaper when I go to My Pictures and right click and set up as background, but the screen remains blue and you can only see the picture briefly when powering on and off

View 6 Replies View Relatedis there a way in Windows XP to turned off searching in *.zip during the Search command? I search multiple network drives serveral times a day for files and do not need to search in the *.zip files. By searching the *.zip files the time is greatly increased. When I had Windows 2000 the search would take about 1 minute (did not search *.zip files) and now in Windows XP the search takes over 12 and half minutes (1079 *.zip files)
I did a test by making all the *.zip hidden and did the search again - averaged about 59 seconds. Unforunately, I have to leave the *.zip files as not hidden.
Any ideas?
I'm battling spyware removal at the moment (aurora) and somehow my win xp sp2 search function no longer works. i get an error "A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found" you may need to run setup I went to the microsoft website and downloaded the hotfix, however it doesn't work with sp2! anybody know how to fix this? I checked and i do have the srchasst folder in windows.
