OS crashed and am trying to reinstall Windows XP Pro. Problem is I've reached the blue Windows screens and getting error message that 'can't locate asms file'. Now I can't finish the install, and I can't boot from cd to try to reformat drive and reinstall. when I restart Windows XP splash screen comes up, the blue install windows comes up and the error message comes up.
It been a long time since I did this, I need to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows xp, due to a program got corrupted, How do I reformat the drive?
It has 2 drives and the boot drive is split into 2 partitions. I was 'upgrading' his XP (was on C: volume) to XP-MCE and there was a failure, I decided to just do a clean install onto that partition. I deleted the old boot partition and started installing XP-MCE into the now unallocated space. After the reboot to continue installation it stops after post with "Disk error" and "Press any key to restart" messages.
If I boot to the install disk again it shows the storage space as C: and the new installation as D: (opposite of pre-reinstall). I retried with the 2nd SATA drive disconnected and it's the same every time.I can't reformat the whole drive; the storage partition has all the backup data that I saved from the original XP installation.
I want to reload XP PRO, clean the haed drive and give him a fresh start, yet it tells me that I have an earlier version and will not let me install it. It says to reboot and start using my XP Pro and it still does not work. I have checked the BIOS and everything is right in it, i.e boot from CD. I for the life of me cannot format this drive so I can reload a fresh copy of XP PRO and all the updates, and then some other programs. I am pulling my hair out over this. What am I missing that I cannot format and start over,
I recently reformated xp computer with xp 2002 disk all went well until i got to the activation of windows I activated windows and clicked ok then as i got to the logg on screen the error popped up again i repeated what i did the first time and sure enough it worked but when i clicked finish it returned to the logg in i tried once again to logg on and it came the same error but this time it told me windows is already activated and the only way to access windows is via safe mode which dont allow u to activate windows.
I was installing MS updates and my system went down and began looping in startup. I have tried F8, safe mode s/u, safe mode w/networking etc, No luck.It keeps looping.
I don't really know where i should start so.well earlier today i installed a second hd in my computer to pull so files off of it for my sister and my mom, but when i got it working it said accsess was denied to there stuff i went on my moms computer to check if i hade already backed up there stuff of the old comp, so i go into her document to see if i could find the old documents and when i start scrolling through them the window freezes...so i leave it for a minute and while i'm waiting i close some other programs one of which was mozilla which was also frozen.I go back to the my document window and its still frozen.
I try to close it and of course its not responding so i click end now and it made the every thing disappear like the task bar and all the icons on the desktop are missing...so i wait and see if any thing will reappear and nothing does so i restart it and it starts booting up..the windows logo comes up and the little bars only gets half way across then it restarts and brings me to that menu where you can choose save mode or start normally and all that and no matter what i pick the comp just restarts and bring me back to the menu.
Installed SP3 today. The install seemed to go fine.Restarted the computer, now I am stuck in a boot loop computer starts, goes to the We apologies page.None of the load options work, computer simply shuts down and goes back to the same page. Since this computer was a Vista-ready computer, but I ordered it with Win XP Pro,I don't have the OEM Win XP Pro CD.Therefore, can't do a chkdsk.
I'm working on an IBM ThinkCenter Desktop PC.On bootup, it goes through the IBM logo and then the Windows logo flashes quickly and then is gone and then the Safe Mode screen appears. No matter which option I choose from the Safe Mode screen, the result is the same: The Windows logo flashes quickly and then the system reboots, and then the IBM logo and then the Safe Mode Screen.I have tried running the repair module from an o/s disk I have here, but when I get to the c: prompt and type "dir" it says "error occurred during directory enumeration".There is only one partition.I have a copy of UBCD4WIN, if that would be helpful in diagnosing the problem.I do not have the o/s disk that belongs to this computer.
A firends machine (XPSP2) is stuck in a loop of starting, going to a screen that says Windows did not start correctly, then offering the options of safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, last known good, etc. No matter which option I choose, the machine shuts down and restarts and goes through the same loop. What should I check? I am able to get into BIOS.
Windows XP Home but before it boots to the start up screen it freezes and crashes everytime. I went through many troubleshooting steps and am stuck in a rut. here's what I've done. Tried booting in safe mode, that failed as well. Seems like the OS is really messed up. Tried using a restore cd that includes Windows XP Home. But the boot order for the cd rom is last and so it keeps trying to boot windows first instead of starting up the restore disc. To fix that I went to the Bios. Tried changing the boot order but that was not available to me because they weren't an administrator.
There was an adminstrator password set protecting the boot order but they don't know what the password is because they bought it from ebay a long time ago and lost that person's contact information. So there is no way of finding out the admin password from the previous owner. So now we're in a jam, can't get to Dos, can't get to windows, can't boot from the cd rom to do anything.
I think my PC is infected with a virus. It is stuck in a continuous startup loop.I get an error message stating:SAS Window: winlogon.exe - Application Error I'm given an option to enter to terminate the program or cancel to debug. Either option restarts the system again. It won't work in safe mode or any thing else.
My desktop is stuck on an infinite startup loop, I can see the standards Windows starting screen then there is a quick BSOD flash and the computer restarts and does the same thing - lucky I have a spare old laptop which will allow me to jump onto this site. Safe mode options do not work I tried the Windows recovery console - typing 'R' booting from the CD but then I get stuck at the console black screen not knowing what DOS commands I should be pushing. I tried goign the other way and choosing to install XP but then I get a message saying C: isn;t configured and will need to format to continue.
I am having a challenge reformatting the HD for a clean re-install of Win. XP Home SP2. I placed the Win. XP SP2 cd in the drive and booted up the system. Screen 1 came up (Windows Setup) & I pressed enter. Screen 2 came up and all the various items loaded ok. Before screen 3 came up the system had total shutdown with all loss of power-it crashed. Upon reboot a black screen came up with this information. Select operating system to start.
(1) Win. XP Home Edition or (2) MS Win. XP setup. Selecting option
(2) MS Win. XP setup brings up a black screen with this message on it."Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>system 32 hal.dll.Please re-install a copy of the above file. Can you please advise on how to do this so I can reformat and re-install
I would like to reformat my HDD as the main bug bear is that it takes about 5 minutes to boot up.I have a legal instal of XP Pro on it at the moment, but whilst getting all the disks together, i cannot find the XP disk anywhere.Any ideas on how i can reinstall Xp pro without the original disk?
I chose not to load SmartDrive (mostly because I was too lazy to look for the disk I have it on). Now the installation process seems stuck (40 min or so) at the "Please wait while files are copied onto the HDD yada yada" phase. Should I just reboot and try again? Do I need to format again? Will load SmartDrive this time.
I have just formated and reinstalled XP Pro, updated and loaded my programs.(Have installed only the drivers for the Creative Audigy 2).The system randomly freezes or justs shuts down. Mostly when I am working with images but by no means exclusively so.Sometimes instead of freezing/rebooting the graphics processor stops responding and will restart itself, often after only a few minutes. Again I don't know why this is happening or how to solve the problem.I had the same problem last month and followed advice given by crjdriver (in another thread on these forums) but the problems have reappeared.I've downloaded and run CCleaner and run the issues function which seems to have helped but hasn't fixed the problem.
Picked up a computer from my parents the other night that has stopped working. When it is turned on it goes throught the normal process of recognising the BIOS, running some checks on processor, memory clock, primary master etc., but once these checks are done it jumps to the screen that says: We apologize for the inconveneince. Windows did not start successfully etc., and then asks me to select from Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with command prompt Last known configuration Start Windows normally
I am really hoping that one or a few of you can help me with my issue. Back in June, I reinstalled Windows XP Professional on my computer. Previously, the PC kept freezing, saying Windows Explorer error, etc. Unable to do any work at all on my computer without it freezing, I reinstalled Windows. Problems solved. Except now, since then, I have had no sound at all coming from my speakers! I am missing the audio drivers, I think. Finally, yesterday, I downloaded Realtec AC 97... and now I can hear things opened on Quicktime from the internet, but cannot hear any sounds from websites or other programs I have on my computer. The little speaker control, that is usually displayed permanently in the right hand corner of the Windows toolbar, doesn't show up. I still have Volume Control on my computer...but of course cannot hear anything.Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do? I've tried unplugging the speakers and then plugging them back in to no avail. I don't think I have the installation CD for the speakers anymore, as I got them a few years ago. But if I did have them, is that how the drivers would be reinstalled?
I tried to reformat from the XP CD and from a boot disc floppy. Each time the process gets stuck at: Windows Setup. There is nothing else on the blue screen. It won't go past there to the agreement section...or anything else This system was a custom built computer, given to my mother-in-law about 3 years ago. The company has since gone out of business. It was built w/ XP Professional SP1 and has since been upgraded w/ SP2.Outlook express stopped working properly and would shut itself down as soon as it was opened. Then the dial-up connection would connect but no internet explorer pages would load.
I have been unable to reformat my c: drive. When using the format instruction under the file tab in my computer and clicking on the c: drive, an error message says that windows cannot format this drive. As directed, all programs have been shut down.
I wish to re-format the C drive on my computer - wipe it clean and start anew. Reinstall Windows and some of the programs that came with the computer. What is the procedure?
A friend game me a Gateway Solo Model 2500 notebook computer. It came with Windows '98 and no software. I want to reformat the hard drive and install a copy of Windows XP that I have. How do I reformat the HD? When I tried I got a message saying that I couldn't format that drive (C) because Windows was using it.
I want to reformat my hard drive and i have a win xp update CD rather than the full version. i have my win98 full version CD though. i can't figure out how to do it using a ntfs hard drive and using win xp.
I'd like to reformat my hard drive (which I've never done before). One question I have, is do I have to first uninstall windows? I currently have xp pro installed, but I got xp home with the computer when I bought it (don't ask me why, I have no clue.
I have a persistent problem with Windows and every time I open a Windows application the Windows Installer launches and I have to wait 3-5 minutes before I can carry on. I have run Adaware, Reg Edit, Bug Doctor and dowloaded the Windows fix for WI - none of which have resolved the problem, although theyt have marginally improved system speed. I checked the hard drive and there doesn't appear to be any problem sectors, so I have given up and am about to reformat the drive and start again, I am running XP Home and have 2 x 80GB drives. I only want to reformat the C: drive (the f: drive contains only data - no programmes) but when I go into f-disk, it appears to only see the f:drive and not the c:drive. Can anyone tell me a way of formatting only the c: drive?
