On Windows XP, when I click on "Search," I come to a "Windows Search" screen that has "Desktop" and "Web" as choices for a search. I typed in ".pst" and got a bunch of Outlook messages and not where the Outlook .pst folder is. Is there another choice for "Search" that will show me where the searched-for is?
View 4 RepliesI use Windows 2000 professional edition.It has both service pack 4 and ws2_32 package.I was trying to install iTune.After I restarted after installation, the process stopped at a blue screen saying there is a critical error,or something like that. So I restarted computer and this time used F8 button to make it start at last known good configuration. When Windows started again, iTune finished installation. Then a bunch error messages popped up from various software's. The messages included ws2_32.dll invalid or too old, sockets initiation fail, and TCP/IP not installed. On top of that the internet stopped working. I have tried installing ws2_32 package again, but it didn't work. I am about to try reinstall service pack 4 roll up 1.

Once Windows loaded, a bunch of DOS shell windows began opening.Then every program he clicked gave an error message that the DLL file was missing. He has IE running and MSN Messenger; no sound.error message and then had him try to open Add/Remove Programs at the cmd prompt. It wouldn't, and the error message given was: Error in shell32.dll Missing entry: control_run.dll NOD32 system scan hung up at 20% so he gave up on that. He says his computer occasionally runs Check Disk on reboot.

I have deleted all messages from the box. Also if I look in "Local Drive (C)" and in folder "Outlook Express Stored Folder" it shows the following "microsoft.public.windowsxp.help and support.dbx" at 267,707 kb I am getting messages to compress files to get more space. At startup a program is launched called "Desktop Search" which puts a small search window just above my system tray. In the tray on the lower right of screen I can see a magnifying glass. If I click on it I get Windows Desktop Search Index Status. Once the items left to scan reaches 0, my computer runs fine. Then a blank IE page opens up with no address in the address box.I have tried to repair XP by running the command: sfc/scannow, which in turn asks for the XP Prof install CD to locate any missing files, etc. Then I also tried re-installing IESP1 in hopes of fixing the problem that way. I do not know how I have change the Window operating system setting that when I double click on most of the folders in my computer it goes to a searh menu. Only "My Document" folder is working correctly (when I double click on it, it opens the folder rather than going to search mode). When I go into my event viewer and look at the only red-exclamation-point item I can, I see the following (two items, both appear in the log at exactly the same time. In this case, the game was Free Realms. As you'll note from the error, it appears to be related to the Windows Search Service. I've attached the minidump to this link, for those of you uber-XP-experts that can understand it. Also, I keep this PC maintained pretty well. I run anti-malware software on a regular basis, use ClamWin for my antivirus, and avoid iffy-websites.

Whenever I open Outlook (Office 2003 with all updates installed), the screen blanks, then reloads with 8 bit color. If I change it to 32 bit while Outlook is open, after about 30 seconds, the same blank-reload happens. When I exit Outlook, the sequence reverses, (blank -32 bit reloads). I have tried resetting my display resolution, from every program, nothing works. Interestingly, changing from a CRT to an LCD monitor has made no difference at all.

View 9 Replies View Relatedfor some reason i was under the impression that my work computer had virus protection. well... nope. i had to reload the o/s (windows 2000 pro) after the computer crashed but fortunately i lost none of my data, mostly because i keep it on a thumb drive so i can work on it at home. i now have norton AV on it and got rid of more than 14 viruses or threats, and now i am wondering if anything else was left that wasn't detected. oh, and the computer is a dell optiplex gx150 workstation.
