that use AIM and she has been begging me to install it for her so she can talk to them. After installing AIM the next day I noticed the following. At startup a program is launched called "Desktop Search" which puts a small search window just above my system tray. This program does not work and will not respond when trying to close the program from the Task Manager. The program is not listed in "ADD/REMOVE Software" in the control panel. I have run both ADAWARE-SE and SPYBOT S&D, and have not had any results. The only reference to this program that I can find is in the registry under;HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
There are 2 entries; Desktop Search, and FFIS. Both are type REG_SZ and the Values are C:WINDOWSisrvsDesktopSearch.exe
When I open programs they are slow to respond. I click on the icon but it seems to take for ever to open up but I don't know why. They use to open up fairly quickly before and nothing has changed.
I need advice on which of the most current Windows desktop search products to use with an aging Thinkpad R40 (Centrino 1.4GHz / 512mb shared)? I generally search emails but need something that can do it with minimal impact to my already sluggish pc (priority), and with a usable (low-learning curve) interface.
when I click on a Shortcut on the desktop, instead of starting the program, it goes to the 'SEARCH' area...I then have to go back to the Desktop and right click on the Shortcut and click on 'OPEN' in order for the program to start.
I have 20 icons on my desktop. Only 7 of them act up. When I left click some icons, the "search" window opens instead of the program I wish to open. When I right click these same icons, the menu box opens that gives me choices ( open, explore, send to, copy etc) as it should However, the top selection in the drop down box (highlighted) is "search" instead of "open".As a routine now, I must right click and icon, choose "open" from the drop down box, and go about my business. How did "search" get into the box to begin with, why are only some of the icons infected, how do I get rid of it.I just installed my new "anti everything" renewal for 2005 (Norton) and it saw nothing, (The Norton icon also has this problem) I've tried freeby spyware remover etc.. nothing. I deleted the infected icons, went back into explorer and created new shortcuts.
When I boot up my computer, Windows desktop search indexes my computer. This causes the computer to take 10 minutes or longer to boot up. In the tray on the lower right of screen I can see a magnifying glass. If I click on it I get Windows Desktop Search Index Status. Once the items left to scan reaches 0, my computer runs fine. Until then it is extremely slow and unusable. This just started happening about a month ago.
On Windows XP, when I click on "Search," I come to a "Windows Search" screen that has "Desktop" and "Web" as choices for a search. I typed in ".pst" and got a bunch of Outlook messages and not where the Outlook .pst folder is. Is there another choice for "Search" that will show me where the searched-for is?
My wife's computer got real slow. She says it happened the same time asWindows XP told her to add a Search Desktop feature. Is this a realWindows program? If so, what is the best way to remove it and everythingit has indexed
Whenever I try to use the Start|Search|For Files or Folders function of Windows XP, I get the following Error message box stating, "A file required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run Setup". (1) Does anyone have any idea what caused this problem? (2) What file is missing? (3) Can I fix it without having to run Setup?
The new interface in Office 2007 has a great new look but finding your favorite feature can be a little difficult at first. Microsoft Office Labs offers a helpful utility called Search Commands that brings search to the ribbon. Can’t find a specific feature? Just search for it!
Just download and install the Search Commands utility and you will have a new search tab in Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
Download Search Commands from Microsoft Office Labs

I am running Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 6. Yahoo Search has replaced Search Companion and there is no preference button. There is a Customize button but it only brings up a pop-up page that says Ops wrong page. Try again Later. how I can Get the MSN Search Companion back.
What are the rules for a case sensitive search when searching for all files and folders in XP. I have set the option, and have tried searching in both upper and lower case options, and still get the same results.
My Search Companion now calls itself Search Results and does not offer to find Pictures, music, or video, Documents, etc. Also the animated assistant is not available nor is the change preferences option. I had a nasty virus attack and had to repair XP Pro. All else is repaired as far as I can tell, but this version of Search is not nearly as handy.
i have just gone to a search in the search link in the start menu and got a file missing message saying a file that is required to run search companian could not be found you may need to run set up

is there a way in Windows XP to turned off searching in *.zip during the Search command? I search multiple network drives serveral times a day for files and do not need to search in the *.zip files. By searching the *.zip files the time is greatly increased. When I had Windows 2000 the search would take about 1 minute (did not search *.zip files) and now in Windows XP the search takes over 12 and half minutes (1079 *.zip files) I did a test by making all the *.zip hidden and did the search again - averaged about 59 seconds. Unforunately, I have to leave the *.zip files as not hidden. Any ideas?
I dont know what this means Saturday, August 20, 2005 atapi The device, DeviceIdeIdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period what does this mean and how do i fix it? i found the error on ADVANCED SYSTEM INFORMATION - ERROR LOG
I am currently running Windows XP. My other half was logged on and he surfs a lot of music sites for latest releases. After one of his uses we started to get this message when we would try to switch users MediaAcck.exe and the computer freezes. It asked you to click cancel or OK and doing either does nothing you also cannot close out by hitting the x in the upper right hand side. The computer does not respond to control alt delete and the only way you can get out of this is to manually shut the computer down. Again the only time it happens is if you are switching log on users. I have run the latest McAfee virus scan it picks up nothing - I also ran spybot and it also comes up with nothing. I ran a search for this file on my c drive and it does not show it exist at all. I am unsure as what to do next
When I go to turn off my computer or restart it, it tries to end task for the iexplore.exe. It will say the program is not responding and the computer won't turn off or restart like I asked it to. Also, when I open up my task manager and look in processes I see that iexplorer.exe is still running when I don't have any IE windows open at all. And the strange thing is I can't end task it and there's multiples of them. As well, if I don't have iexplore.exe in the process it has a problem with ending sysfader.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 8:17:01 AM, on 10/2/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
Couple new things. I've been using win98 for the past 7 years, but now have 2 new items a mouse with a scroll wheel and win xp pro. I've dug thru just about everything I could find to see if I could get this mouse to respond when I move it. But so far nothing. It sits there I'm guessing just to make sure the mouse actually moved for justthe annoyance factor length of time. then it jerks and catches up. Other than this nothing wrong with the mouse. How do I get it to move when I move ?
So just built a new computer and when i try to enter bios, the (ps2) keyboard does not respond, but the computer turns on with any press of the keyboard. If i turn on the computer holding the delete key, the screen hangs there saying prepare to enter setup.
I know I am behind the times, but I just now upgraded from SP1 to SP2 due to some of the anti-virus and firewall software upgrades only being compatible with SP2. SP1 ran great. After upgrading, tweaking the services, and a few other things my computer is still lagging. It takes 4 times longer to boot up w/SP2 and even after that is slow to respond for at least 5 minutes. I have always tweaked my pcs to boot faster and not have unnecessary things running. I've done everything I did in the past and still SP2 is slow. This basically sucks. It would be so great if MS didn't have a monopoly on OS's.I have a couple of older pcs that I run a couple versions of Linux on and they run fast and flawless
I have a friend who's keyboard does not respond while in windows, it can be used while in bios, but when the computer is booted up in windows at the desktop it does not work. I was thinking of just resetting the bios. Do you think that would work or is it something deeper? The computer is a Dell Desktop running XP Pro SP2.
I'm battling spyware removal at the moment (aurora) and somehow my win xp sp2 search function no longer works. i get an error "A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found" you may need to run setup I went to the microsoft website and downloaded the hotfix, however it doesn't work with sp2! anybody know how to fix this? I checked and i do have the srchasst folder in windows.
I have WinXP Home - SP2. When i do a search in "Search Companion" and a list is shown in 'search results' is there then a way to save that list to a text file that can subsequently be printed out?
